WinUAE G-Rex (or any PCI busboard) setup INSTRUCTIONS for OS4.1?

Recently received my copy of OS4.1 FE for classic, so I can set up in WinUAE as a backup for when my A1 XE dies. Got OS 4.1 FE set up ok, but want to try and set up the G-Rex emulation in it so I can get better performance out of it (Paula audio is iffy and all the other options need G-Rex it seems).

Can't seem to figure it out, and there are no instructions on how to set it up anywhere that I can find. Anybody know where a reference is for setting up G-Rex in WinUAE?

@DWolfman

Why not use Mediator (with enabled DMA)?

G-Rex isn't supported by OS4.x so you need to use Mediator of Prometheus.

FE has limited support for G-Rex (only some cards work). Unlike real Mediator, WinUAE allows DMA, so even sound cards work OK.

@thread

Still, whichever one, are there any INSTRUCTIONS out there to follow for setting it up? It's more than just enabling the options in WinUAE, as they still don't show anything new in the emulated side....

Really could use some instructions here.........

After a little more investigation, it appears the PCI cards are showing in the emulation, since in the Cyber/Blizz PPC's config menu (hold ESC to open it when booting) has a PCI option which shows both cards. Once I get in to OS4, they do not show in ShowConfig.

So, looks like I have the "hardware" side good to go. Just need to figure out how to get it to work on OS4. Anyone?

@DWolfman

My configuration (in WinUAE Properties)

Settings--Hardware--Expansions:

Expansion Board Settings
PCI Bridgeboards
* Mediator (Elbox) 1 Enabled (checked)
4000MK2
Fill PCI DMA (checked)

Miscellaneous Expansions
ES1370 PCI sound card (checked)

Network
Realtek 8029 PCI (checked)
SLIRP User Mode NAT

I can send you my full config file, if you PM me your email (or I can PM you content of my config file).

Edit: What cards do you use? Eg. ES1370 PCI sound card needs driver from OS4depot. Network must be configured via Connection Wizzard (or in Network prefs).

@pavlor

What do I have to do on the os4 side to get that to work, anything? I can get drivers for the cards from my A1, which already has all of them on it. "Hardware" wise it seems there aren't any problems in the settings at least for the G-Rex emulation.

@thread

As I said earlier, there seems to not be ANY INSTRUCTIONS on how to do the whole setup ANYWHERE. Does anyone have or know where to find a step-by-step guide on setting this up?

From what I have gathered, even Toni Wilen says the G-Rex option would work better and not need a video card on the emulated PCI buss to work. I've seen others say the G-Rex works better as well. Yet, no where are there any INSTRUCTIONS.

Please note that I started the thread asking for steps to set this up. I'd prefer to stick to that, please.

At this point I don't care if it is G-Rex or Mediator or whatever. INSTRUCTIONS please?

Fixed the subject on the first post, so that I hopefully get better responses.

Not that I don't appreciate the responses so far, just need something that will tell me how to get this going.

@DWolfman

You have to use the GREX Bootdisk to initiate the installation process of OS 4.1 FE when you want to use the GREX in WinUAE. It's on the CD. For ES Sound Card and RTL Network, you must install and use the drivers from OS4depot.

@miggymac

Thanks, so now I need that bootdisk. Is there a copy of that CD it is on somewhere to download? I thought I had it from the unofficial site, but it's just a pack of drivers. Though I need to look at that closer.

@miggymac

Never mind, I just noticed what you meant (GREX boot floppy image on the AOS4.1FE Classic install disk).

So now I have to redo the install.....

Thanks

And now it is working. PCI devices are showing up now.

I forgot that there was a GRex install question during the install process. Been fiddling with this for three days and needed to start over anyways.

Yes, that's exactly what i mean.

I don't think it's necessary to reinstall. Just boot your already existing OS 4.1 FE in WinUAE, edit S:/Startup-sequence and add or change the following line at the very top

C:BootLoader COMMANDLINE="GREX"

Then disable your existing PCI busboard in WinUAE (f.e. Mediator), and activate the emulated GREX busboard. Save your configuration. Don't forget to restart the emulator. That must be all you have to do. If you want to switch to Mediator PCI busboard expansions, make sure to comment out that line in the Startup-Sequence.

@miggymac

Too late, I already reinstalled.

Just glad it is working finally. Now I just need to finish getting the drivers set up for the sound card.
