Consistency between CLI and GUI is one of the strongpoints on Amiga, the shortcuts that work in the CLI for most part also work in the GUI and vice versa.

And you want to ruin that.

Nope.
If you'd read my posting carefully, you'd know that I suggested to implement it as an option.

'Option' here means YOU have the coice if you want it the 'ruined way' or the 'consistent' way.

Hadn't it always been emphasised that the Amiga is very flexible with regard to 'customising'?

How often do I still have to repeat it:

F O R . . E V E R Y B O D Y ! ! !

You could set it up as you like and I can set it up the way I prefer!
What's wrong with that?

Nah - I will NOT start explaining again - read my posting(s) more carefully...

If I were someone of them, I would surely seek something better to do with my life, than trying to make you happy. Really.

Do you really think this is about 'making someone happy'?
I understand it rather as 'ideas to improve the system'...

There already are options - there are a two digit number of commodities that let you set whatever key-combination you may want.

I do not even want the choice - if a user wants to screw around the basic concepts of the operating system like that, he/she better want bad enough to take the effort to seek how to do it.

Nope, not really, hence the jungle of patches and hacks.

Nothing, and you can already do it - go right ahead.

Ctrl+x/c/v is pretty much a windows-only thing, so clearly they are the people you want on board. I would prefer they stay exactly where they are - it is better for not just us, but also them - AmigaOS is a long shot from being a "regular user" kind of operating system.

Did you ever see anyone suggest macOS use ctrl+x/c/v?

@thread

Can't wait for this, if there is a public beta will participate, and will buy. If printer support improves with this, will spend even more for it.

(Also looking forward to an OS4 version of the new FinalWriter.)

This news made my day!

Yeah - disappointing.

When NG Amiga HW&OS were still a long way off, it had also been bragged that the NG System should become more powerful than the classic systems.

Needless to mention that the NG Systems later could not live up to that claim...

(e.g. on a classic system you can start e.g. PC-Task and emulate a PC of the ninetees with Win95, while the NG Systems are not powerful enough for doing the same with modern PCs and Win10)

My Linux boxes at work (many) do curl-c and ctrl-v... I do these there more than on my windows OS laptop.

exactly, linux use the same shortcuts, mac use command+c/v/x but you can at least select which command to use, on classic amiga only right amiga key works so you can't comfortably copy paste with just one (left) hand. There is no reason to get stuck in the past without good reason

@billt
Linux don't do this in general, certain distros and DEs do it when they are configured to suit Windows users, using PC keyboards (or when (desperately) attempting to mimic PC keyboards with for example mac keyboards). When Microsoft soon releases Windows as a DE for Linux (and their own distro), the circle is completed.

@ExiE

You can swap left and right Amiga keys. Seems like most Amiga users are ignorant about the shortcuts that use left amiga key?

Maybe you want to run Win95 on a legacy system, I really didn't get into anything Windows based until I could get my hands on a 200 MHz processor.

From a practical standpoint, you really needed a 386SX coprocessor card to run any Windows variant adequately on an Amiga.
And without a second monitor and and ISA video card, no VGA.

Running Windows on an Amiga is a bit silly, and sounds like the computer nerd equivalent of penis envy to me.
Like Apple fanatics insisting how superior their systems are, then setting them up to run Windows as well as MacOS.

In any case, even a relatively weak NG system will run circles around a legacy Amiga.

Ctrl+ X/C/V actually began life on Unix, way before either Windows or Linux

Yes, but not as cut/copy/paste :p

There's of course relevant articles on the subject on wikipedia...

@thread

I have not been using my X1000 much recently, but would eagerly do so if LibreOffice was available.

Came back here today to see if it was available, and saw this thread again which I had participated in back in March. This thread (imho) details the development of one of the most important pieces of software for the Amiga platform, was disappointed to see it evolve (devolve?) into a cut and past/keymapper discussion. That's not to say those specific discussions are unimportant, but it derailed the thread, again in my opinion.

So where does this development stand near the end of June 2018...any results from four months of beta testing? Has there been any official statement?

For some reason they call it the Command key which isn't exactly user friendly. There's an Apple on it. Why they don't they call it an Apple key? Honestly do they know Commodore about marketing? Both Windows and Linux use the [old fashioned] Ctrl key. I call the Windows key the Logo key. Now if they just standardised the Logo key on anything we wouldn't be all over the place with the qualifier key.

@Hypex

Yes, I've gotten used to using the cntrl key as that dates all the way back to DOS.

Is all this focus on Open Office even practical?
Its a moving target like Firefox and a monolithic monster.

Also, its just not a very Amiga-like application.

If we had an application for kvm that would allow us to run Linux and an NG OS on our multi-core systems, we could just use the mainstream version when needed without the complications.

That's one solution I expect to see Power 9 users eventually adopt.

I don't want to see too much work done focusing on getting NG to run apps that work best in a different environment.

Would someone really want to run Open Office on an A1222, when it would run better on a $100 ARM or X86 laptop/tablet?

I can already tie a cheap X86 system to my MorphOS systems and the platforms look unified, why go to the trouble of making it native to run under a more limited OS on slower hardware?

I've moved beyond LibreOffice to 10-year-old Microsoft Office.
