In the past few months, I have done some, in my opinion, rather nice restorations of some Amiga systems. Bought a lot of bits and put them all together, become proficient at recapping, cleaning the machines up and turning them into nice, tested, upgraded machines.

Some examples of my machines I have done up and sold on to the community:

A600 system
030 A1200 system
Upgraded A1200 system
Another nice A1200 system
Monstered A1200 system bought back to life

Its a shame that doing these up for pleasure then to sell them on to make more space and release cash for the next one ultimately loses money. Because, as sad as it is - putting components together into a fully working, nice machine makes it less valuable than the sum of its parts! That's why some of the established Amiga traders on eBay often break the machines down and sell off the parts.

I currently am running a really nice condition A1200 with specs as per my signature. Good, modest compatible machine for maximum compatibility for the classic games, apps and demos.

But I have always had a weakness for the A600 ever since my old upgraded A600 project that toured the Big Bash events back in the mid 00's. See website archive here.

So I have just purchased another nice condition, unopened A600 machine. See here.

I have purchased a 1MB Chip RAM expansion, 3.1 ROM, capacitors, new mouse, new SCART lead, new dust cover, ATX PSU with adaptor, new 4GB IDE DOM, and the new v2 Furia Accelerator with FPU.

I don't normally keep 2 working systems (apart from my 2 A1000's which I keep for historical and personal reasons - one was given to me by a friend), as I like to have a configuration I am familiar with. So, I doubt I will more than likely sell the A600 when it's done. Or I might fall in love with the cute little powerhouse and sell the A1200. I prefer the A600's shape and soul but can I live without AGA and the numeric keypad? I know I could go Vampire to compensate for the AGA on the A600 but the Vampire to me is not classic enough - the A600 merely providing power and I/O to what is essentially a new motherboard.

So, if you are looking for a recapped A600 with upgrades or a recapped A1200 with upgrades, watch this space, I might have one for sale soon!

So I have decided I would miss AGA so much so I will sell the beautiful Amiga 600 I have made. Please see link below for pics of this rather machine and upgrades/accessories.

You serially build and then sell Amigas.

You're doing good work. Even if you are not making money, at least you have the satisfaction that you are extending the life of the machines and providing good machines for other Amiga users.

I will probably be doing a bit of restoration myself in the coming weeks and months (I'll be chronicling it in this thread). This weekend I'll be going to my father's house, where hopefully I will find the A1200 wedge case, the A500, and a couple of 1084S monitors.

@Kay

That's my thought process. OK I am not making any money out of it (actually losing which is bizarre) but its keeping machines fresh and relevant in the community. I am friends with all the main traders on eBay so I don't mean disrespect but when they buy my restorations only to break them down and sell off the components, that's not fun - but 50% of the ones I have done have gone to genuine users.

I can't afford to keep selling machines at a loss - shame I don't come out even but components are more valuable than complete systems unfortunately but it has been fun getting more confident doing the recaps and understanding the quirks of the machine - adds a new dimension to the hobby.

Yes its good fun. Scary though when in the hands of the carriers but I really well package to protect them.

Heads up. I have just taken in a clean, white A600 with clean white spares. Going to use best of the best bits to do another nice restoration. Adding 3.1 Rom, 4GB DOM, 1MB RAM upgrade, 2MB PCMCIA fast ram expansion and so on. About to do the recap. Let me know if you are interested as I am likely to put it on eBay once completed. I will post a link if that happens.

@A1200

Do you think you'll add a Vampire V2?

@Amiboy

I can do if I can source one or a furia but as I will likely sell, I will add one at interested party's request only.

@klx300r

Yes it is a strange thing. Not discounting the fact that Amiga was a complete system whereas PCs were modular and you could earn a living putting the latter together and making a profit. The Amiga scene is completely the opposite. A dealer friend keeps systems in one piece for a limited time to help the community who need systems but he breaks them down thereafter into component level and makes more money! I am just sad the price I have to pay for components or a half decent complete machine, by the time I have restored it and upgraded it, I can't even break even, I make a loss every time so am just doing it for something to do and to keep the classic hobby going. I think it's because there's little difference in selling a yellow, faulty Amiga vs one that looks brand new. Nowhere to get enough margin to cover the cost of the roms, hard drive, capacitors etc.

I wouldn't mind owning one of your refurbished Amigas. I'll PM you my email. Maybe I can save you the trouble of listing it on ebay.

@tommywright

Installed the new organic polymer capacitors this evening. Stable thus far. Clean sound. Running it overnight with some cpu/gfx stuff running to see if it's still running tomorrow when I go down for breakfast. If it is I will put the case etc. Together and partition/format the hdd.

Seems to be stable. Was still running when I checked this morning.

Restoration completed. Used the best case and keyboard from the selection I had and the most reliable disk drive which weirdly happened to be this Panasonic for the A1200 which I thought might have been one of those Escom PC converted ones but it works fine so used that. All case clips are intact.
