Choosing a graphics card for A1-500

I thought I would try to get some advice before buying a new graphics card. The SAM 460 ex / A1-500 only has two slots: 1 pci slot and right next to it 1 pci-e slot. The A1-500 comes with a hard drive interface card in the pci slot. There are two built-in SATA connections on the motherboard, so the interface card is not strictly necessary, although I've never been able to get the SSD HD that came with the computer to work with the internal SATA connector. I found a couple of radeon 7750 cards on Amazon. One is a VisionTek card. It's low profile with 1 GB GDDR5 RAM. The other one is a big flat one. It's a XFX AMD Radeon 7750 with 1GB GDDR5 RAM. The advantage of this one is it is thin enough to fit. All the other cards I saw that fit the specifications (I suppose they're newer) take up two slots and they wouldn't fit without removing the HD interface card. So the question is, would a 7750 work okay or should I get one of the other cards and remove the HD card?

Edit: Read the manual and found that I can't use the onboard SATA connector and a graphics card in the PCI-E slot together. That makes the decision a lot simpler.

@thinkchip

I have this one in my 460ex:

https://www.amazon.it/CLUB3D-Radeon-250-Low-Profile/dp/B0000C0SPQ?ie=UTF8&keywords=CGAX-R7252L&qid=1462649275&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Low profile (so you can use your pci sata card), full compatible with new Warp3D and Nova drivers

@thinkchip

Either of those cards would be fine for your application.
You're lucky you have an EX, you don't need to eat up your PCI card slot with a sound card.

This is not correct. The Sam460ex has 3 slots .PCIe x16, PCI,PCIe x1
This information is referring to the PCIe x1 slot and the onboard sata.
Not the PCIe x16 connector used for the video card .

For best results I would suggest a pciex16 riser card of 25-30 cm length so that you can mount the video card away from the other cards for proper airflow and the option to use dual slot cards .

@thread

I too have the same one as Kyle in my A1-500 set up which is running off a sam460cr board.

https://www.amazon.it/CLUB3D-Radeon-250-Low-Profile/dp/B0000C0SPQ?ie=UTF8&keywords=CGAX-R7252L&qid=1462649275&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

cost was about GBP 80.00 the UK branch of Amazon should have it in stock..

works great and fully compatible with warp3d and warp3d nova

Has it been communicated which GFX cards (and to what extent) OS4 will officially support, whenever (if ever) official native support will be developed in OS4? Just commenting on the fact that the drivers you speak about, as well as the "Nova" system, is merely a third party S/W developer's idea of a GFX solution unoficially sold separately, and not officially a part of the OS4, and that OS4 developer/Hyperion director Costel Mincea made comments online that did empathize this, painting the picture of Hyperion/OS4 vs. AeonKit as two separate developing teams going their respective ways independently?

@TRIPOS

The lite version of the RadeonHD driver is on the AmigaOS 4.1 FE CD's for Sam460 and X1000.

@Spectre660

Now I remember the talk about the small PCI-E slot way back when I bought the computer (years ago). It isn't really clear in the manual. You can see it on the motherboard. It's easy to miss. That's a relief. It didn't make a lot of sense. I can see there are options. Not being one to wait long I already ordered a 7750 from ebay. It's about a 10th the original price. I'll give it a try. At this point, speed doesn't matter a lot. Thanks everybody for your input.

@Kyle

I was looking for R7 250x as the recommendations suggest. They're all double wide cards. Maybe that's what the x is for.

@thinkchip

Keep an eye on airflow. The low profile cards with the fan can have some problems and can run very hot. I have my low profile card plus the PCIe riser card to avoid the over heating.

It will really suck for AmigaOS4.x users if Hyperion and A-Eon/AmigaKit ever become hostile toward each other, or a jealousy develops on the Hyperion side, and they decide to screw A-Eon/AmigaKit, by creating AmigaOS4.x upgrades that are no longer compatible with A-Eon's Warp3D/Nova drivers. Hopefully, Hyperion would never become so stupid and petty, but who knows what Ben is possible of doing in the future. Look at what he did to Bill McEwen and Amiga Inc., after supposedly being their "friend".

The RadeonHD.chip driver is a completely native driver that conforms to AmigaOS 4's Picasso96 driver specification. Being made by a third-party is pretty much irrelevant; Microsoft don't write drivers for AMD/nVidia/etc. graphics cards either. A-Eon just don't have the luxury of being able to build the cost of the drivers into the cost of the hardware.

@Hans

would I be right in thinking that Gallium would access the hardware on Radeon X and HD cards via the render manager in the RadeonHD 2D driver.
