Personal Paint 6.4 Issue

Hello Amigans

I have recently installed Personal Paint 6.4 from an Amiga Format coverdisk, the program launches with no problems but things start to go strange when I bring up the file requester to load a file - the mouse pointer disappears so I have to rely on the keyboard.

Not such a big deal, but when I eventually load a file it displays then shortly after I receive a Software Failure... #8000000B Suspend or reboot or wait for disk activity to finish, task 080AZF18

Any ideas?

I have tried removing and re-installing to no avail.

My setup is A1200 + ACA 1221 w/ 65mb fast, 4gb CF card running OS 3.1.

Edit: More memory added

Kind regards,
Spud.

AmyFormat is old and the setup is newer. Only idea to try another version. In Amiga Action CD or xxx You know from the net.

Then DeluxePaint or Aeon..

When they put the printer to works I'll buy it. The printer and the program.

@spudisgood

8000000B happens if an FPU instruction is executed without an FPU.

I suppose that your 3.1 still has the original SetPatch. You should install this upgrade, it fixed issues of math#?.library if no FPU is present: http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/SetPatch_43.6b

BTW, PPaint 7.1 is available there: http://www.amigaforever.com/classic/download/

@thomas

Thanks Thomas will give it a go!

At the moment the Amiga is not online so I am restricted to around 700k for transferring files, so PPaint 7.1 is not an option at the moment

Kind regards,
Spud.

Seems to have worked Thomas, thanks!

Only problem now is running out of chip RAM

Is there a way to make Personal Paint open in its own window rather than Workbench, to save memory?

Kind regards,
Spud.

@spudisgood

I thought it did open in it's own window. Been a while since I use PPaint but isn't there an option in the menus to close WB?

Can you close WB from it's own menus while running PPaint? If this works you might want to open a new shell so you can get back to WB without resetting.

Using Fblit will reduce your chipram usage, I think there are other programs too, there was a recent discussion here or at amiga.org.

@spudisgood

PPaint ALWAYS opens it's own screen. Goto the memory management section of settings and make sure close workbench if needed it selected. while there setup some virtual ram, I suggest turn off ram storage and just use disk storage and tell it to use the fastest media you have.

Set the undo limits down to 2 or 3, 1 if you need to and memory to 0.1 mbytes

Clock proceed and F8 to save, then swich environments (j) and repeat the process.

Stick to PAL modes, low colours etc until you get fastram. you MIGHT be able to use 320x256x8 but probably with only one undo.

Spudisgood has no fastram, fblit won't work. Maybe he'll get some when he realises it will double the speed of his 1200

Untick the Settings/Workbench menu item, then it should close (or try to at least the workbench screen and save mem that way).

Not sure if 6.4 has the memeory menagement menu item, if so make sure the virtual memeory settings all point to hardisks and not T:

Huh, I read ACA1221 with 9MB RAM there.

You could unpack the archive on your PC and transfer the contents over in stages. The largest file in the archive is the Ppaint executable which is 668k.

If you're still using CrossDOS to read PC format disks then switch to Fat95 which allows longer than 7.1 file names and will avoid getting the files names getting truncated which is a pain.

Or instructions are executed from random memory. Most of time Amiga Gurus are "random".

You may also lose some protection bits which may affect...

I'd rather split the archive on the PC and then join the transferred chunks back to one archive on Amiga.

I thought I already gave you solutions to splitting up files across multiple disks?

Unarchiving on a machine other than Amiga does not work as the PC0: limits filenames to 8 characters and all sorts of wierd compression things happen when you start combining the two filesystems and nothing works.
