I wounder if this would have an effect on AmigaOS 4.2 (if it ever comes out) as I understood it Hyperion said in its deal with Amiga Inc, when it went bankrupt, Amiga Inc lost the amigaOS licence and it was given to Hyperion, even if they fail to renew Amiga trademark, and Cloanto get the trademark could they actually stop Hyperion from using/selling it?

I really do think the only reason there is fighting over the Amiga name is due to the success of certain kickstarter and they can charge royalties for use of the Amiga name on such projects like (books, movies and Amiga cases), there is still valve attached to the brand.

I just hope companies see sense, they can get together talk it though, and not waste time and money on it and can come to some kind of agreement.

Without a single company able to put all the pieces together, and able to find the budget to project a small relaunch, everything is going to vanish in the next few years.

We all see the forums, as we all see that even the most passionate users get tired. Within a few years, continuing so, it will remain a dozen people at most.

Which is effectively a call to action.

I was gone for about a year, so please excuse if this question has been answered prior:

Workbench

AmigaOS Workbench

?

Does anyone have any direct links to forum discussions about this?

Thanks.

@TRIPOS

ty, but I performed a search in page (manual search would take far too long) for the term I see on Hyperion's site (see my link) "Amiga Workbench" and came up empty.
That would mean no one commented about the change in term, else it would be quoted, no?

It's simply the only realistic way to project a (small) future.
Otherwise, call it AmigaOS, Workbench or whatever you like (including AROS or MorphOS), it will count users in the fingers of 3 or 4 hands in few years.

@andres

No, I don't think the Amiga community (including AmigaOS3, AmigaOS4, AROS, and MorphOS) will be much different in size, 5, 10, 15, or 20 years from now. We will gain a few curious users, who are NOT former Amiga users from the Commodore Amiga days, and we will lose several users from the inevitable marching of time and the effects time has on the human body (death by natural cause of old age), but the over all number of users won't change drastically. The biggest drop in users has already happened, and almost everyone who is still here, are the hard core users that will remain here until they die.

I think that people like you who say that our community is doomed to die a quick death over the next few years, are about the same as the few community members who still believe that the Amiga is going to make some kind of miraculous recovery to its glory days, and it will some how become competitive with mainstream computers again. Neither of those unrealistic paths are going to happen, and our community will most likely just drag along, little changed from the way it has been for the past 3 to 5 years.

That is the most likely future that I predict anyway.

@BoingBear

I don't agree.
In italian Amiga forums there's now the 20-25% of people there were just 5 years ago, and less than 10% of people there were 10 years ago.
I don't think here is much different, and we all see this.
It's not a fact of age, it's a fact that people are bored with IPs and marks saga, confusion, reciprocal attacks, lack of progress and so on...

And it's not about getting back in old glory days. This isn't going to happen. It's about to re-create a small community of thousands users.

"...and almost everyone who is still here, are the hard core users that will remain here until they die"

Man, That sound f***ing epic :) Seriously though, I think that everyone gets bored and then comes back from time to time just to check how things are going. You still see old users coming back from time to time and those are the ones that bother to create an account, there are surely others lurking around. Sadly there are no products that interest most, maybe a lower priced X6000 with AltiVec.

" I think that people like you who say that our community is doomed to die a quick death over the next few years, are about the same as the few community members who still believe that the Amiga is going to make some kind of miraculous recovery to its glory days"

I don't think practically anyone believes that, it's just that trying to make it happen is part of the fun. The Amiga is a very peculiar system and an updated version would surely gather interest.
There are also advantages to running an exotic system, you are for example immune to threats from viruses that plague other systems. But then you can't run some of the great programs available today for Windows.
We all see the markets going towards big monopolies that use open source software. These big monopolies are also in bed with governments. Even is there was a miraculous AOS version with all the amazing features one would dream of it, the average Joe would just buy and believe the hype from the big players. Just look at how TDT TV was advertised (in this case also from governments) and the hype that the image would be better, then when they implemented it they used 10% of it's capabilities with super compressed streams with lower quality than the previous analog streams (with a few exceptions of course). It was pretty painful to watch a football game with a big screen TV and seen all the green squares moving...
The Amiga and whatever great other OSes and systems are out there would never make it in this world, even if they were updated to today's standards. But, and this is a big but, there are always curious people that like computers and that would maybe try it if it had some advantages.

I've noticed some "session expiration" messages. If you can not reach the above listings, please inform and I'll lay out the steps.

Sure, a T2080 based 8 core, 16 thread AmigaOne X6000 with AltiVec.

I'd buy that. Then again, that's the cpu planned for the laptop project.

The e6500 core is lightly slower than the e5500 cored cpus in the X5000 (at 1.8 GHz) , but it has a higher mips rating, and is capable of four times the number of threads a P5040 can handle.

I'd buy it (after I get my hands on a P5040 based X5000).

The T2080 has 4 cores, 8 threads, the T4160 has 8 cores, 16 threads and the T4240 has 12 cores, 24 threads.

@WolfpackN64

Yep, I screwed that up, 8 virtual cores, 4 physical cores.
I'm a little more familiar with the T4160 and T4240.

Considering that the T4240PCIE-PB Development system is only $2,200.00.
It ought to be possible to consider those processors as well.

And 16 or 24 virtual cores is no longer as outrageous as it used to be with the new Ryzen and Xeon cpus popping up that can handle similar thread counts.

BUT, right now, an 8 thread T2080 sounds good.

That still has twice the thread capability of a T5040, WITH AltiVec.

What would have been useful, if these cpus had continued to be developed, would have been VMX extensions.

After all, that's the primary reason they aren't compatible with upcoming Linux distros.

Yeah, or NXP is going to throw us a new chip next year (as in their roadmap) or embedded PowerPC is as good as dead.Though I consider it strange since there really is a market for PowerPC on the embedded side.

As you can see from the later posts in this thread detailing the filings from euipo and benelux, we were both wrong in our agreed upon assumption.

Yes indeed...nothing happened with "AmigaOne" registration and that is not logical.

Why? I am sure there is a good (legal) reason but all that is beyond me. We can obviously see only part of the story. Who know what is going on behind the scene
