For those who are still sitting on the fence, time is getting short. You have until Sunday morning to make a pledge.

Yes! Please can someone find out how much it would cost to have a custom mechanical keyboard made with Cherry switches that exactly duplicates the original A1200 keyboard (so it will fit into this case)?

@BoingBear

Well, considering you'll need a large PCB (price checked, roughly €15 including shipping) and €50 worth of switches (bulk price) it's hard to imagine it anywhere short of €150 including taxes and some sort of minimal profit to make it worth spending time on. But maybe that's not too bad.

At least development is fairly easy. I have a sneaky idea that the controller could be a cheap many-IO variant FPGA (found one for €4 that'll do the job) so it could emulate more or less ANYTHING you want, from A500/A2000/A1200 through to USB, PS/2, PC-AT etc keyboards (as in, both serial and parallell protocols available, with both KBDAT and /RESET lines able to flag the reset from three finger salutes). With diodes this would be full n-key rollower (even when emulating Amiga keyboards). Shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks for hardware plus a couple of weeks for A1200 keyboard emulation, plus a few weeks per additional protocol beyond that. It IS an interesting idea.

@olegil

Why a large PCB? If we are talking A600/A1200 keyboard replacements, it is all just plastic and membranes, and people have already managed making brand new replacement membranes and selling them for 20-30 euros.

go back and read the post before mine. then edit your post to read: never mind, need to pay attention.

I'm disappointed in kolla now. Didn't think he was the 'fire and forget' type.

Anyhoo, would there be any interest in a mechanical Amiga-layout keyboard in the EUR 150-200 price range? You know, economy of scale etc.

There should be but we will find out in the coming months when the next Kickstarter launches for those keyboards. Personally I would go with the rubber-dome style because they are cheaper and more spill resistant, but to each his own.

@TheDaddy

I already backed you. Don't push your luck. A question was asked if it's possible to do a new mechanical Amiga keyboard, I am trying to answer that to the best of my ability.

Man, seems ANY sort of discussion here will be hi-jacked by someone with an agenda

Exactly, each to his own.

To clarify: I'm not looking for numbers on how many would NOT buy such a thing, I'm looking only for numbers on how many WOULD buy such a thing. Amiga replacement keyboard (with at least A500, A1200, bigbox and PS/2 support) with Ctrl key above left shift (where it is frickin supposed to be ), Cherry MX switches. Price should be below 200 or it ain't interesting even to me.

I'm tempted to make a new thread with a poll where it's possible to choose between only "

LOL!

Shameless plug...unplugged!

I think it can be done for that money but it also depends on how accurate you want it to be...the more you put in the more you take out.

Back to my hole...

I've already spoken to Phil about the mech keyboards and keys...
I've done most of the work, localization included, we'll see.

Not sure if I understand what you mean by "accurate". I'm talking about making a new PCB using Cherry MX switches with diodes, and a small FPGA for emulating whatever keyboard you want it to emulate. I'm fairly certain it can be done for that money, as I've already checked all the electronics prices.

The larger keys obviously need some extra mechanical parts for stability, this is more YOUR domain

By all means come out of your hole
If you need any help on electronics, I'm your man (within reason )

Oh and btw. I wish I would have known back when I pledged that you would be asking a lot of difficult questions NOW, like "whatcha pledge for" and stuff. Did I take notes? Nooooo. However, I'll figure it out. I obviously remember the main item which is listed in all communication from kickstarter. D'oh.

Also, having a hard time figuring out what you mean by your colour names. Mine looks white+light grey. Are you calling this white+beige?

@olegil

Sorry about the confusion. I'm just trying to get a confirmation of all the pledges...I've got 81 people and some are updating what they pledged for even after the campaign has ended. I figured it's easier to send a mass email (Kickstarter offers that) than emailing each one of you. I just want everyone to be happy with what I'm going to order before I order it...not sure if it's clear.

Regarding the colours...yours should be white and beige, there is a dark grey and white combo here:

Ok, I'll take your word for it. This particular A500 reference on my desk is so dirty I really should pop off all the key caps and run them in the dish washer.
