CANDI (Prefs) Problem Posted on 25-Aug-2015 18:03:22

| I've got a problem with CANDI, especially a prefs option. The really very much expected function to use a personal backdrop with the animations placed in front.
It's in CandiPrefs/Custom backdrops and it simply won't work here.
Whatever backdrop i choose to use i only get a grey background (sometimes with the animations running in front of it, sometimes just the grey background)
Was someone able to make it work? What am i doing wrong? Are the supported backdrops maybe limited in size?
The docs doesn't state any limitations though
Help, please
(I wrote to the authors already, but they seem to be caught in busy working on their new games) |

Not tried candi, but it might shake the tree if you list:
Have you tried different image formats for the backdrop/animations?
What version(s)? (are candi and its prefs program separate versions?)
What graphics card are you using? Which driver version? Last edited by Boot_WB on 28-Aug-2015 at 06:43 PM.

Thanks for pushing me to test some more I got it to work with a very small picture (logo.png out of CANDI's drawer). It gets blown up to fit my screen (2560x1440) and fills up ~50% of my 2GB Ram.
So, it seems that with the other test cases it went beyond the magical 75% filled ram border and instead of showing an error requester it simply switched the too big picture with a grey background.
It's better than to silently crash, of course, but it would be even more conveniant to tell the user that either the picture is too big in size or Ram is running out...
It's probably my screenmode size, i guess the devs never tested with such a resolution
Just for the record, here's the answers to your questions:

Only .png and .jpg, not using any other formats.

Nope it's the same, actually the very first version with CandiPrefs CANDI 1.1 (30.06.2015) CandiPrefs 1.1 (30.06.2015)

It's a Radeon HD7750 with RadeonHD.chip 2.10 (03.05.2015)
Thanks for the hint, now trying to find the max size for a custom background...and maybe waiting for a dev to step in |

Maybe you set a smaller screen resolution (1920x1050 or smaller) and test if it still crashes/hang.
It freezes yourt machine or simple crashes and you can still use your system? If you can still use (or soft reboot) your system, use on a CLI/Shell:
c:DumpDebugBuffer ram:crash.log
maybe shows something you can send to developers.

Holy moley thats a lotta Ram :)
What size (no of frames)/format are the animations? I guess every frame will have to be loaded into Ram for compositing, so that might be something to look at more closely aswell.
Edit: I wonder if Candi is creating a full screen bitmap for each frame of the animation, and keeping them all in Ram for compositing? That could explain the ram usage even with a lowres backdrop...Last edited by Boot_WB on 29-Aug-2015 at 10:37 AM. Last edited by Boot_WB on 29-Aug-2015 at 10:05 AM.

It doesn't crash...it just falls back displaying that grey background instead of my wallpaper. |
