Hi,

I'm posting this under new member introductions, since I've been away for so long, I'm basically a new member. At least from a biological standpoint, a fair percentage of my cells will have been replaced since the last time I was here.

As a continuous entity, however, I have been around the Amiga community before, starting out in the 90s. As I suspect is the case for many of you, I started out with an Amiga 500. This machine was upgraded significantly, to 1 MB chip, 4 MB fast, and 50 MB hard drive. Back in those days, I would occasionally hang out on Amiga Network News and later Amiga.org. I would read everything I could get my hands on of Amiga related news and information, be it from the British printed mags (which where quite expensive in Norway), or online sources such as Amiga Flame.

After my A500 I moved on to the A1200. This one got upgraded to what I later considered silly levels. It started quite reasonably with a 1230 accelerator, memory, hard drive, and an external CDROM. Then I put it in a tower, got the Mediator PCI expansion, a Voodoo graphics card, the IDE interface replacement from Elbox, even the the hybrid 060/PPC 604e accelerator. It was a bit of a mess, but at this time, I was a die hard Amiga fan, sticking to the Amiga for everything. Apart for an old CDTV and a CD32 which I bought in auctions, the last Amiga machine I bought was an AmigaOne G4 XE. I wouldn't get a Wintel machine until I was well into my computer science studies, probably around 2002.

I don't know if anyone around here still remembers me, but if you do, this is the short version of the more noteworthy things I've been up to during the last 7 or so years: I was featured on Norwegian TV while dating the woman who would later become my wife, I have built a house, and I have made a baby.

So, how are things going in the Amiga community? Any significant developments or cool pieces of software I should check out? I have heard about the Vampire accelerators, which look amazing.

As I mentioned, I built a house, and now, 1 year later, my finances are starting to recover to the point where I can afford some extra furniture for my office. This means I will finally have the space to set up some of my vintage computers. I have not yet decided which ones. I'm guessing I'll be able to set up 2 or 3 of them. I'm looking forward to get back into retro computing. :)

@Kay

yes me too, i kind of remember the avatar. so thats what they are good for.. it never occured to me in full force.

yeah. welcome back. as said, if you ask me, check out the vampire/apollo project:
http://apollo-core.com
http://www.majsta.com

there are also developments on os4/ppc front:
http://www.a-eon.com/
certainly other users will point you to further details.

around morphos it has been a bit quiet as of late, except, even though it hasnt been released yet, it apparenly now also supports some hardware of the above company, namely the x5k.

last but not least aros is now an alternative to genuine system on genuine amiga hardware, in some aspects better, but still lacking in others. currently there is a lot of work put into transition to x64, the new abi v1 and introduction of multiprocessing:

Thanks everyone, for all the kind words. This was always a nice community, and I am glad to see it hasn't changed much, and that many of the old members are still around.

Thanks also for the updates on the happenings in the world of Amiga. The X5000 looks like something I would love to own, but it's not something I am likely to be able to afford/justify in the near future. Honestly, in terms of new hardware, I'm most excited about the Apollo/Vampire cards, which seem to be very capable, and way more affordable.

Thanks for the tip about Hollywood, that's something I will definitely give a try. I am a software developer by profession (mostly C++, but I speak other languages), and have been wanting to get back into hobby development. To work cross platform with the Amiga is something I have been wanting to do for a while.

I think I'll see if I can get my AmigaOne up and running again this evening.

@Kay

Welcome back.
I remember you.

The AmigaWorld site is just like in the old times, even if many aspects of the computing changed over the previous years.

Nowadays people are too lazy to read articles and forum posts it seems, that's why I am considering buying HDMI framegrabber and record videos of my Amigas running various software. The AmigaX1000 is a exccelent Amiga hardware and the AmigaOne X5000 looks even better.

@Kay

Hallaisen!

Since you express intrest in Vampire, check out these forums;

http://forum.apollo-accelerators.com/

http://www.apollo-core.com/knowledge.php

Also, since you are a developer, the Apollo team got their own IRC coders channel.

irc.freenode.org

port: 6667

Join channel: apollo-team

As a starter I highly recommend you join the IRC channel to get oriented. Usually between 75-90 people idling/active there.
I know BigGun has expressed intrest in any developer to code for the platform, for any type of software, since they are busy developing the core, which doesnt allow time for them to do much software development at the moment.

For now I think vasm is the one compiler that supports Vampire core instructions

http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=86025

But its a fast beast, so even if you stick to the older compilers that supports generic 68000 cpus, the 100++ mips sure helps. Hollywood should be good for cross-platform development for sure.

Thanks guys.

I did get out my old AmigaOne G4XE today. I can't believe I got this while I was still a student, this quite an old computer by now. There are so many things I had forgotten about it, like the fact that it actually has a floppy drive, and the "fan on a bracket" i mounted in the middle of the cabinet, which I set up to blow extra air through the CPU heatsink.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it work yet. It looks okay, apart from being a bit dirty. All the fans spin up, I have a green LED indicator on the motherboard, and after the hard drive has run for a while, I see the LED on the keyboard light up. Unfortunately, I don't get any display, on either the analog or digital output on my Radeon 9100. Oh well. It is nice seing it again anyway, and I'll be trying for a bit more. I'll do some cleaning and reseating, and see how it goes.

By the way, I have already replaced the 3V battery. I do remember some things.
