I have a ps type AEon keyboard and want to turn it into a usb type.
Can I just replace the connector and what are the pin-outs?

The purple adaptor doesn't work ( I tried several)

@SACC-dude

I've only seen adaptors turning an USB kbd or mouse into PS/2 one, but there is no reason why they shouldn' t exist the other way round. They all work by toggling mode of communication inside the device and therefore only work when the kbd or mouse can speak both USB and PS/2.

They only reason they won't work is when the device does not support the 2nd protocol.

Seems your kbd is PS/2 only.

@SACC-dude

If the keyboard is PS2 only (which it seems yours is), you will need an 'intelligent' adapter to interface your keyboard to the usb stack. If you type in something like 'PS2 to usb adapter' in Amazon several will come up, but so will just the simple pass-though adapters which are only useful if the device 'speaks' usb so be careful to choose one that will do the interfacing. An exampe would be this.

For while I used something like the above to interface a tablet running AROS to an old PS2 mouse and keyboard, and it worked fine.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Got an active adaptor, keyboard works in os4.x ...but is not picked up by uboot.

New note, the keyboard has a right ALT Gr key.
Never saw this before. I understand it's for extra chars

Glad the adapter is working , at least once OS4 is booted. The alt gr should just be picked up as right-alt by e.g. commodity hotkeys. I presume OS4 uses the Poseidon USB stack? If so have a look in its prefs you will see that any key on the usb keyboard can be mapped to pretty much anything you want.

Cheers,
Nigel.

@SACC-dude

what system are you using?

if it's an AmigaOne-XE you are out of luck, UBoot only recognises PS/2 on that hardware, an updated UBoot would be needed, but I don't think anybody is going to release that.

There is an UBoot environment variable you can set to swap the Alt and Amiga keys (either in UBoot itself or using the UBoot-Utility in the prefs drawer and also from a Shell with the -i'm going by memory here- "NVSetenv" command) or you could use the setting in Prefs/Input which is available on other AmigaOne systems too.

@Amigo1

No UBoot accepts USB. You have to set the stdin var before hand. To usbkbd or something.

Yep!

It won't auto sense and change it on the fly. So it can be a pain. If you need USB you need to plug in a PS/2 KB to change it. Or use UBoot Prefs from OS4 on the Hardware tab to do it if you can boot that.

Cheers. You can sit down now.

@Hypex

I can also confirm that uboot support USB Keyboard. Just tested it on my XE.

And yes this can be changed on the uboot settings prefs on OS4.

However the XE still looks for a PS2 keyb on boot. Is this possible for it to be changed?

ps. Yes I got a new AmigaOne XE -have sold my previous one however- and I am back on the XE world :)

@Morphix

I don't recall if you can disable the KB scan on startup.

Good you got a new A1 again.

@Hypex

Thanks! I am looking forward to do some Linux testing in it!
