This is my first rendering in Blender. Blender for Windows is up to version 2.77. It has a much improved interface that is more understandable. I wanted to use the version that runs on Amiga OS 4.1 FE, which is 2.48. This is a free model that I found on-line. There are thousands (millions?) of free models available. It is in 3DS format, a very common format that originated with 3D Studio. Newer versions of 3D Studio use 3DS max. This is a proprietary format and there are no importers or converters at present. Many 3DS files come with embedded UV maps. That makes things a lot easier. If you're lucky the original corresponding image file is also included. This one had both. There was also a bump map image. This rendering has a color map and bump map. I like the rendering. It has nice lighting with a satiny surface. Blender does bump maps very well. You can easily increase the bump magnitude until it looks like the object is encrusted with barnacles. Blender 2.48 can import many file formats. It can even import Lightwave 10 objects, which I have already tried.

Yes there are looots of free models that can be used in Blender

Certainly you can install a test version (for one month) of this PC program that will allow to load your model then save it as .obj for your Amiga/Blender

BTW: Once converted as .obj you can also use your models in Microbe3D

@thellier

"Exotic format"? Don't know what you're talking about. 3DS isn't proprietary. Every 3D modelling program can import 3DS files. Even Imagine. Some of them don't do it very well. There is no program that I know of that imports 3DS MAX files, not even Maya or Mudbox. Maybe Maya does, but it costs as much as 3DS Max.

I think I've downloaded a test version of 3DS MAX. I wonder how many times you can download a test version and "test" it.

I'll have to check out Microbe3D.

@thinkchip

Your image link isn't wqorking, ses to require a google account to view it, if I'm on chrome where I'm logged in to google then see a no entry sign, you might need to alter the permissions the image hosting or something.

@broadblues

Okay. I'm trying to find a service to store photos. I'll get it straightened out.

@thinkchip

Try re-reading Thellier's response.
His question of exotic format was to do with your picture not showing up, not model file formats.

@salass00

On Kubuntu 15.10 Core Due Duo PC and Firefox it shows just a "access denided" street sign in gray colors....

I think the OP meant the current 3DS max format, witch is proprietary. Also, if Autodesk never freed the old 3DS format, then it's, of course, still proprietary, regardless of which programs can import it.

Very nice! I like how you were able to make it a flat looking circle!
