Oh, I didn't mean deviant hacking, I meant legitimate hardware and software hacking. I really liked the early State sponsored PDP-11 clones. And I've seen some neat stuff done by Russians with the MC68K.

There was also a huge number of ZX Spectrum clones available in Russia.

I remember it being claimed in Sinclair User that the huge popularity of the Spectrum in Russia was due too the small size of the original model making it easier to smuggle in. Sadly Roman busted that somewhat romantic myth for me a number years back when I asked him if there was any truth in it.

@Rob

Popularity of zx spectrum in Russia was only because one man can build a computer at home, just with soldering iron, and there was milions of machines done by entuziasts. Even my first zx-specturm was done by some 40 years old alhocolic which life destroes after USSR broke :) And damn, joystik wasn't working as he wrongly solder it all.

@Hypex

Oh, I get it! Iggy Pop...

Nah, my name is Jim (well, James actually).
But my last name begins with IG, and I used to work in a company with only 12 employees that had 3 Jims.
So, the first guy was Jim, the second we called by his last name, me...I went by an old High School nickname.

And that IS way off topic.

BTW - I'd still like to grab one of those Russian PDP-11 clones.

The PDP-11 in some ways is the precursor of the 68000.
Features from the PDP-11 pop up in the 68K, and both are inspired more by mainframe processors than the current microprocessors of the day.

The Soviets were pretty slick copying that one.

There are Chinese and Russian cpus I'd like to have the opportunity to check out to this day (like Longsoon's MIPS cpus), but when you try to contact semiconductor companies in these countries to don't even respond to your inquires.
Kind of pisses me off.
If the Russian want to join the rest of the free world, why aren't they willing to market products to us (other than vodka)?

Dunno. Is there any way to test it without soldering iron and buying stuff ?:) Like maybe some old os3x app, or something else which can check it ?

Check the pinout in the manual.(?)

@Signal
Found in manual that:

Quote:

The CPU provides two UARTs, one for external RS232 communication and one for MCU supervisor interface. The UART 0 signals are available on a DB9 connector, P16. This is a 5 wire RS232 interface with RTS and CTS

Can't find exactly pinout diagram

Some 350,000 Lada Riva, Niva and Samaras were sold in the UK between 1974 and 1997.

@kas1e

Does the "Start Classic AmigaOS" option in the boot menu do anything yet?

Absolutely! BTW - Can you get me one of those Putin riding a bear shirtless statues?
They are just TOO amusing.
It would make a great conversation piece over here.

On the X5000, what is the max resolution that video can be displayed full screen?
I have heard HD video is too much for one core of the P5020 (since we don't yet have gpu assisted decoding).
Will it do 720p video without dropping frames?

We got some of the Ladas that were based on the Fiat 124 sedan over here (not sure what model that was, it looked like a Fiat 131 sedan, but with an optional crank handle to start the engine).
Canada got a larger share than were shipped into the US though.

Obviously, the Russians CAN build serviceable, somewhat reliable goods.
I'd kill to have a Fiat 124 Spyder right now (although I'd be willing to bet they didn't license THAT model).

RTS, CTS. That is full, not just Rx/Tx. Thank You.

@Signal

There is also some other mcu debug serial terminal (on the mb itself, not in rear slot), noted like "The MCU also provides serial debug interface for status reporting of the read voltages and temperature rails. This uses a 6 pin FTDI USB-TTL cable pinout (P18)". And that one "pure", pinout are 1 - ground, 4 - rx (in), 5 - tx(out).

Nope, and i think it was in old uboot only (that one which was included for betatesters), in the normal one (i.e. that one which all users have), there is no such entry, just those ones:

start amigaos
start morphos
start linux
boot options
system info
commad line

I currently use 1440x900, tried also 1920x1200 ok too. Didn't tried more myself, but i read somewhere that up to 4k resolutions works fine.

Dunno, didn't tested.

Cool, I'm not too worried about HD, as I usually drop resolutions so that I can play back video on other devices.
720p is more than adequate for me.

@kas1e

I wasn't kidding about the bear statue, do you think you could arrange to get me one?

The Electronika computers I can source here.
Trying to figure out the keyboard or whatever OS it uses, that is another issue.

And Spectrums, clone or otherwise, hold zero interest for me.

While my X5000 is sunning itself in a warehouse in beautiful Slough, I'm curious about a pair of jumpers on the motherboard labelled CPU LEDs. What are they for?

For What i understand with my tests it are needed when the cpu are in standby or wake up.
If i turn on the other machine in my LAN the led turn on waiting the wake up signal probably.
The e5500 are first of all a comunicator processors

You showed at the beginning of this thread a picture of the AmigaOne System Information Screen. Under the title 'Memory' there is this 'CL=9'... What CL values are possible in the case of X5000/20, and what is it depending on? If you e.g. put a 1333Mhz and 1600MHZ in X5000, do you get different CL values for them...? With what type of Dimm did you get that CL=9?

Regards,

Gregor

Thanks! Yesterday I bought exactly the same card you have and it is working So Asus R7 250 2GB GDDR5 is the one that is working also on A1222.

The card does not need any any additional power connectors also. I guess it will be fine.

250 wihtout X wasn't supported before, but they are now , and they ok and for nova and for old w3d/minigl. As far as i understand they usuall Oland chipset, but at least my one after tests wasn't Oland one, while in shop it was called as 250 without X gddr5 :) In other words, if you will take that one, chances that all will be fine 90% :)

By the time Tabor is released, the more capable RX 550 ought to be available.

We all wear jeans, boots, and cowboy hats, speak with a southern drawl, eat nothing but hamburgers and fries, and listen to Elvis records over here.

BTW, you forgot to mention borscht.

And when are you going to answer my request for the bear statue?

Over here in our Hotel some French customers asked that are there bears outside?

Might be but they fear people. Once got 5 meters away and stand up. Just peacefully back up.

Really there is no such fear as they go to Kasie;)

A question for the A5000. Is there comming a WB to fully support the cores &internet?

Still waiting for the AmigaoneXE..
