why is the port taking so long. Surely now they have a base from the x1000 port it must be easier to port to other ppc hardware.? im no programmer please explain

Well, the X5000 port must be close to completion for Trevor and Matt to be considering pre-orders.
Tabor's processor is a bit different, so they will have to trap software that uses the standard floating point commands and emulate them with the SPI floating point commands (or a combination of those commands with other routines).

It is a bit more complicated than the port to the X5000 was.

It will get done

And for those of you that want a lower cost system...well you will have to be patient.

But since it was the first thing Trevor mentioned, you can be sure it is a priority.

The PA6T CPU in the X1000 is very different from the P50x0 in the X5000, so the PA6T specific code is of no help. Yes, they're all PowerPC processors, so they execute the same (excluding extensions like altivec) instruction set, but the hardware around the cores are all different. That includes stuff like the base initialization, memory controllers, PCIe controllers, and other built-in peripherals.

Did you ever boot a Windows CD on a desktop and laptop PC and not notice that it can install and work on either one? I didn't.

Then noticed that on the Mac any old OSX install CD doesn't work on everything and you need the customised one for that particular Mac? I did.

Well that's kind of your answer

For some reason, though PC hardware can be different from one clone to the next, requiring heaps of drivers, they manage to get it working from one generic CD.

But on PPC it's more complicated. Hardware and CPU differences are too far apart from each other and one generic build won't work on all. Makes you think.

For a modern CPU design why they'd make the CPU so damn complicated?

It's just kind of surprising to me that I am hearing _nothing_ about the progress of the Tabor. Is it possible that it isn't going to happen / was killed?

Is there data out there re: Linux running on test units that would indicate if it's overall faster than the Sam 460? (I know of the FPU issue.)

Amazing how little I am hearing.

Tests under Linux show single core integer performance comparable to 1-1.2 GHz G3 (= a little bit faster than 460EX in A1-500) and native single core FPU performance to 600 MHz G3 (= slower than 460EX).

G3? Uh-oh.
So about the speed of a G3 AmigaOne (possible faster in integer, and slower in floating point, but on average...).

Well, compared to a legacy Amiga PPC system that isn't bad.

Yes. Note quoted FPU performance is with e500 native binaries...

Price will be deciding factor for the fate of Tabor.
