I remember reading somewhere that one of us illustrious Amiga NG users had a Xerox postscript printer. I was wondering which printer anyone would recommend? I'm looking at either Postscript or PCL3, but PCL3 seems to be hard to find.

Also, most Postscript printers I've found tend to be laser. I can remember wanting a color laser printer for my original Amiga but they were like $20,000 back then. . They still ain't all that cheap. How about inkjet?

@StantheAmigaMan

An important question is that what do you want to print on your Amiga?
If you want to print msoffice documents not the printer driver will be the largest issue.

I have very good experiences with some current mono/color PS laser printers and PageStream.

@Lazi

Well, call me crazy but if I see something I like in Odyssey I'd like to be able to print from there to the printer, graphics and text.

Or print a receipt from the browser.
Or a LiibreOffice (or final writer, etc...) document. Spreadsheet.

Use it like people normally use printers

So what would you recommend? My HP OfficeJet 8610 doesn't want to work except through al text. I'm considering replacing it when I get the X5000 in July :)

@StantheAmigaMan

We're in a middle period of bad printer support.

We are decades out from a TurboPrint update and we don't have CUPS yet!

Keep waiting for CUPS and make do with TurboPrint for now.

That's what I was thinking as well. Now I just need to find TurboPrint. . I know, I'm pathetic.

@StantheAmigaMan

It's not pathetic to want good printer support out of the box. Sadly, although a nice new printer with built in scanner would be nice, I have to hold on to my trusty HP Deskjet 5550 as it's one of the last joint USB/Parallel port printers supported by TurboPrint. Unless I can get a DENEB or find the Rapid Road is compatible with the clock port on the Prisma Megamix board my classic may never speak to another printer again!

The NG Amigas don't seem to have it much better!

This thread gives advice on which drivers to try once you download TurboPrint for OS 4.1.

@BigD

There is a turbo print for OS 4.1? the latest I've seen is 7.60 for classic (I believe) which is... lessee 70 Euro... that's.... $55.

And we use an HP 5550 at work. Goddamn that thing is huge! I'll shop around though, may be able to get it cheaply...

No but the classic version is said to work on OS 4.1:

From Amigans.net, kilaueabart writes:

I print with an HP Officejet 6700. It handles printing from Amiga OS4 pretty well, if I am careful enough with Printer Prefs. (Well, for some reason I am no longer able to print what shows on a FinalWriter window, but that's beside the point.)

... and Irseesoft themselves comment:

Quote:
The development of TurboPrint/Amiga has ended and we don't actively support AmigaOS 4.x. According to reports from customers it should be possible to use TurboPrint on Amiga OS 4.1 but I am not sure about installation & hardware requirements. I'm sorry but we cannot provide TurboPrint/Amiga source code because of non-disclosure agreements with printer manufacturers.

Alright, I'll check into that. I noticed you said DeskJet 5550, not LaserJet 5550. Huge difference there and thank you for saving my wallet $800

@StantheAmigaMan

1) Well you can use Ghostscript and create EPS files to be print in a printing center.

2) Buy Postscript Printer... Cheapest are in the range of 1600/2000 US$.

3) Brother monochrome USB/Wifi/Ethernet Laser Printer Brother HL-L2360DW priced around 100US$ has Postscript emulation, but I don't know if postscript emulation starts automatically when receiving postscript files headers from connected computer, or if it must be selected from panel or requires Windows/Mac settings utility to be set on.

4) My WiFi/USB Epson Expression Home XP205 printer works like a charm in MorphOS, USB connected, using Turboprint and Epson C84 old driver. I cannot set higher resolutions and I am stuck at 300DPI, but it works.
I suppose many modern Epson printers can still being used with our ancient Turboprint drivers, but we should make tests and upload results on a public site on internet.

Uh? where do you live? I bought a full postscript and PCL5 and network/WiFi enabled HP Color LaserJet all-in-one-scanner thingie for ~ 200 €. It works with all my AmigaOS setups over LAN (AmigaOS 3.9 and 4.1).

@StantheAmigaMan

Got a HP LaserJet 1320n - LAN - has PS support (using PostScript Amiga driver over netprinter.device)

Works a treat once i got all the needed prefs settings figured out.

Now i can print directly from a website (with Odyssey, i.e. eBay receipts), from AmiPDF (albeit it takes ages, but it also takes ages on a PC to convert the PDF files), simple text out of Notepad and Multiview plus pictures.

Does everything i need it to do...no need for 68k soft which will sooner or later stop working anyway.

If you decide to get such a printer, let me knopw and i'll shove all the information and prefs settings your way

@Raziel

That is EXACTLY the kind of response I was looking for... detailed, specific.

I'll be picking up q 1230N (I doubt we could be lucky enough to get the DN model to work, ) whnenI get the Amiga. You can either post details here for all to see or email me :D. Your choice. Thank you my friend!!

Now on to research. 1230N...

1320N... ok so I'm dyslexic

@StantheAmigaMan

Hi Stan I use a Xerox 3225 Workcentre which was about £120.00 plus VAT last year. It supports Postscript and it also supports PCL3 emulation so it works a treat with my Amigaone500 machine.

It also doubles as a photocopier and a scanner. The Scanner function is quite handy actually as you don't even need to bother with the lack of an Amiga driver and scan items to your own email address.

Printing multiple pages on the same piece of paper is even supported

It is connected on my network using netprinter.device

I'd seriously check it out if you can.

A link to this is below but i see the price has gone up a little since last year

@outrun1978

I'll look into that one. I really wanted color instead of monochrome and a network printer just because. :D

Now... would you have any idea how I can get my music from iTunes onto an Amiga say with AmigaAMP or some such? If it weren't for iTunes I'd drop Apple like 10 hot potatoes...

EDIT: checking color toner prices... yyyyyyeeeeeeeeah let's stick with B&W. it's far cheaper :D

I added a cypher + to 100-200... Making it became 1000-2000. As long as I posted comment at 3:20 ca AM I should had sleeping with my face drolling on the monitor surface then...

However I will avoid Laserprinter in the range 249-499 Euro/Dollar unless those made by reliable manufacturers such as HP. Brother for example inspires no trust in me, but sure I must admit its quality increased notheworty in the last 10 years.

A good lase printer should allow you not only change ink/toner cartrdige, but also photosensible cylinder drum when exhausted. This increase operative life of laser printer and this feature it is not always available under 499/599. Printers costing only 169/199/249 usually allow you only to change ink/toner cartridge not the drum.
