| I set up my Sam460cr with an SSD drive and all is well.
Thought I'd add a second HD which I did via SATA and I'm able to format the drive and it shows up fine, however when I reboot the icons are missing from my Workbench.
If I start Mounter I can show the partitions but again with a restart they are gone.
Assistance needed.

Two possibilities: 1) The drive is not examined by AmigaOS because it is masked out. Edit the "sii3114ide_conf" and "sii3114ide_xfer" variables to include the new drive.
So, if you have a CD on Unit 0, first HD on Unit 1 and now the new HD on Unit 2, you should change the "sii3114ide_conf" variable from "2100" to "2110".
You can do it from the Shell - use "nvgetvar" to examine and "nvsetvar" to change it.
2) The previous drive is marked as "Last LUN". Use Media Toolbox to examine it. If, on starting MTB, you get a message like "Unit x is no longer last unit, would you like MTB to change it?", click "Yes".

| I started Media Toolbox and it suggested I edit the RDB for the new hard drive which I did and re-edited the partitions but when I try closing Media Toolbox a requester comes up that asks if I want to quit and forget changes.
Once the RDB had been updated and the new partitions created I thought that there would be ghosted icons on the screen which I could format.
So how do I get out of Media Toolbox with the changes intact?

Sounds like you didn't tick automount on the new partitions? Go back in Media Toolbox and check. |

The changes you have made don't take effect until you have saved them in MTB and rebooted. So you have to:
1) Start MTB. 2) Make the changes in MTB. 3) Save the changes in MTB: click the box saying "Save to Disk". 4) Now you can exit from MTB, the changes have been saved. 5) Reboot (warm, Ctrl/A/A). 6) When the system comes up, your icons will appear and you can format them.

And the follow-up question is then: Why doesn't MTB mount new partitions on exit? It's VERY old-fasion to require a reboot.
MTB already knows if old partitions has been overwritten and could skip mounting in this case (to prevent overlapping file systems), since unmounting would probably not be failsafe in AmigaDOS.
Alternatively the user can use System/Mounter to mount the partitions manually without the old-fasion reboot. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

I've brought this up before. Yes it can be annoying. The reason would be that MTB, based on HDToolbox, would need extra code to actually mount the new partitions and how it would do this is still not solved I take it. |

1) Started MTB 2) Made changes in MTB 3) Saved changes in MTB by clicking box "Save to Disk" and it asks if I want to save the current changes I select "Yes" 4) Can't exit from MTB as a requester says "Do yo really want to quit?"
Options being "Yes, forget about it" or "No"
So I select "No" and do a reboot Ctrl/A/A nd still no new hard drive partitions on mmy desktop waiting to be formatted _________________ 1 AmigaOne G4XE (OS4 Pre-Release Update4) Minimig Sam440ep + OS4.1FE Sam460cr + OS4.1FE |

Tried using Mounter and it shows the icons on the desktop ready to be formatted, once formatted I reboot and the icons are gone.

Strange exit option from MTB. Can't remember seeing "Yes, forget about it".
I believe the Last LUN is the problem. Did you save changes for BOTH drives? Both your old (which needs to save the automatically updated Last LUN change) and the new partitioned drive?
Or of course it could be the UBoot envvar settings tonyw was talking about. Last edited by Deniil715 on 24-Jun-2015 at 07:53 AM.

Yes, when you are back on the opening page of MTB, it shows your drives and their Unit numbers in a list. On the right hand side of that list is says "Modified" or "Ready".
You must select (by clicking on) the Unit(s) that say(s) "Modified" and then click on "Save To Drive" to save your changes. If you try to exit without saving your changes, you will get the friendly "Are you sure?" message. If you then select "Yes, forget about it", that's exactly what MTB will do.

AmigaOS has had this last drive thing for years and I've always seen it cause trouble. I do wonder why it is still needed. Surely it doesn' take long to scan for all the drives on a bus? After all, MTB notices straight away, why are we bothered with it? I also wonder if this is a hold over from the old days of SCSI where drives could spin up slowly and it made sense to mark the last HD.Last edited by Hypex on 26-Jun-2015 at 04:34 PM. Thanks to all, sorted it.
I didn't have both drives saying "Ready" in MTB
Once both said ready closing MTB asked if I wanted to reboot, YEAH
Rebooted and my new HD shows and is ready to format.
Once again thanks all

Yes, it's to avoid having to wait for slow spinup of drives that aren't there to begin with.
I find it hard to belive that Amiga users would accept that all boots would be slower because some people have a hard time reading what MTB actually says. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean. |

Exactly! It's slow enough as it is with UBoot/CFE persistently scanning and waiting precisely according to spec each and every port on the machine before deciding it might want to start booting. WB would be pretty slow to start if it had to wait for the scanning of all ports waiting according to specs before decding there really are no more drives.
I just so wish I could configure CFE/UBoot exactly what drive setup I have so it could start booting immediately these are ready, instead of having me staring at a logo for a good 15 seconds before showing the list of boot options _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

It's not what MTB thinks, it's that if something changes, then that can prevent the system booting at all. So you don't even get to MTB. That is the problem. Booting into a disk screen doesn't help the user when the HD is right there. |

I agree with CFE, although it doesn't know how to auto boot, and must be told what to boot off so it shouldn't be an issue. But my UBoot scans the drives in fiver seconds so fine for me. |
