@tangoone

Splendid! This is well in the 68060 territory. Application benchmarks would show real performance, but SysInfo result is more than promising!

@pavlor

hope we get some amiga software that can use this speed!, only software I know of was lightwave.

@OlafS25

For FPU performance: raytracers (eg. mentioned Lightwave, Cinema 4D etc), Quake (GFX speed plays role here too)
For integer performance: Doom (GFX speed plays role here too), dnetc, archivers etc.

already a bit better than 106mhz clocked 060 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug4_yh3Q288

what concerns what additional speed is good for:
web browsers
sdl ports
emulation
aros
..

of course all these are of questionable meaning, since why on amiga, but then people want it apparently.

@wawa

Speed is always good. Even some "classic" games would benefit from faster CPU: eg. SimCity2000, Alien Breed 3D 2, Trapped 2 etc.

Better wait for actual application benchmark, but yes, Apollo result is great.

would be fantastic if amiga could have the same web browser you find on pc, mac, linux, etc.

@wawa

I can only speak for myself, but my 2+16 Blizzard 30/50 is a bit slowish, even with the support of Indivision Mk2. Lately Ive been setting it up for day to day use, and its working decently (ignoring webbrowsing ofcourse).

But being able to use a rather large screenmode with more than 16 colors at sufficient speed would be fantastic.
Not a must, but if Vampire retains good compability with classic software, then im all for it.

not possible for now... all apollo related hardware options have no more than 128 MB RAM. That is a lot but not enough for a modern web browser (if any would be available at all). Best 68k browser is Netsurf that should work on it.

@OlafS25

Yeah, I agree, navigate to anything beyond simple minimalistic sites and you are better off with PCs.

128megs on a classic machine still sounds great tho.

@wawa,

Looks good! Put SATA and good DMA, maybe a PCI graphics slot hanging off of it and I'm in.
Really want my A2000 to have an 060 class card in it again.

Snappy is the only way to describe it

I want to see it run some software, like OS3.9 and FPU version of Lightwave... something that demonstrates its speed _and_ compatibility.

This thread seems quite active regarding the accelerator;

@Overflow

I detect a circular argument. No point in putting more than 128MB of memory on it, cause very little software uses more than that. No point in making software that uses more than 128MB of memory, cause no hardware has more than that.

A modern FPGA has DDR3 support, 128MB (1Gb organised as 64Mx16, 128Mx8 or 256Mx4) is the SMALLEST DDR3 chip you will find. Give Micron another year and those will probably go out of production. But DDR3 chips are all pin compatible anyway, so this isn't a problem. You'll just end up with twice the RAM for the same price.

I don't know if majsta is still using SDR for the Vampire.v2, but if he is, I think this is not the best plan. DDR3 at higher clock is more difficult to do layout of (believe me, I know what I'm writing about here, DDR is typically the only thing I can ever get right on a new design, cause that's where I'm the most paranoid), but I think it's worth it in the long run.

An FPGA board able to run a full Apollo, with 680x0 interface logic, DDR2/3 and an SB8x0 sitting on a PCIe (this gives you a cheap PCIe switch and many SATA/USB ports) would be my favourite. Very doable, right on par with the sort of thing some of us do on a daily basis. Had a discussion with someone over at Safir (swedish board) the other day. Other guy insists that he would rather do a hardware CPU and use an FPGA eval board (severly limiting his expansion options).

My solution would probably cost less than 100 EUR in parts, plus soldering, testing, shipping and profit. Adding a 400-700 EUR 680x0 chip to that just feels wrong to me.

YET another option is of course to make a PGA adapter board so we could upgrade all those 030 and 040 boards with PGA chips out there to Apollo cores But this doesn't give any NEW features.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

@olegil,

Yes, Circular indeed! FPGA,s will only get faster from here folks. You may be able to run several large programs at once, IF enough memory!

@all

This is one of the most promising projects so far.

Majsta is doing an incredible work.

Thanks a lot!

@Birbo

Indeed.

Olegil makes some intresting points, but at the end of the day it seems like Majesta is gradually improving his design.
Even if its not perfect, boosting my accelerator from Blizzard 30/50 with 2+16 megs of ram to 128 megs and major speedincrease will go a long way to help the user expirience.

My A1200 has been left unused for many years, but after getting keyboard interface, usb , pcmcia CF reader and Indivision AGA Mk 2 ive actually used it every day Im home from work.
I could actually see myself using the A1200 as main machine using the updated Final Writer and TurboCalc.

The only thing that would annoy me would be the lack of 2 monitors at once while doing spreadsheets ;)
