@Thread

I guess I'd be more inclined to give Nintendo the time of day if they hadn't attempted to sue both The Great Giana Sisters and Blitz Bombers out of existence. Should I be glad that they let Xtreme Racing be sold?

Hey wait a minute maybe I've been too hasty. If only they provided multi-colour ice cube simulating rumbling controllers, that might win me round

I look forward to buying Star Fox Zero for 5 on the PS5 in a couple of years when they no longer make their own hardware

Super Mario Land was fun for a while during a coach ride somewhere around 1992 and for that Nintendo I'll always be grateful

@BigD

Nintendo no more make their own hardware than Sony or Microsoft make theirs.

PS4 and xboxone are made by amd and switch is made by nvidia (its basically a tegra system).
Also Nintendo didn't make bomberman, so not sure how you got the idea they had the right to sue a clone.

In regards to the question its a mismatch so its hard to answer. One makes games machines, the other was a great computer that could plat a decent game.
The question is as askew now as it was 30 years ago, but I'd prefer a computer to a console any day as my computer hobby consists of more than playing games.

Ok it was Hudsonsoft on that occasion! My bad

From Amiga Games Database: Hall of Light:

Quote:
Leading Edge's plans for commercial release in 1996 were ruined when a non-Amiga company (Hudsonsoft) accused them of trying to pass the game off as one of their Bomberman clone products. Development was stopped to avoid legal problems. Leading Edge eventually released the near-complete game for free in 1998.

The fact the poll is mismatched is irrelevant. The Switch is not a serious contender in the console race and I look forward to playing some of their games (Splatoon & Star Fox Zero) on other consoles eventually. The misfiring Nintendo event made the PSVR and PS4 Pro look like the real future and the Switch will push casual gamers further towards smartphones and tablets. Where are the games for this machine?

Neither AMD nor Nvidia makes the consoles, they only provide the SoC's. No console manufacturer ever produced it's own SoC's.

It's a bit of an exception since Commodore did buy MOS Technology, but it's probably the only one next to Acorn.

By that point C= were reliant on HP to manufacture the AGA custom chips. No new chip designs were entrusted to MOS in the AGA era. It was clear that major investment in MOS would have been needed to keep it relevant in the 90s and that wasn't going to come from C= They didn't even invest in the fabs to upgrade Paula to enable 8 channel or 16-bit audio and 1.76MB floppy support! MOS was left to rust, cause environmental pollution and eventually collapse following an employee buyout!

I like Nintendo is trying something new again, I was actually even planning to preorder one of those switches to get one already at march, but alas! it comes with no games and those three games that come out at release, none might be relevant to myself.

I would love that zelda of course, but nowadays i dont really have time to play that long intensive games, hence i dont see much point to buy it, especially for the huge price they seem to be aiming for new games now.

1-2 switch is only one that has at least right type of game to make me perhaps get it, but the little i have seen about it, dont seem too interesting.

I would have liked some solid family game at launch to play with my daughter. Super Mario Odyssey for example.

Now it seems like situation is that i want to buy the machine at launch, but for what? Just to watch it? Cant even use it to watch blu-rays or anything.

Such a shame, finally would have chance to buy something at launch, and then they fail it.

I hope Switch becomes a success, although right now it dont seem so too much yet. I very much like Wii U, I think thats the best console ever made as it is the most fun of them all, and it is such a shame that one havent been very succesful either. There is so much unique fun potential left in Wii U still that no one have done yet. Switch seems like worthy next console to WII U in that it has that unique idea again in it, I am just afraid it will happen same as with WII U, that the full potential will never become realised.

Yeah, heaven forbid we miss out on the software that realises the hardware promise of G&T Cocktail Simulator with realistic ice cubes. A perfect family friendly game!

Fair enough Splatoon 2, Ultra Street Fighter 2 and Bomberman R will all be fun to play for 2.5 hours on a plane but then so is the Sony Vita and that can't compete with Smart Phones either!

Little Johnny's Mum & Dad probably won't allow him to bring the families 280 living room console on the plane journey in the first place. Especially if he loses a Joy-Con and they have to pay 42.99 for the privilege of getting a new one!

The Nintendo release date reveal was so bad that I thought that this thread didn't deserve a serious poll. Sorry, but watch for yourself along with the comments of a life long Nintendo fan;

Semantics.
People, yourself included, know what I meant.
If you want to play the semantics game I could counter with the fact that its only very recently that consoles even used SoCs.
Once upon a time console manufacturers had a much bigger involvement in their hardware designs. The Dreamcast was probably the 1st system to be made solely from variations of "off the shelf" hardware. Even the ps2, released later had some of its hardware design in-house.

So on your logic, who cares if Nintendo stop 'making' hardwae or not?! Maybe we should just join the PeeCee master race or buy an iPhone?! I really don't get what you're driving at. Console companies design, consult, contract out and use external fabrication plants the same as any consumer electronics company so what? Do you want Nintendo to 'produce' their own hardware or not?

They used to be more involved up to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Unfortunately, they have really gone off the shelve now. The Xbox One is basically a cheap PC with a gimped version of Windows on it.

@WolfpackN64

The Cell in the PS3 cost a lot to develop and in my (hardware loving) view it was worth it. However, the PS3 was too expensive at launch and was difficult to program for. Saying that The Last of Us eventually showed what that hardware was capable of! The console market is contracting and companies cannot afford to be bleeding edge at launch hence the whole 'glorified off the shelf PC' strategy. This does not lead to longevity however and hence mid-life upgrades are appearing. It doesn't affect me because I'd never buy a console without good games to play and I didn't convince my family to buy an Amiga until most of the 2D Team17 had been released and Commodore was already dead in the ground! Mid life upgrades seem to be a necessary evil to keep the developers happy with cheap dev costs and standardized x86 machines! I personally would have liked an upgraded Cell in the PS4 but the market has proved me wrong.

If you look at it as a home console then it doesn't compare well graphically with the PS4 Pro and the XBox One S.

As a portable console then you are comparing it with the convenience of just using your phone or existing tablet.

The main problems I see with it are high cost, lack of launch games, tiny winy controllers, low-def tablet display, short battery life and a clueless online experience.

Apart from that it's a winner
