So I've finally had a chance to get back to my Sam440-flex and get things set up to write a bit of code, but I'm still stuck tinkering with this Radeon R7 250. By all indications it should work, as it's on Hans' compatibility list, but there it requires driver version 2.7. On Amistore there is version 1.7 and 2.1. I've tried 2.1 and indeed the version command shows 2.1.

So where does this version 2.7 come from?

R7 250 should work with former versions.

@K-L

Yes, I was just reading through that, and re-reading Hans' list it's worded that the driver version listed is just the latest one it was tested with. So I'm guessing 2.7 is part of the Enhancer software/Warp 3D Nova stuff.

Thanks for the reply!

And now I remember what the problem was before. The card is recognized just fine, UBoot shows and when the AOS splash should appear, the screen goes black.

Is there anything else I'm missing beyond installing the driver and adding it to the Kicklayout?

@Bradsco

my Club3D Radeon R250E (rebadged 7750) does the same sometimes when it Is plugged in via the HDMI cable, if I switch to VGA the os4.1 boot screen then displays when I reboot....

for some unknown reason connection via HDMI is a little tempremental

I have version 2.10 of the Radeon driver installed btw

@Bradsco

R7 250 is an Oland Chipset which require the newer RadeonHD drivers (v1.20 or v2.21) exclusively available from the Enhancer Software Standard or Plus editions respectively.

The older v2.7 driver will not work with Oland cards so it is necessary to upgrade to Enhancer Software if you wish to use a new chipset.

@outrun1978

I have exactly the same card. I read through other posts (most likely including yours) before buying it, and it's the exact model listed on Hans' compatibility chart: Club 3D Radeon R7 250E CGAX-R7525L. None of the three ports show any difference... VGA, DVI or HDMI. I've even tried an HDMI to DVI converter. Nothing yet.

@amigakit

I'm hesitant to buy the Enhancer software because of this confusion. Hans' list shows that card as a Cape Verde chipset, and with outrun1978 having success with the 2.10 driver, that adds another layer of doubt.

I'm using a PCI to PCIe adapter (pic attached), so I'm also concerned that might be part of the problem. A note of interest is that the system won't even reach UBoot with both the Radeon 9250 and R7 installed at the same time, although I've seen both that bridge and a Radeon 6870 listed in Ranger (while using the old Radeon 9250 for display).

Last, I also wonder about the mainboard itself. This Sam440 is extremely picky about components. It won't boot at all using any number of working (and good quality) power supplies. It will only boot with the micro atx power supply that came in the original case.

I'd like to believe that using the Enhancer software would solve this driver issue, but with all the other questions, I really doubt it, and then I'll be put out for having spent that much more money on something that just won't work.

OK, I read your first post which stated you have a R7 250 - which is an Oland chipset and not the R7 250E which is Cape Verde.

@Bradsco & AmigaKit

Radeons above the HD6000 series do not work with the Sam440ep models and the adapter. Verified by my tests since 2014 .The latest U-boots do not fix this. Verified by Ribdevil .

@Spectre660

And I see the difference now for outrun1978 since that system is a Sam460cr with the same R7 250E. Just to clarify though, does it make a difference at all between the Sam440ep and flex models? Based on the results I'm guessing it's all the same, and there's no way this will work.

Anybody want a Sam440-flex system with an SSD?

Update:

I pulled a 6850 from another system and it works fine with the bridge. So yeah, it's just tough luck with anything that could possibly work with Warp3D Nova. However, this is the first time I've had a working Radeon HD in the system, and as with before I'm still curious to see what I might do to extend the Warp3D Nova driver to this family of GPU.

@amisteph

That can be very dependent on the card. A good rule of thumb for sure, but the R7 I have is a low profile card and has no external power connector, so whatever power it needs its designed to draw from the PCIe bus.

This 6850 however DOES have an external connector, and it's working fine. I think the real issue is exactly what Spectre660 pointed out... that there's an incompatible combination of Sam440, PCI->PCIe bridge, and any GPU later than the HD 6000 series.
