Does FE support USB Card Readers? Backing Up?

I used to use a CF Card reader with previous release. Now, when I insert the USB connector, I get nothing but a busy icon on the mouse pointer.

I would like to use this card to backup my system. Is anyone else doing this? If not, how are you backing up your system and how do you recover it?

Thank you!

jb

I would not use a USB thing on AOS4 as backup. I once had an external USB harddrive and it got corrupted one day !

these days, I use a sata dock together with a pci sata card and sata hardrive as backup : fast, no error, perfect.

I have a 3.5" drivebay card reader permanently connected to the mobo, works with no problems.

Just to use amidvd to create a bootable dvd with a copy of your sys: partition on it which is very easy to do.

My USB card reader is working fine with FE as it did before, but there have always been minor issues reported with USB and OS4. Try disabling USB2.0 support, though that will limit you to USB1.1 speeds which might be painful for a backup.

I use my card reader constantly for short-term backups and transfers, never had a problem. But I also use a second internal hard drive for backing up my main drive, and I regularly back up to my NAS as well. Both are faster for backing up than USB, even with USB2.0 speeds.

I use a Sony multi card reader with no problems. I also use USB sticks all the time. My computer is a SAM460ex with OS4.1 FE

I have a card reader in front of my case. It has USB one side and cards the other. The USB goes direct to a USB port, the cards go to another USB port. Lately I cannot get any cards to show up. I don't know why, it was rewired recently to hook up with a USB2 card. I get no sign of anything being inserted. And this is since Update 6 it was rewired.

Plugging another USB2 card reader into the other USB port works fine. Do you get any clue in the T:usb.log?

A1-XE, OS 4.1FE here, with USB 2

I have a front panel card reader which works with a Memory Stick and an SD card simultaneously along with a USB stick. But like Daedalus, I have a second hard drive, which I use to manually mirror my main hard drive. I mainly use the card reader and the various media for file transfers with our camera and the PeeCee's.

@Paul

Sounds like the second hdd is the way to go. Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.
