| Oh dear, oh dear.
Recently, I went away for a few days, and to save energy, I turned off several appliances including six which were plugged in to a multi-gang extension cord, one with a surge protector.
When I turned the multi-gang lead back on (it has its own switch) there was a massive CLACK and the devices didn't come on. I went to check my fuse box, and a trip-switch had been triggered, so I turned it back on. It seems the surge protector did its job... mostly, as one appliance now won't turn on. Guess which one?
Oh, woe is me! veterans of AW.net will know this isn't the first time my miggy has been short-circuited in this way! Why, oh WHY does it keep happening? was the A1200 not designed for today's power? _________________ SEX SUX

| @RoqueFort,
It all depends on what else is plugged into the power strip. Some things turn off and on by themselves and if the power gets shut down for a while, when turned on all that extra turn on surge can blow a breaker/fuse. The trick is to power every thing on separately to let them start. Always turn on the computer last. The blown breaker/fuse could cause a surge on your power supply, hopefully it has it's own fuse and that's all it is.
My condolences, Chris |

| @QuikSanz In retrospect, I feel quite a fool for turning on six devices at once!
I've already sent a ticket to Amigakit to tell them about this, if they think I can fix things myself by changing a fuse, we'll see.

Just did that, miggy still won't turn on.
I took the fuse from the power lead's plug, the one that goes into the wall (or extension lead) outlet and swapped it with an identical fuse from a plug that was working. The other device is still working while the Amiga is not, meaning something inside the miggy has blown while no fuses have!
Ugh.... WHY does this keep happening? Why is it so complicated?! _________________ SEX SUX

| @RoqueFort,
I don't know the A1200, maybe one more fuse somewhere. BTW most surge protectors are minimal and only work once, Replace it with a good one.

IIRC your Amiga is in a tower. ATX PSUs usually have glass fuse inside and that may well have blown. I guess you probably not so keen on opening up the PSU yourself but if you have another PSU you can test with the Amiga, this should confirm if it's the Amiga or just the PSU.

Did you also test your Amiga direct to the wall with a known working socket? |

Nope, I don't have another correct PSU and wouldn't dare to open the required areas of my A1200T to attach it, either I could damage the miggy even more, or it could give ME a fatal electric shock, which would be poetic justice!
Once again, it seems I need Amigakit's help. Hope they aren't as bogged-down in work as they have been sometimes.
There is one bittersweet thing about this, as some of you may remember this post... Broken zip _________________ SEX SUX

You'd have to actually open the PSU to have a chance of getting a shock and that's only if the capacitors still have charge in them. Disconnecting the cables and removing the unit poses no risk to you or the hardware when the power is off.
AmigaKit are likely to be busy with the X5000 very soon but a local PC repair shop (if there is one near you) will be able to test and replace the PSU for you, they don't need specialist Amiga knowledge to do that |

If hes got a A1200 small but heavy PSU, this will be filled with EPOXY resin, but if its the A500 / A600 you should see an internal fuse too

| Damn damn hoover dam, Amigakit ARE busy again, they say they have a large backlog of repair work, not even taking the X5000 into account!
Will certainly consider taking the miggy to a repair shop, if it's only the PSU that needs fixing or replacing, last time the EIDE interface also did. _________________ SEX SUX

I run my Amigas through a UPS. Definitely worth protecting this aging technology. You can buy them relatively cheap nowadays - just a small (say 400va) would give you enough run-time to deal with any power spikes/brownouts/surges etc. _________________ Amiga A1200, 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 1230 MKIV 64MB & FPU, 4GB DoM SSD, Workbench 3.1 |

There are a number of people in the UK who also repair Amigas in their spare time, myself included. Perhaps you could contact one of them and see if they could help?
I've been compiling a list of people on my website, and it looks like the closest to you is in Cambridge - perhaps that's close enough that you could hand deliver it, save risking damage in the post. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

Cambridge is still quite a way, note that I don't drive- I'm a biker. I would need someone to drive me, and they would need a lot of convincing to do so, since I don't know a single other Amiga fan from here to Norwich.
I won't dismiss this option, as I really don't know what to do! _________________ SEX SUX

| @RoqueFort Perhaps the guy from Cambridge could be persuaded to come to your place and look at it? If it is only a fuse he could definitely fix it at the spot, if not he could pick it up and send it back to you once fixed. Might be worth asking.
Don't know about shipping prices in the UK, but for Denmark it would be cheaper to pick up yourself than shipping an A1200 for such a short distance as Norfolk-Cambridge. And pick up would be much much safer too for the Miggy.
Another option is that you go to Cambrige by public transport, it is 3 hrs each way according to google maps. _________________

Just for the record, I've blown a few trip-switch fuses as well when trying to turn on a multi-gang extension cord. Never managed to brake anything connected to it though.
Hope you'll be able to figure out this PSU thing. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

Amigakit are still very busy with repair work and don't look set to get much of a break over Christmas! so, I've decided to try and get it fixed at my local computer shop, 121 computers. Anyone know if they will be understanding with an Amiga?
They'd only be able to help with the PSU, and even then, only if it is a "generic" computer PSU and not an Amiga-specific one. Are PC PSUs compatible with Amigas? _________________ SEX SUX
