thought i'd dust off the ol' Sam440ep but the meagre 64mb of gfx mem is abit strained at 1920x1080. just thought i'd ask the experts what the best card would be for an upgrade?

the hdr lab page seem to suggest the radeon hd 7000 series, but it's a jungle out there with revisions and whatnot, i'd appreciate if you guys could share a link to a specific card that i could purchase.

thanks.

@jhogs

You can use only PCI expansion and I´m not sure if PCI versions of Radeon HD cards will work with SAM440ep. Top supported PCI cards are Radeon 9000/9200/9250 with 128 MB GFX RAM (or 256 MB if you are lucky to find working one). Note I never used this machine, so there may be other problems I didn´t mention.

@jhogs

Maybe using 16 bit depth? With good dithering, I can´t see the difference even on my 27" LCD.

I have Radeon 9250 128mb 128bit. Best is if you found Radeon 9XXX, wich has a 128bit memory access, most of them have 64bit memory Access.

Radeon HD 7XXX would give huge performance boost, but they doesn't seems to work with Sam 440ep Flex? I'm not sure how many have actually tested this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUg-6I9cizo

Video shows diffrence Sam 440ep Flex with Radeon 9250 and Radeon HD 6450

Radeon HD 6450 doesn't have working 3D, like Radeon HD 7XXX has.

@jhogs

With a PCI-PCIe adapter, they work up to the Radeon HD 6XXX series, but since there are no 3D drivers for them, the only option with 3D is the 9250 or 9200 (it's a bit faster)

@jhogs

I had a radeonHD 5450 PCI working on a sam440ep without problems , used together as a dual monitor setup with The onboard gfx.Which led me to thinking, one could use both with The same monitor switching outputs and overcome the lack of gfx memory by opening screens con each gfx card,with The only annoyance of having to switch monitor output.

@ribdevil

don't suppose you have more information on that pci-pcie adapter? if there's a way to have a meatier gfxcard i guess i could atleast try it out.

@Ami603

heh sounds better than the radeon9250, i assume you used it without any adapters and stuff?

@jhogs

Yes it was a straight PCI card, only adapter i used was a pci riser because my case couldn't host the gfx card vertically.But i also tested it without the riser before mounting inside the case.
Card benefits from bigger memory size but you can't have W3D for such card.
EDIT: i think you will need to purchase the RadeonHD drivers for it, otherwise it won't work.

@jhogs

If you like 3D, the only solution it's a 9250 or 9200.

With others, you gain in speed, but no 3D.

With radeon hd PCI, the same. at moment only 3D for the old 9250 or the Radeon HD 7XXX or upper, and this don't work in a SAM 440.

@ribdevil

i've ordered both a 9250 and a 5450.

lack of a 3d driver might not be a big deal really,i can always juggle the cards if the need arises.

@ribdevil

How many cards did you tested? I have impression that only few cards has been tested? aCUbe hasn't tested this themself?

@jhogs

aCube tried to fix issue with Radeon HD 7XXX cards, if you have time and some money please test it.
