Unfortunately dosbox on ppc isn't very fast. Only x86 (and arm to a more basic degree) have jit CPU emulation for it.
Not only that, but there's other restrictions as well. No real mode iirc.
Don't quote me on it, but I don't think you can even run win9x on ppc dosbox. Even if you can you'll be stuck somewhere around 386 speeds on an a1xe, which isn't much fun to use Win9x on, let alone running software on it.

Bochs, while no faster is probably a better option if you're wanting to use it on AmigaOS.

If you want to test Win9x on dosbox however Google "PSP dosbox Win95". That will give you a link to a version of dosbox for PlayStation portable that has a hard drive image with Windows 95 installed.

Thanks but I have now an Amiga One X5000.

My Amiga One XE is under repair when my friend Torgeir from Norway can send AmigaStore a new Amiga One XE G4 motherboard.

How can I configure and run Windows 98/XP on the Amiga One X-5000?

I tried before and no luck

Its a bit of a chore to install, which is why I've suggested downloading a preexisting hard drive image.

Once you have a hard drive image put this at the end of your dosbox.conf file:

imgmount c win9x.IMG -l boot

Where win9x.IMG is the name of the hard drive image.
I'm going by memory here, but I think that's correct. Its also 5 a.m. and I've not slept so my brain is a bit fuzzy. :)

To actually copy software into the win9x setup though I recommend using a second hard drive image. While you can use file based directories under the inbuilt dos you can't access them from Windows so you'll need to copy stuff to a hard drive image 1st.
To do that use:

Imgmount d HDDimage.IMG
Mount e games

"Games" will need to be in the dosbox installs directory is using the above, or else you'll need to replace it with the path you want to mount. Then its just a case of using normal dos commands to copy content to the HDD image. For example:

E:
MD d:/gamename
CD gamename
Copy *.* d:/game name

Once the files are copied to the 2nd HDD image reset dosbox and use imgmount to mount both c and d drives and use the earlier boot arguments (the ones I mentioned earlier for booting Win9x.).

As I mentioned earlier its just passed 5a.m. here and I've not slept so my instructions may be a bit convoluted, but it covers everything so experiment a bit with it.
I'll clean it all up tomorrow.
One more thing though, if you decide to install Windows yourself rather than using a preexisting windows HDD image, make sure you start the install with a win98 boot disk/CD or there'll be problems with Ram assignment in the emulated PC and no matter how much you give it will tell you the install requires at least 16meg, then fail.

It can be a bit confusing at 1st, but once you get your head around it, its pretty simple.

Yeah I did it in the past,but I have forgotten.

If I download a Windows 98 CD image how can I choose and later install under DosBox?

I have no idea now

You use QEMU, right? Not DosBox?

@newlight

You need DosBox port compiled with dynamic CPU core, simple or normal are not compatible enough for Windows 95 (well, you can boot, but nearly no applications will run). There is no DosBox/dynamic CPU core version for PowerPC platforms. QEMU is better choice for Win95 gaming anyway.

I must admit I never installed Windows 95 in DosBox, I simply copied my hardfiles from QEMU and added drivers (S3 GFX). Non-modified DosBox has some limitations - eg. only hardfiles smaller than 500 MB are reliable and Windows 95 requires hardfiles to boot.

all the tree Qemu, dosbox and bochs
the best is qemu for emulation on LinuxPPC

I have managed to run Windows 3.11 in DOSBox without issues - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7Or73cdWKA , but never went so far to Windows 95/98. I may try them on AmigaOne X1000 and then I will report the outcome. It will be a fun to see how it will work.

@drHirudo

Yeah, Win3.11 is pretty easy to install. Win9x however is a different kettle of fish. Its quite possible, but its a bit of a learning experience.
One tip however besides my above post,.... use "Pentium_slow" for CPU type or graphics drivers will fail. I learned that only through trial and error.

@Newlight

To install from an iso you need the argument "-type CDROM" in tandem with imgmount and "boot". Alternatively you could mount both the iso and an HDD image then copy win9x cab files across to HDD image and run windows setup from there.

Not in front of a computer at the moment, so for now I'm just explaining the process rather than detailing it.
I'll do a proper clean up and explanation when I get home tonight.
You've inspired me to have a play with it again anyway. :) Think I'll even add voodoo/3dfx support to my port, which I've been putting off for a while.

Can you send a PM with your installed Dosbox configuration?

And a BOCHS configured file too?

It would be great for me and avoids the hassle of a manual configuration_

I was able to boot into Windows 95 and run OS utils, but most games and applications donŽt work, because of not compatible enough CPU core.

@newlight

My configuration files are on another computer, which I canŽt reach until tomorrow. As I wrote donŽexpect games to work under Win95, DOS versions may run fine (speed on the X5000 could be comparable to 486DX/2 66 MHz at best). From my point of view, only Amiga-like OS with useable DosBox/Windows 95 is AROS x86...

Forget about Bochs, OS4 version is slow as snail and stable as the same creature in salt.
