Reading a satellite time server

I can't remember how to get the system to check the time server in Prefs > Time > Remote for time when it boots up. It almost always tells me it's ten hours later than it really is.

I do remember putting something in User-Startup once, but that turned out to be the wrong thing to do -- it hung up the boot process.

@kilaueabart

Add

Date SERVER <ntp.someserver.com> SAVE

to your network-startup

Quote:

The SERVER option is used to retrieve the current date and time from a
remote server over a TCP/IP connection using the Network Time Protocol
(NTP). A list of NTP time servers and some good background information
can be found at http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html.

or install <shameless plug>yFacts</shameless plug>

It does the same thing as Andy's line but runs on a schedule in the background.

@kilaueabart

Or - to do exactly what you asked for, checking the server in your Time prefs - enter this line in your Network-Startup instead:

Date SERVER PREFS

The PREFS argument makes it use the settings on the server page of your Time preferences.

I usually follow up with the command SetClock SAVE on the next line.

Best regards,

Niels

Maybe your timezone setting is wrong? The hardware clock should run UTC and local time be determined by the timezone setting.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!

I'll go jankenpon later. I'm sort of afraid to even run the computer right now. The temperature docky keeps complaining about how hot it is, case over 40, core1 bouncing 56-57, etc. I should have added a fan to my X1000 before the damn hurricanes started mucking up the weather.

Your temperatures are just fine. On really hot days (95F +) I take both side covers off just to be safe, even then, core 1 can hit 60C, still well within its spec.

@kolla
In "System time" it always ends with "-1000 HST" which should be correct (UTC is 10 hours ahead of me). But sometimes it gives UTC and still says "-1000 HST" and "Standard time" below.

@kilaueabart,

nbache looks to have the correct user startup line. As for the heat I remember reading a post that someone had an X1000 ans the bottom fan was blocked by cardboard, "whoever built it forgot or overlooked removing it". Removal fixed it.

Not User-Startup, but Network-Startup!

It's important to distinguish, as you want to make sure you have started the network before attempting to fetch the time. So the line(s) should be inserted into S:Network-Startup, somewhere after the line with AddNetInterface.

Best regards,

Niels

@kilaueabart

If you also run Linux this may be it.

Amiga: hardware clock = local time
Linux: hardware clock = GMT

If you sync your clock in Linux and after that boot into AmigaOS (without sync) the time will be different.

I understood you to mean I should make Network-Startup look like this

_____________________________________________________________________
; $VER: Network-Startup 53.2 (01.06.2011)

AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)

; Add below this line applications that need a running network

Date SERVER PREFS
SetClock SAVE
_____________________________________________________________________________

But have I misunderstood? It's still early tomorrow morning, Limpid Clock says. Running those commands in AmigaShell also has no effect.

No matter. I just switched to Broadblues' solution, which works both in the shell and in NetInterfaces. It's now this afternoon!

Yes, that's correct.

It does require that you have at least once gone to the Time Prefs, second tab, and configured a time server to connect to, and saved that setting.

Niels

One of the three things I'm not able to make work. Three times now I have downloaded yfacts to RAM:, unarc'ed it, and drag-and-dropped it to WBStartup. And after a reboot gets me the wrong time, I look in WBStartup and it tells me yfacts is supposed to be in RAM:.

I found C:wbstartupCTRL, and it says

[Enabled] 0 RAM Disk:YoctoFacts/yfacts

which is pretty much nonsense, since rebooting tends to wipe out RAM: content.

The two Network-Startup suggestions don't work either. It's 15:19 here, but mu Workbench clock says "01:08:47."

@kilaueabart

If your system still has a problem with keeping time, its most likely the CR2032 cell battery thats gone/going bad. They don't last forever. My time started to be 1 hr off on first boot, I know of another that had a booting problem, both fixed with new batteries.

Did you drag it to the WBStartup-drawer or WBStartup-prefs program?
I think you have to first copy the executable to something like SYS:Tools, and from there drag it to the WBStartup prefs program.
This is one of those features, that I kind of don't like with os 4.1. Although it's nice with a prefs program for WBStartup, it really doesn't work as intuitive as the good old WBStartup-drawer.

Apparently I was trying to drag it to the program. So far as I can tell, I no longer have any WBStartup drawer! But yfacts.readme recommends copying to WBStartup, whatever that is. It comes with an AutoInstall which I can't make work. Clicking on the icon where I have unarc'ed it has no effect.

SYS/Tools is another thing missing here. I find Xena/xtools, for use on an X1000, and a zTools_Installer in Utilities. I remain baffled.

@kilaueabart

With the new Time Prefs from Enhancer Software Pack, you have the exact same option allowing you to select the server and how often it is checked.

Ignore AutoInstall, that's for AmiUpdate. I think I wrote this before the WBStartUp changes, so "copy it to WBStartUp" is no longer relevant. What you need to do is copy it somewhere else, such as SYS:Utilities/Commodities, and then add it in WBStartUp prefs from there.

You can create a WBStartUp drawer if you want, apparently that still works although I've never tried.

Clicking on the icon won't appear to do anything as it just runs in the background. You can check with Exchange as to whether it is running, and it'll soon start complaining if it isn't syncing.

The Tools and Utilities drawers were merged some time back.

@K-L
Your suggestion reminded me that I had seen something about Enhancer on my computer, and a search led me to Utilities:AmiStore/Downloads/ENSWPLOS4 where there is in fact an icon labeled EnhancerSoftware. So I clicked on it and sure enough it started installing a bunch of stuff.

But Preferences > Time still gets the same old window, not very much like the one in your picture.

I also find a .../ENSWPLOS4 _Downloaded_Files drawer, containing Version_1.1 and Version_1.2 drawers. The latter holds an enhancersoftware_plus.lha which I unarchived just in case it might have something newer, but I don't find much of interest except possibly Documentation/EnhancerSoftware, which does at least mention Time Preferences as the last thing to be installed. But I find no hint at how to install it. Surely that is not what I had installed earlier in the day.
