Heh... hmm... I have two OSX 10.4 installation disc sets, but they both came with Mac minis I think, but I haven't got them with laptops either :)

And the laptops reqiure an exact disc. Not any PPC disc will do. The repair ISO you can download is even more sensitive. Which will just crash on a wrong model. Great job Apple.

Luckily I got unopened retail version of 10.5 from my friend for free, so I've been using that if I've needed to get OSX booted on some machine.

My friend (common expression) bought OSX just to have it. But it's useless on most of the books he buys because the drive can't load the disc. IIRC it's dual layer and most books including my main one are only single layer drives. I have a small 12" G4 and the only one that can read them. Which is funny as I didn't think an inferior Mac would be superior to a superior one.

I've successfully booted my copy of 10.5 on all machines I've tried... but I don't have older models of the series, and that probably explains it. I think I've tried it on Mac mini 1.42GHz, IBook 14"/1.42GHz, PowerBook 17"/1.67GHz, and PowerMac G5 2.0GHz.

But yeah, I once tried to look for a hardware test CD for certain model, and that didn't seem to be easy to find...

I've bought six Macs myself, and here sellers have always pre-installed a fresh copy to HD before sending to me, and told the defult pw they've used...

That must be more polite in your country. And know how to use a computer. As well as not being lazy.

Although I wouldn't have needed that, because I want to install operating systems myself afterall if I'm going to use them, a bit paranoid with that :)

There's still no news on MorphOS homepage.

Edit:
The homepage updated already.

@jPV

I have a PowerBook G4 15" that fails with some OSX discs. A PowerBook G4 17" seems fine. But I also have a PowerBook G4 13" that can read dual layers!

And I agree. Taking over someone's account or even adding one to the system just seems dirty. Fresh install and update good for me. Should also try transferring accounts next.

@Hypex

You cannot boot OSX discs from a different model. OSX is not free just because you have a hardware.

On those discs usually is printed something like "OSX for Mac mini" or "OSX for PowerMac". Those copied do not work on different hardware, even if they support the os version.

They only work on that type. This is kind of a copy protection to avoid someone buying new hardware is updating all his systems from the included discs.

However there are "universal" discs which were available in shops. THESE work on all Macs supporting that OSX version and the OS supports all compatible systems.

@geit

In this case it was the PowerBook edition. My friend bought OSX when you still could. But it was almost useless as on all the books he buys it doesn't boot. Imaged it to a FW HDD and that didn't work either. Bit hard to reinstall the OS when no one includes the install disc from the computer and a bought one doesn't work on it.

@Hypex

Actually it's quite simple:

Grey disk -> came with the Mac, will only work with that model

Violet disk -> bought as an update will work with any compatible Mac that was released BEFORE that version of OSX

Silver disk -> naughty you

My friend has bought at least five and soon to be ten I think of these G4 PowerBooks. Mostly 15". To my knowledge no one has included the grey disc when he bought it and they always seem to leave their old accounts and data on the drive. I'm sure he even got a box one time which makes it stranger.

@Hypex

Maybe it's a problem of which offer one takes.
I selected the used Macs I bought very carefully. Result: my two purchases (Mini, Powerbook) of used Macs came without any reason to complain: No scratches, fresh install, original discs and manuals, boxes and so on. But the offers I took were not the cheapest ever (albeit they were not expensive either). Read carefully what the seller writes or ask him before the purchase about possible issues.
