The second update pack for Icaros Desktop 2.1 has been released. For the first time in the x86 land, an AROS distribution supports Windows 7 (Vista/2008 and upwards) shared folders through SMB handler, but that's not the only big news in the "networking drives department": we also included Norbert Kett's handler for DropBox and a client for AmiCloud and the IndieGO! e-shop. Users of Amiga productivity applications will enjoy the refresh of AROS M68K system files, with a new, faster RTG driver. Last but not least, we also added Mapparium 0.4 to our distribution.

@paolone

this question will probably pop from a recent poll anyway, so let me have the honour. According to your experience, and clearly understanding you are not endorsing any specific producer/model, which laptop would you suggest in order to run Icaros natively ?

@Tellurium

It depends. What are your expectations?

My Acer AspireOne A150 is great to run AROS on, everything is supported from cabled to wireless network, 3D graphics, USB etc. But I may agree with anyone saying Atom processor delivers the bare minimum performance to play half/HD videos, emulate Amiga computers to play ADF games etc, so let's start arguing about the goals, and then we may try findind the right path to them.

I think you are right. Well, the scenario is: Development machine.

Given the Amiga-like architecture, maximum RAM would not be the priority. I assume AROS is still in Amiga's ballpark for resource usage. Any system able to load 2 GB would be far more capable than really needed

What may be needed instead is a fully supported GPU (as in, resolution switching. 3D is a nice to have), WiFi connectivity and a fast enough CPU/Disk to reduce compile/test cycles. Given I'd rather not risk hardware failures, I'd gladly avoid legacy/second hand systems but again, I understand the niche audience.

@Tellurium

Well, so any current PC with VMware Player installed onto it should give you enough raw power to build your sources. You'd lack 3D, but this might be accomplished finding a good old A150 like mine (no, I won't sell it to you) for testing. I'd say you may develop onto it, but 1) Atom processor speed is not for enthusiasts/power-users, and 2) I never tried connecting it to an external monitor: 1024x600 are not cosy to code on.

I see, in that case my retina macbook pro is probably going to host the vm for quite some time. Even in its current form, Icaros looks quite polished and a pleasure to use. Keep up with the excellent work. Should you decide to sell pre-configured machines (Native), excluding your beloved Netbook, drop me 2 lines, ok?

@Tellurium

I connect an A150 running Icaros to an external monitor.
Works no problem.

Cheers

@ilbarbax

Looks like I got lucky then.
Is there anyway to tell up front then, what will work with an external monitor without actually plugging one in?.

Cheers

There should be a BIOS option about the screen to use that you may try to set before booting the system, but I am sorry I can't be more precise since I do not own a G8.
