@kas1e

yes of course... you have to configure or install 3rd party software yourself, even when using Windows. Amiga was and is very flexible but also not very "dummy"-friendly so nothing for people without amiga experience or at least high motivation to fiddle around

Network should be technical working in my view except of course that you have to configure it yourself

File sharing or remote control of a Windows system requires a little bit of effort but I don't need to configure anything to get an OS4 system on the net unless for some reason I wanted to ditch my cable access for 56k or whatever.

I don't see how this is a problem. We should be it using less and less. And 68K is emulated. If 68K is broken because of SMP then fix the emulator. 68K API can be isolated to work seperately.

...

I don't think you addressed what OlafS25 was talking about, when he said intergrated components. I would understand this to mean things like expecting Ethernet to work out of the box. And if some ports like that don't work on OS4, then trying to say it is designed to run OS4, will fall on its feet as a catch phrase.

Setting up a board one would understand what is needed or one would hope it came with a guide as to what works. For a full system it would be confusing if there was a perfectly working port and a card was inserted where plugs had to be diverted too. This happened to my friend who plugged cables into my onboard sound and USB on my A1 only to find they didn't work since I used PCI cards to plug cables into.

The other problems newlight is experiencing, I can't really comment on much more. One time he is failing to run games. Another YAM is failing to download games. In between games crashing. It sounded like he didn't have internet working at all at one point. But YAM does need some more user friendiness when setting up an account and some kind of wizard or template for popular types like GMail or Yahoo. It asks too many questions it should figure out itself. I think, "It's Amiga, so let's let's make it complicated, with all these settings the user doesn't really need", is an old attitude and we need to move on.

Oh BTW, not everything in Windows is click, click, work. I get click, click, nothing happened.

As stated by others, its a non-issue.
If SMP breaks either 68K OR PPC applications, a sandbox could be set up for those applications.

Unfriendly programs could then be limited to one core.

OK, now I get it.

Pity about Spectre660, he was a good resource.
I didn't always agree with him, but then, do I ever?

Make sure to use quartz based sand to fill that box

Pure silicon, we have been going around with the idea for awhile.
Probably not that big a deal on a dual core system (where an ASMP solution might suffice), but with four core systems becoming available, simple ASMP ins't going to cut it.

Probably not...when I think of sandboxes I think of everything from racially insensitive jokes to an old friend of mine that used to tell people to "pound sand" (I still don't know what that means).

Why don'y YOU explain to me what you were implying?

BTW - I just got that question from someone visiting from Pennsylvania in one of our Delaware State Forests earlier this week.
"No Miss, no bears in the entire state".

AND, I got an off topic "WARNING!" for a post earlier in the thread where I DO mention something about the X5000, but we also got a little off track discussing Lada automobiles (ALTHOUGH, that IS Russian and our friend is Russian).

Really guys? Whoever did that couldn't report the bear inquiries (especially the one that stands alone)?! Hmm- "The bear stands alone...", sound like a song from my childhood.

On the X5000, now that we know that OS4 is going to struggle to decode HD video without stuttering, could the second core be used to assist in the process?
Or would that, being as its no faster than the primary core, be pointless?
And if so, what about gpu assisted decoding or some other hardware assist?

@thread

Well I am now joining in on the X5000 fun having bought my motherboard today and am awaiting it's delivery and other components over the coming week.

@Kas1e

I notice you picked up a CMi-8738 PCI-E sound card for use with the machine...have you had any issues with it as I have seen on the Hyperion forum that some people have had a few problems with this type of sound card and there are conflicting reports on what does work or not

On the CMi-8738, does it have to be the PCI-e variants, or can the PCI versions also be used.
And on the PCI slots, can the older PCI cards that worked in past systems be used in the X5000?

I dunno am asking Kas1e the question lol
Actually it is a PCI card

I have ordered a CMI-8738 PCI card off Amazon at £6.99 so if that doesn't work it's not too much money wasted.....

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01HPV8UDK/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item

If it doesn't work I'll then try the sound card off my Sam 460 machine....

Which sound card do you have in your Sam?

And you would think the CMi-8738 PCI card would work...let us know what happens.

It's an Envy24HT which sits in my Sam.... But will let the thread know which of the two work 😉

@thread

Started putting my X5000 together on Friday night. Assembled the basics, switched it on and - oh no! No power.

Left it, slept on it, and Saturday came back. Stupid me, I've never used a modular PSU before. BOTH plugs need to be connected.

Power on, boot up to splash screen. Yah! Next problem, after the splash screen all is dark.

Assumed it was the GFX card, a Sapphire Radeon 7850. Other 7850s are listed on Hans' site as compatible, although no mention of the Sapphire.

Put in a 6570 borrowed from a SAM, so I know it works. Finally able to boot into workbench!

Determined to get the 7850 to work, I bought Radeon Southern Islands driver from AmiStore. Swapped the cards around, but still no change. Looks like the Sapphire Radeon 7850 is *not* compatible.

A local store has an Sapphire R5 230 for sale only $57, and an auction site has a Sapphire 6850. I will try and get the 6850.

There is a clip on the motherboard that snaps into the bottom of the video card making removing it very difficult, and painful on the finger tips.

Otherwise, all is working. Started getting WB the way I like it. Have got online, Odyssey is pretty impressive. Don't have a sound card yet, so I can't comment on that. Videos play OK, but there's screen tearing, I guess that's because we don't have hardware acceleration. Can't check sound sync though.

So, it looks good. The incompatibility has me bummed, but overall its a good machine.

Fabulous card, I'd use that out of preference.
It probably produces better quality sound than the CMi based part.
I sold the one I had only because the audio driver for it under MorphOS is no longer maintained.

Yeah...of the two, you probably ought to try to grab the 6850, the R5 230 is a pretty low performing card.
BUT, since you already have a copy of the Southern Islands driver, I'd try to find one of the GCN Gen 1 cards.
OR I'd try to get the 7850 working, flash it with an updated bios, possibly the bios from a similar card known to work (but then, I'm a very persistent hacker).

If you weren't so damned far away, I have an HD 7770 sitting here right now.

I do think the GCN cards have some advantages over the earlier cards, BUT a 6850 is a good performer if you can get one at a good price (which again is damned weird, because I have a 6850 and a 6950 here as well).

Anyway, the R5 230 is a Terascale 2 card, and what you'd really want would be an R7 250X, R7 265 (not 260), or an R9 270/270X/280/280X (all GCN1, and a LOT more powerful than the R5 230).
OR one of the older 7000 series GCN cards.

BTW - Guys, does that driver also support the R5 240? It ought to as its a GCN1 card too, but I never see it mentioned.
Oh, and sorry about the multiple edits, I seem to be quite lysdexic today.

The R5 240 is now supported for under the latest version of the Radeon HD driver (2.23 I think) it also supports Warp 3D Nova from the info on the Warp3D Nova wiki page

Did you buy latest radeonHD ? As if no, then you have basic/simple os4-default driver, which have no hw acceleration (so no compositing), no more than 1024x768, and all the stuff disabled.

edit: and r5-230 didn't supported by 3d (not by warp3d_Si, not by warp3d nova). Few days ago Alfkil ask the same on amigans.net just to found it.
