Goodbye to Sven Harvey's column in Micro Mart

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you all that the brilliant general computing and tech magazine Micro Mart has released its last issue 1445 on the 29th Dec 2016. This is particularly relevant to us as it was one of the last avenues to get Amiga news from the mainstream printed press. Although Amiga Mart has only been featured every other issue for the past few years, its not bad going that we had a twice monthly update on Amiga matters for the general public (i.e. not Amigans or die hard Amiga geeks) to read at the local newsagents or supermarket!

Sven has gone a great job of cataloguing the main Amiga news, wrote some amazing features and was able to share his love of Amiga music remixes (something that convinced me to help KickStart Allister Brimble's Amiga Works three years ago)! I have bought Micro Mart every other issue almost religiously for the past five years in the hope that the Amiga Mart section would be recognised as causing a sales spike over the Apple Mart section which replaced it in the alternate week (naive but well meaning ).

So please raise a glass and celebrate that in the UK at least the classic Amiga line, Deluxe Paint, The Settlers and even the X1000 were celebrated in the mainstream printed press as late as Christmas 2016 over 22 years since Commodore's demise. Sven we salute you and I hope to see more of you on the Youtube GeekologyGB Channel

@BigD

What sad news. "Amiga Mart" was a great sub section of the magazine.

Sven did us all proud bringing Amiga news to the wider masses for so many years. His notable contribution to mainstream computing magazines will be missed greatly.

Maybe he should have a column in Amiga Future :)

@BigD

I bought my AmigaOne XE off Sven, picked it up at the first (maybe only) Micro Mart show in Birmingham. The DVD-RW drive I also bought there, I finally replaced today (it hasn't been working properly for years, I relegated it to the PC when it started playing up ).
Saw Sven's column a few times, always pleased me that there was an Amiga column in a mainstream magazine, and not a retro one. He deserves some praise for keeping it going so long.

A pity, I used to read MM quite often, especially the Amiga section, though I wish it had been every week instead of every fortnight.

Somewhere I still have the article where MM readers voted for the bet ever home computer of all time. No prizes for guessing which won

End of an era

Sad to see this mag go, it was a great read, out lived a lot of other computer magazine so it can hold its head high, shame the internet has hit the tech mag hard there are a lot fewer on the scene now.

It's not quite the only publication carrying Amiga news and topics, retro gamer has the odd Amiga story, review of a classic game etc, so if you still looking for something on the selves of WH Smith to read have look ;)

That's not the same. Sven covered ALL Amiga flavours including Amiga OS 4.x machines, Vampire boards, Minimig, AROS and MorphOS. Retro Gamer will be limited to the 'Classic' machines and games.

That's not to say it isn't good it's just that the articles in that publication only reinforce the misconception with the general public that the Amiga died with Commodore and was just a games console with a keyboard and mouse Plus Retro Gamer has already gone bust once before being resurrected so its future is far from guaranteed!

Do I understood well it is the magazine or the coloumn closing and not the guy who is passaed away?

Phwew!

For a moment I believed it was another good Amigan deceased...

So what's the problem?

We are in the internet age. If still alive, anyone can contribute the cause and the Amiga platform by writing articles on the web...

Only death stops any further efforts...

So in the meanwhile let's rock people!

@Raffaele

Yes, it's the magazine that is closing and hence the Amiga column.

I've already explained what the problem is exposure to the mainstream computer users;

@BigD

Just got the final issue today. Well worth buying as it is a proper 'final' magazine with some interesting editorial.
