Hi

If using a meditator PCI bus board with A1200 does OS3.9 have hardware accelerated GFX or is it just redirected 2D display. For example would say doom run faster using A S3 pci card instead of AGA or would it be about the same. ?

@g01df1sh

If you use a graphics card with hardware driver support for Warp3D you will get 3D acceleration for apps and games that support Warp3D. A 3DFX Voodoo 3 PCI 16MB is really your best bet. Voodoo 4/5 also should work on the Mediator with Warp3D.

doom should run faster on rtg as it doesnt need chunky to planar conversion there. generally rtg is fater than aga, and has more color depth and much higher resolution, so its recommended for productivity, as long as applications come along with it. genuine amiga games wont even notice it usually.

@g01df1sh

Doom doesn´t support 3D accelleration - only 2D speed and CPU are important. Old S3 PCI GFX card could give few FPS, but don´t expect miracles.

Games like Quake could use 3D GFX card features (eg. on Voodoo 3/4/5) depending on the port. However, you need at least 68060 to enjoy these.

Of course not, it is close to plain framebuffer (with superb memory speed)...

no, but there are considerations about tinygl implementation with some sort hardware acceleration, given that the core provides appropriate functionality, currently said ammx, but this is not all set in stone.

warpsd accelerated support would also be thinkable, based on open implementation , which is wazp3d as example. aros and winuae provide that already.

in comparison with that mediator, while very nice hardware, allowing among others for a huge destop resolutions suffers from a limited warp3d support (there is only a driver for voodoo on 68k) and small number of games and applicatiions available. this has not changed for years and wont change anymore.

not to forget that amiga troughput to pci devices via mediator is limited to less than 10mb/s, which is magnitudes lower than apollo memory/rtg bus afaik. as soon as apollo rtg extends beyond a simple framebuffer this will even improve.

so, to sup up, vampire is in my eyes much more attractive option with some future prospect as of today.

@g01df1sh

Being a Mediator fan for my Amiga 1200 Tower, I have several spare PCI busboards I can part with for a good price if you want one. I have the LT4 and the TX models (5 slot).

not trying to spoil you a deal, still this is another argument in favour of tha vampire: it fits in the original amiga case, whild mediator needs a costly and ugly (imho) tower conversion, except for 4000/3000di models (which is what i have chosen).
