A friend of mine have an A1200 with a strange problem: whenever we try to change resolution (example: from hires to hires laced) or increase the number of colors (ex: from 8 to 32) the amiga stalls in a grey screens (no guru) and needs to be rebooted. The strange thing is that amiga 1200 games with 256 colors from floppies works flawlessy, and even personal paint started from the same workbench that doesn't let the change of resolution/colors opens a screen in hires-lace 256 colors with no problem at all. We tried to clean startup-sequence and user startup, and to substitute the 3.0 roms with another one. The problem remains. The wb installed in hd is 3.1 . The 1200 a vanilla one, without accelerators.
Someone can help ? Thank you

@DrProcton

What happens if you select ResetWB from the Tools menu? Crash then too?

I suspect some program that cannot handle the WB signal to change resultion. All MUI programs have this function built in.

@Deniil715

If it crashes with resetwb is a problem of some software installed in the hard drive?

@Deniil715

I don't have that amiga right now, so I can only tell my friend to try this option. Can you explain better what you think can be the source of this problem?

@DrProcton

Does it crash only when you change the mode or does it also crash if you save the mode and reboot?

If it only crashes during the change, then it's most likely a third-party program, patch or library.

Besides startup-sequence and user-startup you should also clean WBStartup.

The most effect will be gained if you replace startup-sequence by the original, delete user-startup altogether (or rename it if you want to keep a backup) and move all icons out of WBStartup.

If it still crashes, Devs/Datatypes, Devs/DosDrivers and Devs/Monitors are other places to clean.

@thomas

I think that next try will be to format the hard drive partition and re-install a clean wb 3.0 workbench..after that I will report if the problem is solved or not
Thank you
