Good question currently we have four Amiga operative systems AmigaOS3.x, AmigaOS4.x, MorphOS, AROS, running under emulation or native on true machines but which is the OS with more future?
I think that AmigaOS3.x thanks to fantastic WinUAE and MorphOS thanks to run on many true PPC machines.
Although AmigaOS 4.x has the advantage to have much games and apps to PPC and new software.
And AROS to has x86 hardware available to good price.

@Templario

Aros under FPGA or better "Aros under Emulation and FPGA" is missing

I don't know if MorphOS will run any day on other hardware no PPC, perhaps is the moment to speak about it.

@Templario

I'd like to see both AROS on 68k and ARM there as they have an interesting future. I also think that OS 3.x on native Commodore Amigas should be there.

It might not satisfy some people's idea of the future but, as a comparison, if AmigaOne machines stop being useful for everyday tasks, can we imagine a Kickstarter raising €150,000 for new cases 20+ years later?

If we're allowed to ask for other alternatives i would like to have os3.x on real hardware included :)
I enjoy my PPC machines and depending on what mood i'm in i use them more than the classics but the classics machines will always be there.

Me too. I have in fact just got myself an Amiga 4000/040 which I'm rather excited about. A couple of keys don't work and it needs a UK PSU, but it's rather lovely all the same!

@Templario

another thing you should not forget is that most sites have certain audience and that influences the results

f.e. amigaworld is more NG related (expecially amigaos) if you would do the same on a site like eab results would be very different

Yes I though in this case but this forum is more balanced than other sites more dedicated to only system.

It depends on what you mean by "future". If you mean for a retro centric crowd then 3.1 in emulation, FPGA or real hardware has a future as it caters to every conviction of how real it must be as well as peoples wallet size.

If "future" means being an Amiga like OS but modern by todays standard then maybe no one. I think all NG systems falls into the category of "semi retro", as it makes the best of somewhat obsolete technology (software and hardware in different combinations and extent).

Maybe one of the systems will break out and become such a system. In that case I think AROS or MorphOS has the best shot (the latter because it's being worked on, but in a slow pace), but it really doesn't effect the fun I'm having now. I rather have fun now than in 5 years time

FPGA like Apollo in A600-1200 will inject some life into the Classic arena.

I enjoy the classic system, but some more ram and speed wouldnt go amiss.
68060's are rare, and the new 030 cards doesnt offer enough vs the old ones compared to their price.
Ofcourse its nice to have the option of Individual Computers 030 cards if my current Blizzard dies, but my eyes are firmly set on the Apollo FPGA.

@Overflow

if life means more activity then I would bet on 68k too (with better FPGA based hardware and UAE becoming better and better)

if life means playing in the same league as the big boys then I do not believe that this realistic

Next Year aros for arm should surpass MOS and os4 userbase combined

Which is the OS with more future?

Cynical answer:
OS/hardware with youngest users.

@Templario

First I think Yasu has a point, it depends on what you mean. There is a fair share of people only interested in real Amiga H/W and the real 68k Workbench OS. They don't necessarily look upon the "NG" OSes as a natural upgrade path (rather a fork perhaps) and will instead look for a future in FPGA based projects, the new "A1200" H/W that Jens Schönfeldt is about to release, and maybe even H/W emulators on PCs running an evolved Workbench 3.X.

That said, I think all three "NG" OSes (AROS, MorphOS and OS4) has been striving towards making the Amiga as modern as possible in their own individual ways, all within the constraints/limitations that the Amiga compatibility brings upon them (single 32-bit CPU, 31-bit addressing space, open/unified memory architecture, etc). Of the three, I think MorphOS has come furthest and is the most complete OS with the most and the best features.

But to answer your question, "what is the Amiga system with the most future", I think the only proper answer will be MorphOS, since it has set out to actually break the Amiga constraints and hence sacrifice legacy binary compatibility by going 64-bit, real SMP, true Memory Protection etc, on a future-proof H/W architecture. What is "more future" than this?

@TRIPOS
MorphOS has a lot of limitations and I don't agree on that it has the best features.

What exactly? Supporting only 1.5GB RAM isn't the best i can see..
AROS 32bit can use 4GB.

Outdated 3d system... vs nouveau

Wifi based on AROS wifi... 1:1 here if you like.

What else? Hmm..

MOS has nothing which couldn't be done on AROS but misses a lot which couldn't be done on MOS...

AROS wins. ; )

... if you continue to talk about a imaginary MorphOS X86 I could show you a two years old ARIX iso which would give you wet dreams ; )

EDIT:
This is not meant as MOS bashing. I like it a lot and on a Powerbook it is really nice.. but realistically the future belongs to AROS

Yes MorphOS running on x86 or x64 will be good but it needs run legacy of 68k and PPC, also it will run on ARM.
