Would just like to say thanks to amigakit for a great service. I have received all my bits requested and all is working. Can't test much at the moment waiting for mouse adapter. Picture on my benq BL702a looks good so far using Amiga video to VGA adapter. Can't wait for mouse to test more. At last I'm back on the real Amiga system

@g01df1sh

Sounds real good. Is that the standard Amiga video to VGA adapter? No fancy flicker fixer needed?

@Hypex

Yep no flicker fixer. Will update more when I get a mouse working so I can test all standard modes

I wish i could say the same, i sent my A4000 motherboard to them for recapping. And after two years i got tired of waiting and wanted them to just send it back (got them to send it directly to Chucky). The motherboard was dead when he got it, not even the ROMs were working anymore iirc.

It had batteryleakage on the motherboard when i sent it to Amigakit but at least it was working then, only problem was audio.

@fryguy

I have not had such a bad experience from them. Most of the time, their sales and repair service are quick and satisfactory. There has been the odd occasion I might say "please can you send my item", but that is because when I commit to buying something I am quite impatient.

My worry with Amigakit is their financials. They don't look great from what I can see (they file abbreviated accounts but net worth and cash are not anything write home about).

Trevor can only prop up the entire Amiga industry to a certain extent and I don't know how Matthew and Trevor divide the revenues of A-Eon and Amigakit.

The problem I see with Amigakit, is there's no big ticket items - no Sams, no AmigaOnes, no high end accelerators, no NOS systems, nothing. They are a victim of a stagnant market it seems. They have everything in place (decent website, knowledgeable staff, good logistics) but no high priced items.

Its almost like the Amigkit in their early years- a lot of cheaper accessories. Well, you got to have a big market if you are selling items 100 pounds-ish or less to keep the plates spinning.

Come on, A-Cube, A-Eon, Individual Computers, Hyperion - support the Amiga community give Amigkit something exciting to sell!

Back in the day of Eyetech, and Gateway and early Amiga Inc, there was a sense of a potential reinvigorating of the platform. In the end most of the noise was either Vapor or potential partners didn't want to know but back then, it looked like it was close enough to the closing of C= to actually be possible to bring it back. Now we are all bottom feeding - next gen, classic, emulation its all the lowest audience and the output is all but crawled to a haut.

With all due respect to Matthew and Trevor, if it wasn't for the fact they turned a hobby into a career of sorts, then Amiga would be consigned to eBay and Gumtree, just like the BBC Micro, Altair 8800 and Apple II are.

Well, A-Eon/AmigaKit have upward of 100 X5000 mainboards sat in their office for months. At aprox £2000 each, they have £200,000 of stock that they must be desperate to shift.

@QuikSanz

It seems you can order a Prisma backplate, if not the card itself.

Hi

I can confirm the Benq Monitor does display all the pal screen modes but there is flicker on interlaced modes. In 640 pal its does not quite fill the whole screen either. I want more than 640 for workbench so will be going down the indivison route I think.

@g01df1sh

It sounds like your monitor is doing what an LCD TV would. Emulating the interlace. So much for Flicker-free Technology.

I also found that even though modes I used were an exact multiple, like overscaned 720 across or 1440 across, on a 1440 wide monitor it was distorted. But that was through SCART. I expected VGA to be better.

Are the DblPAL modes any better?

Part of the problem is that the Amiga's native output has additional areas outside the actual resolution, and so doesn't really resemble an "ideal" video signal. Overscan uses some of that extra space, but not all of it, and monitors have trouble detecting where the margins end and the actual data starts. I don't know how it's implemented, but the various black border patches available might suppress the extra parts of the signal, allowing a monitor to properly lock onto the start of the lines. Worth a try anyway.

@g01df1sh
DblPAL, DblNTSC, Productivity and Euro modes are all worth trying. Games won't be able to use them of course, but for most applications they should work very well. You can find them in the Storage/Monitors drawer. Drag them into Devs:Monitors and reboot and they'll be available to select. Don't forget to also add VGAOnly, which is a special file that helps compatibility with some monitors.
