So, is this disk format dead?
I have been using PFS for years now, just wondering if there is any development on this format any more or if it's dead.
Anyone got any news?

quite on the contrary. pfs3 is open source, maintained by toni wilen (and perhaps piru sintonen, who ported it to morphos). it seems to be stable. the archives are secure on the aminet. it is free of charge. and if you have any feedback or bug report anyway, you know whom to talk to.

isnt it good news?

Nice for all MOS users.

I owned PFS, PFS2 and PFS3 back when I had my '060 4000. Great speed improvement, and I loved the "hidden" directory for deleted files. Saved me from a big hassle a time or two.

@wawa

It's still nice that they've got a native port.

It's native and in the MorphOS "ROM", making it possible to boot MorhOS from a PFS3 partition...

is there actually some morphos rom, in order to boot for example from pfs3 media on a mac?

tone way or the other, maybe i misunderstood the comment i was reffering to. my point is that its of course nice for morphos users, especially if they have native port, but it is eqully good for everyone else, as the code is free, preserved and maintained. if there is no os4 compile, then itr can be done any time. while i actually do not get so much the necessity to have it native as long as the ppc systems are providing seamless integration. i even wonder if there is any speed improvement, having it native.

I don't see need for PFS, we have SFS2, and JXF and so on, so I agree.

Way you need a native compile, I guess its question on supporting the latest new features, some of this features are large file support above 2gbytes, file notification (when files are changed).

Well, you can't replace on 680x0 instruction with one PowerPC instruction always, I believe 680x0 registers are mapped to powerpc registers. So there is not a big overhead, but there 680x0 registers are also kept in a table. So native speed it won't be, but close to native speed yes.

Anyway PFS is not supported on AmigaOS4.x last time I checked, but that might have changed.

isnt jxfs discontinued? and sfs2? is it stable? imho sfs degrades during usage, but i have given up on it long time ago, so i dont know the current state. however i notice an huge number of threads, people losing their data or partitions and asking for a recovery tool. sfs recovery tool was sfssave, but i dont know if it does sfs2, it wasn of much help in my case anyway, neither partition magic.

so in conclusion, if you ask me what pfs3 brings to the table beyond both of these is pfs doctor. ;)

@wawa

There is different versions of SFS, there are slightly incompatible.

"imho sfs degrades during usage"

Only if you forget to run NSD patch on AmigaOS3.x, on AmigaOS4.1 there is no problem as NSD is natively integrated into the devices.

If SFS is damaged; there are recovery tools available.

SFS2 is stable and works fine; I use it on all my partitions.
Corruption should never happen as SFS like PFS is juggling filesystem.
But in the case of disk corruption, you are f..ked..

you are also f..ked if disk dies, in that case it does not matter if was PFS or SFS2, if you should not depend on the filesystem, keep you data safe, in case you have something really important stored you should take backups. That is the only way to be really safe.

Indeed, OS4 can be booted from PFS too, although my patches never made upstream.

@NutsAboutAmiga

All SFS versions fragment very badly in long run and Defrag won't help enough.

There is also a bug in some SFS versions that they sometimes corrupt their internal data especially if you are writing to two files concurrently. It was fixed in MorphOS years ago.

@itix

I have not noticed any problems, and I have been using SFS2 for a long time, I'm not worried.
I have no use for "SFS1", don't have classic system, and I don't need to share any files with MorphOS.

@NutsAboutAmiga

In comparison, PFS3 is a lot faster, doesn't cause fragmentation when several applications writes to disk at the same time, and the performance doesn't deteriorate over time.

One other benefit of having it OS-native/integrated (besides being able to boot) can be to have a reset handler force commit cache writes before the system reboots or shuts down, don't know if this is implemented in MorphOS though...

A quick look at PFS' sourceforge project shows that the last commit was over a year ago. So not very active at the moment.

Macintosh machines require mandatory a Mac HF+ partition to boot from.

@Thread

It should being formed an Amiga Interstandars Committee whose rule should be to keep all fileformats of Amiga active, updated and that will allow these mayor features:

1) Keep available any Amiga Filesystem on any Amiga-like operating systems (AmigaOS 3.X, AmigaOS4.X, Aros, MorphOS) in order to provide being always possible any kind of data interchange.
(For example: If a guy has an AmigaOS formatted SFS or JFX media on his AmigaONE, he should be capable to mount it on a Pegasos system and run it, if AmigaONE dies or vice-versa with ICE Filesystem)

2) Hire bounties to keep Filesystems updated, recovery tools available on a regular basis, and insure they offer a professional data recovery quality, and make also available tools on Windows, Linux and MacOS that will capable to read Amiga filesystems, and Amiga formatted media, if you need to mount Amiga hard disks on these systems.
(Linux for example has support for Amiga FFS but not to more robust and modern Amiga formatted media)

3) Keep available public manuals and datasheets on about Amiga Filesystems in order to let always possible to build programs to read and restore Amiga data in the future.

4) Hire bounties that will reward Amiga Programmers letting them developing future filesystems and make them available OPEN and interstandard!

That's my two cents
