Hello Amigans

I have a new 1 MB ChipRam Chip for my Amiga 500.The Amiga 500 is unstripped now.

I have the FAT AGNUS Chip at my eyes but I cannot keep out at the moment.

I buyed the 1 MB Chip around 10 days ago and now I am at the final stage of installing and then testing with the ACA 500+ ACA 1232.

Has anyone experience on how to do this? How can I extract the 512K Chip?

Is it difficult?

Thank you

@newlight

Do you mean extracting the old Agnus chip?

You can either get a PLCC IC extraction tool which can be found cheaply on Ebay or you can fashion an extraction tool from a paper clip if you don't want to wait around for a tool to arrive.

To make your own extraction tool you'll need a pair of pliers and bend it into a shape similar to the one below.

There are two openings on opposite corners of the socket. Put legs/end of the tool in these openings and push the tool closed and then pull the chip out of the socket.

I have haven't used a home made tool on larger chip like Agnus but found it quite effective for extracting the smaller BIOS chip in my AmigaOne XE. If you're feeling impatient it's worth a try.

What's a pair of pliers? I don't know the word.

What's the name of the tool on ebay? I want to buy it

Can you explain me a bit shorter on how to extract the FAT AGNUS?

I don't understand at all your words

Thanks

Pliers, like these.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needle-nose_pliers

For a proper extractor tool just do a search with the words "plcc extractor tool". The price on Ebay should be between 2 and 4 Euro to buy don't pay more.

I found a video showing how to do it with the proper tool.

@Rob

DO NOT use needle nose!!!

Just buy, borrow a proper PLCC extractor.

I have seen the chips and sockets destroyed by using the wrong tool.
Don't forget, the chips and socket are 20 years old and brittle.

@newlight

You have to be very careful. Don't pry the chip out. You can crack the socket, which is fragile plastic. Once it's cracked it won't grip the chip properly and the whole board is unusable. This has happened to me. Installing the new one is easy. You just have to line up the cut-off corners properly and press it in with your fingers.

@newlight

This is the tool you need.

Link.

It's very cheap if you don't mind waiting weeks for it to ship from China. If you want one sooner then look for an online retailer in Spain. Going buy UK retailers selling them it should only cost €3-4 more.

The video I posted in the above reply shows you exactly how to use the tool.
