Hi,

I would like to create a jump and shoot with Backbone...

Here some mockups

I have all sprite Frames and tiles as PNG and PSD ...
I tried to create a sprite sheet and to convert it to iff via ppaint.... but Backbone is moaning that it is not valid iff...

Help is appreciated : D

Also I am looking for Music and Sound effects... I doubt i can just convert a wav to mod ...

@phoenixkonsole

I can help convert the graphics to use in Backbone, no sweat! I really like the look of them, and surprisingly this kind of game hasn't been attempted often enough in Backbone yet, despite it being best suited to this style of game!

One thing to keep in mind is the limitations of the program, and there are many! For starters, you can't have parallax backgrounds, so those mountains, clouds and trees in the background will either have to go, or be stuck in place, moving with the foreground. Also, any tiles which show part of the background through them will have to be drawn and added to the tileset that way, so you end up with duplicates of the same foreground tile with different parts of the background showing through them.

Also the weapons have only two options, horizontal or diagonal shot. There is no way to make an enemy shoot several bullets in multiple directions at the same time as some of the enemies in these mockups are doing, so they will have to simply shoot in 8-directions, one direction at a time. You can adjust the accuracy of their shooting to make it appear more random and spread out, but they will always be able to shoot in all 8 directions, which means bullets may come straight up out of their head even if the sprite only has guns drawn facing downward.

I have met a few mod musicians online who have offered to help out with my Backbone game projects, so I will ask if they would like to be involved in this project, too! And for sound effects, they can be converted from wav to 8svx iff pretty easily if you can find some good ones we haven't all heard in a hundred other games before that part won't be hard.

@phoenixkonsole

Sheesh bloke, do you sleep? :)
Where do you find the time for all your projects? :)

Seriously though, I really like the look of those graphics. Good use of minimal colors.

@fishy_fis
: ) a pity that we have only 24hours a day.
I am looking for additional team members to work in parallel on more projects.
It is planned to sell the final results for around 5-10€ (Download or cd)
Due to the small community it is likely that sales will end between 100 and 200 so nobody will become rich.
The idea is that I pay for graphics/music/sound effects.
Besides this I have graphics for a top down shooter like alien breed.
So for converting images and sound to a compatible type I would defenitely pay in advance.

@phoenixkonsole

You can convert wav sounds and songs to 8svx format. There are much free wav samples and with conversion the 8svx samples are littest than original wav sample.

@phoenixkonsole

Mock up looks nice Is it using 16 or 32 colour palette?. Hope you can get it working to your satisfaction in Backbone.

@Rob
16 colors. As Sammy pointed out backbone has some limitations but I am aiming for nes mega man like experience so i believe it could work nicely.
Right now I am playing (with samples) in winuae but I will transfer it to my a1200 to get a feeling if it can work there (afaik most games need a 030cpu).

I believe I have seen another game maker tool for classic which was in the work some time ago...

Hi, i can but there is a 99.999999~ % chance that i did something wrong : ) (failure in front of the computer)
Cammy seems to know it better than me. (problem solved : ) )

I have used the ppaint version which is part of AmigaForever 2014
Maybe my mistake was to create a spritesheet from single images with a pc-tool and than i tried to convert this under PPaint.

Well the only thing you get wrong might be to not chnage the format when saving and save out as a PNG with an ilbm extention.

That's good then.

I thinki that's the one I built, (not 100% sure) shouldn't have any issues with saving IFF, but you never know...

You'd get better control of colours if you assmbled your sprite sheet in PPaint, but that shouldn't affect the output format.

Yep it would have been better to work straight in ppaint. Thank you for your help. I assume the windows programm messed up the pallete and i again didn't have a look at it in ppaint... my fault. definetly.

grafx2 can output proper amiga iffs, it is about what you need to create planar graphics like icons and much more handy than anything genuinely amiga, even more so ppaint.

Okidoki this is also available for aros. Whatever Backbone is Running on amigaos, so the First decision is to use ppaint. At least wenn you run it natively.

@phoenixkonsole

why exactly do you need to develop the game on aros or amigaos? whatever the reason pretty sure grafx2 should be available for pretty any system, including all amiga offshots. there is even an amiga port by artur, even if im not sure if it has been released. except a cosmetic isue, it was pretty well working on my machines.

@Cammy

It's nice to see new projects and games for the amiga! I like it! and I discovered a new program that I didn't know: Backbone! What is it? I googled and I found a game engine for HTML5.. is it?

@wawa

Grafx2 is okay-ish, but doesn't come close to any of the bigger name Amiga pixel art programs.
Its slower, more cumbersome and only runs on rtg systems.
Even the loading of files is awkward and shows its Linux roots all too clearly.

Its okay if its a persons only choice, but thankfully its not.

I'd rather use ppaint any day. Or brilliance, or dpaint, or on PC PSP (the latter under Dosbox is my go to program under AROS even, such is the averageness of grafx2, even though I ported most recent version for x86 AROS).
