@AmigaBlitter

Anything Hyperion related is progressing at Glacial speed and according to Steven Solie money/bounties won't speed up progress as mentioned at Amiwest also Hyperions roadmap is undergoing change/review due to bankruptcy and the introduction of a new member to Hyperion board of members which has stalled progress on developments.

@Fairdinkem

Really sad that there are no projects based on the xmos.

Nore the sam fpga or the xmos has been used for something interesting.

Just remember that at the x1000 reveal time the xmos chip was showed running eight separate thread on the x1000, but nothing more.

Not true. There is a partially done project to use Xena/Xorro as a high-speed serial logger for debug output. I'm the one who suggested that project since I need to output debug to the serial port for graphics development (no chance to recover the log, otherwise), but I hate how slow 115kbps is. My suggestion was to put an SD card slot on a Xorro board and record the debug output to timestamped files on an SD card. Those files could be accessed later. If I weren't so busy on other things then I'd have a shot at creating such a serial logger myself.

We don't know how many people have bought proto boards, so it's possible that someone's working on something privately.

The documentation and tools is still rather limited (e.g., no native compiler), which is a bit of a barrier to anyone who might be interested in playing with it.

Hans

@Hans

Thank you for the info.

I hope that someone else is working in something interesting.

I apologies for that. My dream is that Amiga will finally come back in a sort of original concept, with CUSTOM chipset. I know, this is really hard today, but inventiveness is part of the Amiga followers.
When Xena and Sam was introduced, both have been publicized with custom FPGA or sort of (in the case of Xena). Xena have a dedicated bus too, Sam have jtag connector for expansion....

Interesting, all the major chip companies are moving to SoC, with dedicated custom core to speed up various thing (See qualcomm qualcomm chip for example).

Latest Atari system used to have DSP. I know that GPU today can permorm very well in most of the audio/video field....

But it's not custom, at least for me.

@AmigaBlitter: SoCs, or even normal CPUs, haven't devices like the XCore, because they integrate more useful stuff (for the market that they target).

Such cores integrate audio DSPs, Image Signal Processors (ISP), generic DSPs (like Qualcomm's Hexagon), video codecs (like Intel's Quick Sync), and of course a GPU with video standards (MPEG 1/2/4, H264/265, VP8/9; MP3, AAC, etc.) en/decoders. Not even talking about integrated PCI-Express controllers and modems too.

The XCore is only good for handling I/O, which is something not that common for the average user. That's why it can be used for logging purposes, like Hans suggested, or for... controlling the Christmas tree...

BTW, XCore isn't custom. The integrated audio DSPs, ISP, etc. are the modern equivalents of the Amiga's custom chips, because they are custom made. Each company design its own, which don't share with other companies. Many times they are so custom that aren't accessible/usable except internally, from the company's driver. And, of course, they really help the CPU offloading it from dedicated, heavy tasks.

There is a SDK for the XMOS chip, you can program it, but no one has found a usage for it.

I wonder why...

1) No sufficient power in XMOS Chip?

2) No need for it in helping things like streaming as CPU has enough power to handling it?

3) No any good hobbyist coders remaining?

4) No motherboards supporting it except than X1000, so no sufficient userbase?

I've heard of the new icon system: could we have a first glimpse of if?

I've designed my own icon system in Flash. I wonder if someday could be used in AOS.

People have said the chip is too small to handle, for example, a OCS/AGA emulator. Somebody should build a xorro card with two bigger chips.

Most likely no. The community is too small and these machines doesn't much appeal outside of the community. And what Hans said above of limited development tools and documentation.

Size of transistors being halved every 18 months still, there's more and more empty room to fill up with something on the chips. So finally even PC people have gotten the idea of Jay Miner 30 years later.

Or put negative comments to every news hoping failure of Hyperion because of personal hatred against Mr. Hermans and then start hoping some of the negative comments becomes true in future.

Olaf has no personal hatred against Mr. Hermans, he only thinks OS4 is dead-end and everyone should use AROS68k instead!

XMOS is a micro controller, not a FPGA, In case of XMOS, your taking about a controller chip that is supposed to software emulate a transistor-based chip.

to do aga, you should shift rotate a bits of a shift register, this give you one bit, then you combine that bit with other bits so you get color index number, then you send that index number into a lookup table to find the color. The color can be changed as image is drawn, thanks to the cooper.

I imagine, it not impossible to use a XMOS to mimic the cooper, and create small PCB with few shift registers, or a PCB with FPGA, and so if you going to use FPGA, you might as well drop the XMOS.

Two chips will not solver the problem: the XCore is an I/O device, and it's not able to emulate the Amiga chipset (not even the OCS).

@pavlor

There is always some news, but instead of looking at forums, you can look at OS4Depot.net, what new software has been released, for example.

This one gets me excited: libopenssl.lha

Mots of encryption stuff that everyone has complained about for some now is supported.

We only need some to recompile OWB now

Doesn't this count as news: "AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition available as digital download".

@NutsAboutAmiga
You haven't seen the demos from Xmos users ? Like emulating the SID chip of C64. I was reading PDF's from Xmos today and, for ex., LS-2 chip has DSP, arithmetic and encryption instructions. If you can't use arithmetic instructions to do bit shifting then what would you need to do it.

@pavlor
I didn't mean Olaf particularly, even I answered to him, but everybody who's negative against AmigaOS or Hyperion always and not againts anything else. Anyway, I got your point.
