| Hi all
How much longer do we have to suffer flash. About time big companys like bbc ch5 ch4 and itv changed to html5. All OS could then watch TV on demand and not need flash player. Last edited by g01df1sh on 09-Apr-2016 at 02:30 PM.

| @g01df1sh Just Google "flash security vulnerabilities" and you will see lots of good reasons not to use 'flash'. Flash was recently exploited for some 'ransomware' hacks.

Flash is still mainly used in these cases because it allows DRM control and encrypted video formats that HTML5 does not yet support (or not widely enough).
Even youtube still reverts to flash for it's paid channels.

No, Flash doesn't suck, it sucks that we don't have it (big difference). AS3 is very nice, the environment is very powerful, the bytecode compact. There is a reason to why it's so widely used. Besides, like broadblues said above, it's irreplaceable.

Andrea Palamte ported Gnash to AmigaOS back in 2009, can't find the donwload now, but I guess can porting a newer Gnash is not big problem, the problem is to integrate it into OWB.
As was pointed out by others Flash is a security hole, this way NPAPI is disabled in most web browsers this days, and use HTML5 instead.

Flash sucked from day one and will still suck when the last website useing it shuts down.
Nothing to do with us not being able to use (a blessing if you ask me) but with the simple fact that I never seen it used in something I actually wanted and couldn't be done otherwise.
First it was annoying adds and stupid browsergames (noone want those 2) later it was utube making things far more complicated then they need be.
So all hail the mighty Jobs for forcing vendors to offer an alternativ route their content (even if we might not be able to use that route too). _________________ - We don't need good ideas, we haven't run out on bad ones yet - blame Canada |

Yeah I agree and now we have to put up with Microsofts piece of crap Silverlight also, if Netflix didn't use Silverlight I could watch Netflix on my Pegasos 2. _________________ Amiga A1200T - TF1260 - R9200 - Indivision AGA MK3 Amiga A500 - PiStorm EMU68 Pegasos 2 G4 - AmigaOS 4.1 FE / MorphOS 3.16 |

I've never experienced any Flash site that is beautiful and responsive to use, they're also so sluggish. _________________ Cross-developer on Windows, OS3, OS4, Linux; Current Projects:- Nephele Cloud App OS4 UserProfile System OS4 AmigaOneXE OS4.1.6

Flash-Sites were nice for the companies that developed them because customers got totally dependent of them, in most cases they only supplied the compiled flash but not the needed sources. I myself used it years ago for certain effects that were not possible without before HTML5. Now it is more and more replaced, I do not use it for new sites at all and slowly replace it on older sites. The main disadvantages are the security problems and expecially that it not works on mobile devices. |

I must of admit to having a fondness of Flash, yes its got it problems, but before HTML5 it was the only way to really do highly animated and interactive website, and the best way to display video.
People also over look Flash as just a web tool, because that is what it became famous for, but it was also a great tool to create games, interactive programs and animations in.

There is nothing good in flash. It opened up for designer to create slow, stupid and totally unnecessary things on the web. Anything based on flash doesn't work like expected, like no download function, no text search, no text selection, can't be bookmarked (inside a flash interior catalogue page f.ex.). Everything that's smooth and practical goes out the window whenever flash is in the house.
If any designer think they need flash, they need to think again. This applies also to html4. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |
