Hi folks,
Just getting ready to jump back into OS4 development.

What's the max sized hard drive you can use with the latest OS4, using a SAM440EP ?

Tried a quick search, but can't find a definitive answer, I'm sure one of you bright sparks on here will know

@AmigaOneProductions

4 TB is about the biggest you can buy. The real limitation is the file system - FFS and SFS\0 can only address 2 TB and Media Toolbox has only recently been updated to support larger disks. I can't remember which version of MTB was provided with FE Udate 1.

IIRC there is a PDF on the CD that lists all the file system limitations.

Thanks Tony, thought it might be a 2TB limit imposed by the amiga file systems, but was not sure if there had been any advances while I've been away.

I reckon that will be big enough, it's not like the SAM will be running Windows

Actually there's 6, 8 and now 10TB drives easily available. Even larger drives exist, but they're not as widely available yet.
SSDs however are only easy to find up to 4TB. Even at that size though expect to pay $1500 and upwards. :)

What about NGFS, isn't it available for Sam440? And it supports drives up to 100EiB.

I think I have two of that size lying around here.

NGFS has not yet been generally released. It is still in beta form and only released to beta testers and owners of X-5000 (Cyrus) and A-1222 (Tabor).

I found the PDF file you are refering to, most helpful, thanks.

Seems SmartFileSystem 2 is the way to go, I work with some large files, but I think it will be a while before I need a TiB The limits on the older file systems seems to be 4Gb per file, which some of my video files might exceed.

Why don't we start a bounty asking Leif Salomonsson to release his ICEFS to AmigaOS too? It is a superb MorphOS Filesystem with high coherency good reliability and error resistant.
Dr. MorbiusFP made extensive betatesting of it at a professional level on any kind of media and HardDisks sizes, so Leif was made able to heavily debugging it releasing very stable versions of IceFS.

Availability of IceFS or both systems will be a great sign of detented policy between the two Amiga Superpowers, just as it was East and West SALT II Treaty for denuclearization 30 years ago!

Good idea... once he fixes all the bugs.

There is NGFS in betatest right now, I think it is even available with X5000 version of OS4. It will be probably part of OS4.2.

Ha ha ha ha . . . . . . OS4.2??? You mean the mythical operating system for AmigaOne systems, that was thought to be finished some time this decade? Perhaps it will be completed some time this century, but I doubt it, at least not completed with all the features that were first listed and planned for.

Actually, the only way I see OS4.2 ever being finished, is if Hyperion goes away some how, and A-Eon/AmigaKit takes over the development responsibilities in some way. They have already moved in that direction, and more development is being done and funded for AmigaOS4.x by developers/programmers being paid by A-Eon/AmigaKit, than is being done by anyone working for, or with Hyperion Entertainment.

Sad thing is that the more success and progress A-Eon makes, the less likely Hyperion will ever sell or let go of their rights (obtained by theft and dishonorable means), to AmigaOS.

Edit: As for ICEFS, I think that work on it has stopped, and more problems have been encountered by users with it, IIRC, from reports read on MorphZone. I might be wrong, or the reports of work on ICEFS being stopped, might be in error, as it is all just rumor, unless I can find facts to back up the stories.

@BoingBear

If IceFS development has been stopped by Leif Salomonsson this is a main reason to free its sources with a bounty...
It is almost stable Filesystem now (from what DrMorbiusFP said me in various phone calls we had) and if are some sparse bugs, or it has some unknown issues, if there are many people working on it, and many people adopting it as main media filesystem, then it could being perfectioned in a very reasonable time.

DrMorbius had in the past direct contacts with Leif. I will ask him to contact again the developer and indagate his intentions, if he is still interested in developing for Amiga systems or how much he asks for the sources...

Again, NGFS is in betatesting and even now available for X5000 users (X5000 version of OS4 has no SFS2).

And SFS is still developped (part of the Enhancer Software Pack), it's the most robust FS. I've been using it for many years now without any trouble.

Funny have the JFX OS4 still working. Really fast and no problems.

PFS for the oldies and SFS2 would be my choice but why to change a working One?

Because Hyperion needs a file system (or perhaps two file systems) that it owns, controls and can maintain. Only FFS and now NGFS fit those requirements, since Hyperion do not have the sources for any other file system like SFS, JXFS or PFS.
