Prisma was finally released, although it was a long time coming at least we got there in the end. Will be purchasing soon I think.

If 2017 brings only one thing I would love an ACA2000, and I keep mentioning it in various forums but beginning to give up hope now! haha

@g01df1sh

Formation of AmigaDeveloper.com and release of the first versions of the Enhancer Software and updates was a real personal and team challenge but we are pleased that it went to plan. Warp3D Nova is part of the Enhancer Software and that has steadily grown over the year (good work Hans!).

In 2017, we are hoping to push on with further releases of the Enhancer Software, a new version of AMIStore and RadeonHD, Warp3D Nova updates.

The AmigaOne X5000 will benefit from modern software provided from the Enhancer Software. We hope that many other developers will help us build on this new platform in the coming year. Looking forward to it already!

Yes how could I forget the Prisma. Would like one of these but have just brought a new car so funds are on hold for a bit.

Is ditching the current and AmigaOS-hostile interface in favor of a dynamic, adaptive and Style Guide compliant BOOPSI/Gadtools/Reaction UI on the agenda?

That good to hear ! Are you got some developer who can do it native as possible ?:)
I mean pure C language + reaction (or mui) based interface and because of it it will be fast enough even on slow machines like 440ep (currently it slow on them).

And, if it will be done on C/reaction, main window will be resizable at last without needs to spend a lot of work to, as well, as scrolling will be normal and native, and not jumpy and alien as it now.

EDIT: yeah, i mean what just Petah says as well.

The Amiga Years Film (released) - just got my blu ray
Hollywood 6.1 Came out
Armiga came ou
Vampire and various other CPu accerator cards came out for classic Amigas
Workbench 3.1 got an update
IndieGo! console got launched
Loads of Games (Reshoot, Wings Remastered, Project Lila, Tanks Fury, Out of this World etc)
And I guess I'm missing a lot more

Not a bad year at all for the mini Amiga market, specially when you compare it to other retro computer markets we still I feel push beyond are weight in the market, granted I wish software development was faster because I think os4 & its apps developments seem to have slight slow ed this year, I do hope we see a little more next year, like os update (which I guess is not to far off now) and I hope some kind of solution to getting bowers development going again would be nice.

But still I wish everyone who worked on the platform (in any market) a merry Christmas and happy new year! thanks to all involved in keeping the party going!

This year is kind of low on achievements. Sure there were some, and I don't consider a point release update to software an achievement, but really 2016 was an overall let down for me mostly because of what could have and should have been achieved.

Here's hoping that 2017 will have the following:

AmigaOS 4.2 released w/ multi-core support
MorphOS n released with support for A1 X5000
MorphOS x86 dev/beta released
Vampire A1200 released
Vampire for another platform released
A killer app for NG Amiga released

@agami

Yeah I share your sentiments, I can not figure out why to date (2016) AmigaOS is yet to have a competent web browsing solution. It's perplexing to me that developer resources have been diverted to developing really non beneficial software updates and ports of operating systems to computers that become expensive paper weights that can't browse the internet in a meaningful or productive manner. I can't fathom why Hyperion or A-Eon or the MorphOS team don't see a mainstream Parity web browsing solution a priority.

Vampire has probably been the biggest stand out this year for me.

@Fairdinkem

Isn't Netsurf a fairly competent browser?

@WolfpackN64

Timberwolf, Netsurf and Oddysey with the exception of Timberwolf are admirable efforts, what I am referring to when I say competent is the web browsing experience on Amiga platforms no matter the flavour (MorphOS, AmigaOS and Aros) they are not compatible with all websites because the Amiga platform is deficient in one way or another i.e. can not service required plugins - Flash and Silverlight for example. The porting of Timberwolf presented some unrealised possibilities but alas we know how the story ended there don't we.

Well I am sorry everyone I don't wish to derail this thread any further.

I have as mentioned enjoyed following the progress of Vampire accelerators and look forward to the 1200 version becoming available.

Even more important (but tightly belonging together) than 6.1 release itself is the RapaGUI plugin. I still see huge potential in that.

Well, there's no real point in porting Flash and Silverlight anymore. The only thing Netsurf really needs now is HTML 5 support.

Don't wont flash its the most bloated resource hungry shit piece of software going. Apple did one thing right and dropped support for it years ago. What we need now is a good HTML5 browsers

I'm starting to think for os4 it might be better to have a similar solution that Aros platform has been pushing and hopefully Alice when it come out and have linux run in the background but works in a transparent way that you can open linux apps within OS and they just act native, and still have full access to the OS even if its just running in a virtual machine. Could this be done on a PPC linux?

@amigang

Considering how large the Linux kernel is becoming, I don't think that's really a good idea. Maybe something like Redox microkernel could work, but that would be much more complicated.

You might as well just run Linux.

@g01df1sh

Things that came in 2017 that I can recall off the top of my head.

Amiga.net.pl starting publishing books including the OS4 UAE emulation guide.

A Boxed edition of Solid Gold released by the Amiga.net.pl.

Porting of OS4.1 to Tabor/A1222 commenced with a photo of the Kickstart screen shown early in the year with a video of Workbench booting and in operation towards the end of the year.

ACA500plus just went on sale.

Jamie Krueger returned to Amiga development both on his own software and contract work for A-EON and also released a new version of the SDK browser.

Amiboing put preview videos of forthcoming projects on youtube. Their first 3D game and the Emotion video player with an alpha snapshot released on OS4 Depot.

Daniel Müßener made great progress on Wings remastered and Tower 57 as well as OGL ES2 for OS4.

Vampire 500 was released in small quantities for the "must haves" among us.

Reshoot released.

Andy Broad released MKshare for OS4 with a bonus 68k executable.

AmigaOS4 has memory limits that bind machines under the 4 GB barrier IIRC (moreover using a bank switching routine to access the last 2), while any 64-bit Linux kernel can address terabytes of RAM. This make the size of that Linux kernel absolutely meaningless and a quite silly argument to bring into discussion, today. Sorry.

I mean it's inneficiënt storage wise and no-one has an infinite amount of RAM in their system.
Running the Linux Kernel underneath ExecSG just isn't a good permanent solution.

@WolfpackN64

No one has "infinite amount of RAM" on their system? Sorry but... are you serious? All Amigoid systems, with the only exception of 64bit AROS, *are limited* to 2-4 GB of RAM. In a world where 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM cost around $100, even a gigantic 64 megabyte sized kernel would represent a near-to-zero percentage of the whole space available in RAM. 16 GB are not "infinite", are 8 times bigger than the addressable space of AmigaOS 4* and a very very little fraction of addressable space by mainstream 64bit operating systems.

I'm sorry but IMHO, the only futurible way I'd see for an *evolution* of the Amiga operating system is a hybridation with Linux, where Exec and all the Amiga legacy is turned into a wine style middleware.

(*) without bank switching introduced with some 4.1 update
