| Hi all
I have now purchased the floppy disk version of workbench 3.1 from Amigakit. did basic install onto a 4gb Compact flash conected to a 4xide buffer. I am still unable to partition and format a disk over over 8gb. I have a 120gb drive and a 40gb drive the 120 will only let me partition up to 8gb partitions. The 40gb only see the drive as 8GB so can only have 2 4gb partitions max. This is driving me nuts floppy disks stated they have been modified for larger drive sizes whats is going on. I am also running amigakit 3.1 roms. _________________ A1200 ACA1232 128MB Indivison MkIICr Elbox empty Power Tower RPi3 Emulating C64 ZX Atari PS BBC Wii with Amiga emulation Vampire v4 SA |

You need TD64 or NSD from Aminet. |

Possibly a newer hdtoolbox too, consider that hdtoolbox on 3.1 is from april 1993 when the average harddrive was 20MB to 120MB (my 105mb cost £400), one gigabyte drives were thousands of pounds. At the time they probably thought an 8GB limit would make it future-proof. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

I'm using these floppies brought from Amigakit so I thought it should all be updated.
AmigaOS 3.1 6 floppy disk set containing:
Workbench 3.1 disk Extras 3.1 disk Fonts disk Locale 3.1 disk Storage 3.1 disk Install 3.1 disk
This Workbench disks have been made compatible to work with the following Amiga models equipped with a Kickstart 3.1 ROM: Amiga 500, 600, 1200, 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000, 4000T.
Changes and updates from Commodore version:
Updated C/Version (Y2K patch) Addition of Libs/workbench.library (for A-4000T 3.1 ROMs and 3.X ROMs) Updated S/Startup-Sequence (for 3.X ROMs) Updated Installer 44.10 and FastFileSystem 45.9 (to support larger disks) Installer itself is now part of the system installation (inside the Utilities directory)

You gotta ask yourself, have you got 8GB worth of data you can store on the Amiga in the 1st place?
I have a 40GB SSD but run it as an 8GB drive. I will worry about memory hacks / new filesystems etc. when I have come close to filling it up - i.e. I never will. _________________ Amiga A1200, 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 1230 MKIV 64MB & FPU, 4GB DoM SSD, Workbench 3.1 |

By the looks of it FFS is updated but HDToolbox has no mention which is what you need. Seems you need an emergency floppy and an OS3.9 disc. |

You need to have a look at some of the many guides out there for installing large hard drives. The basics points are though that there are three things you need for large drives to work:
- A device driver that supports large drives - A file system that supports large drives - HDToolbox that supports large drives.
The 3.1 floppy description only has one of those updated (the filesystem). HDToolbox can be used if you calculate the geometry values manually, though it would be far easier to use the 3.9 one. And you're also missing the device driver, since that is normally contained in the ROM, not on the floppies.
Anyway, I thought you were using OS 3.9, so you shouldn't really have needed 3.1 at all... 3.9 provides all three of these fixes. If you do want to stick with 3.1, you can get SFS or PFS to use instead of FFS, or use the updated FFS you got on those floppies. Then calculate the geometry of your drive manually, enter the values for your partitions manually and use it that way, and install an updated scsi.device patch. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

Ok I will try the os3.9 HD toolbox.
I only got the 3.1 install set of disks so I could start from scratch.
I still Have my os3.9 Install on another compact flash. Where do I find the correct driver on os3.9 cd Last edited by g01df1sh on 19-Jul-2016 at 03:24 PM.

The correct driver is used automatically by 3.9 and applied using Setpatch. It's part of the ROM update and includes many updates including scsi.device. If you want to partition using the OS 3.9 HDToolbox, use the OS 3.9 emergency boot disk you made during the first installation. That'll let you use the OS 3.9 HDToolbox from the CD and will also include the updated scsi.device and filesystem so you can fully partition it properly. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

don't think its hdtoolbox that is the problem it will partition the drive over 8gb its when I goto format it goes weird. right click select format and it just hangs no activity. _________________ A1200 ACA1232 128MB Indivison MkIICr Elbox empty Power Tower RPi3 Emulating C64 ZX Atari PS BBC Wii with Amiga emulation Vampire v4 SA |

Does Format recognize the size of the disk when formatting? Like do you get the question "Are you sure you want to fomat this partition of 40GB?", or does it say 8GB?
Have you tried PFS3 or SFS? They work A LOT better than FFS. I have never used FFS for any partition larger than 4GB. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

There is a 4 GB limit in AmigaOS and you cannot go beyond it easily.
You have to upgrade the HDD driver, the file system and all low-level software like Format and HDToolbox.
And you have to make sure that all these components remain active and become active again after a power cycle.
And of course you should never try to format a harddrive. Always use quick format. Full format is dangerous on a drive bigger than 4 GB. It might destroy all the work you've already done.
If I were you I would stick with something smaller than 4GB. CF cards are quite popular these days.
