Someday I complained about the position of the "Update software..." menuitem in the Workbench menu.

Normally it is not a task that you want to reach in a glimpse anytime and it obtruded to a position which was intact from ages.

While it has some happy months, nowadays it is just a practically defunct menuitem. If the new update will be released in a stand-alone "service pack" instead of AmiUpdate I hope it restores at least the old Workbench menu.

Do not say it is not a problem! I think one of the main real advatages of this OS is - or should be - that if something changes that means it has good reasons.

@Lazi

It's not a problem, it's for updating ALL software that supports AmiUpdate not just the OS, it should be used regularly to check for 3rd party updates which is far easier than checking OS4depot, Aminet and individual sites for those that don't upload to the first two.

Just because no one has released any updates is no reason to update workbench to remove a feature which would be used to install the update and remove itself.

Look on the bright side, no 3rd party updates must mean all those programs are perfect

@Lazi

I have updated some of my software on os4depot.net but I've been too lazy to put any of them to the AmiUpdate database. We 3rd party developers should use AmiUpdate more often as well.

Amiga platform have been away from mainstream a couple of decades, so the community including Hyperion is testing if some new idea works and then they might change their minds later. Also it might be depended on how big changes are in the OS components so a service pack might be better to make sure the users won't mix components from different updates.

Not necessarily.

Misunderstanding. I am a not against AmiUpdate which is a great and proper solution.

I am aginst the place where you can launch it in Workbench's Workbench menu first item.

I like it since usually where there's smoke there's fire, though in Amiga land many times small smoke takes a long long time to start a fire

"obtruded to a position which intact from ages" - And then people complain there are no updates to OS4. The irony

Updates means changes, also to 20 year old menus. Just because the Workbench menu hasn't changed for 20+ years doesn't mean it should stay that way for 20+ more years. The addition of the Update Software item is just one change, and it's not for the worse. Maybe it should have been put in the Prefs drawer, like in Windoze (Control panel)

I think it sits well in the Workbench menu. In fact, it is the most used menu item in the Workbench menu for me!, even if I don't use it that often.

What do you do in the Workbench menu so often that the Update software item is in the way?

@Deniil715

About changes to the 'Workbench' menu. I would love to see a 'Shell' choice
like AROS's Wanderer has. It's very handy to always have the possibility to
launch a Shell this way. The AROS devs have placed it below the 'Execute Command...' option
with W as keyboard shortcut.

Best regards,
Kotler

Or simply add a shortcut to Shell in AmiDock.

@all
Michael add feature request to bugzilla to have "new shell" shorcut next to "execute
command", so if devs will think its good enough idea, they will add it

@kas1e

not everyone can do that. so if folks interested in this enhancement are not beta testers, perhaps the best method would be availing oneself of the 'feature requests' sub-forum over on the hyperion support fora.

Backdrop and Execute command.

This is the current wb menu:
- Update software...
- Backdrop
- Execute command
- Open volume
- Redraw all
- Update all
- Last message
- About
- Quit

Update software simply just not fit there for me.
Or at least not in the first place.
Give me one reason for why it is there beside the one that osx has it there.

@kas1e
New shell to the wb menu would be great.

Like all things in life, someone thought it was a good idea at the time.
With such few developers, I have doubts any will want to waste their time moving menu options around, but never hurts to ask.

Ha, ha, ha! And everybody thought OS4.1 Final Edition was the ... you know ... final edition. Until 4.2.
