Hi there.
Anyone uses(if exists) a quite update Linux ppc distro on Pegasos2 G4 and can signal to me?

I noticed that latest debian ppc exists but dunno if pegasos2 was supported...

I need an updated browser to open google drive and Yahoo mail basically.

Thank you.

edit: a checked a bit more and seems that debian supports Pegasos2 but there was some installing problems...

@Tuxedo

I've noticed that Debian CDs have had Pegasos support for years. I suspect because it was easy enough to throw a few more files on against the A1 where it would need that as well as a boot block. The Pegasos has also normal working hardware unlike the A1.

Now, the Pegasos looks like it is a CHRP compatible platform, as that's how it is considered on a Debian CD. If you examine the files you will see an install script that can be booted on the Pegasos but the kernel is missing. At least last time I looked.

I don't have a Pegasos so can't do any testing. But I wonder if a working CD could be created by duplicating a Debian CD with the Pegasos kernel or initrd files. That may work.

I've also read that the Debian CD does start to install but fails in the end. Don't know if it's suitable but it was suggested to use expert mode and GRUB bootloader. In this thread:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2015/05/msg00023.html

I've seen files like the following missing:
install/powerpc/vmlinuz-chrp.initrd

I helped some users over at a1k.org to install Debian Jessie on their Pegasos2. IIRC apart from a boot image generation bug in mkvmlinuz, the installer was working. But this bug in mkvmlinuz should be fixed by now.

You should also choose a different desktop than GNOME3, as this desktop doesn't support R200 graphic cards anymore. MATE could be a good alternative.

@Geri

A universally keyed R300 ought to work in a Peg2.
The Pegasos provides 3.3 volts to its AGP slot, which can limit your video card selection (or something like an HD 3850 AGP card would even be possible).

There ought to be a hack to lower Peg2 AGP voltage, but I guess no one has ever felt motivated.

Pity as there may, one day, be MorphOS 3D video drivers for the 3850, 4650, or 4670 AGP cards (and there are an unaccelerated drivers already).

Yes, if it's universally keyed then it should work. For the R200 cards it's just GNOME3 that has a problem with them.

Thank you for yhd mate hint... How aboyt xfce or the old(if still working) window maker?
I dont need any complex window manager... And also have only 1gb so simpler was better 😉

Edit: I noticed that on Debian download section there was a debian xfce disc...

Exig2: I have Radeon 9000pro

XFCE and WindowMaker should work fine, as they don't require any modern 3D graphics acceleration.
LXDE would also be a good alternative for low memory systems.

I vaguely remember that the PegII users over at a1k.org copied the Linux boot images on a FFS partition and used some script from Aminet to generate a boot menu, but I would have to re-read the incredibly long thread(s) over there first for more detailed information.

Linux itself supports RDB partitioned disks, so it can certainly boot from them.

@Morphix

Yes, "bootmenu" is what I had in mind. Thanks for the link!

There was once a group who created a PPC Linux Distro called Yellow Dog Linux. It was made mainly on Pegasos II, so it should present an high degree of compatibility.

(4 or 5 developers were from Naples. Miky'060 sold personally them Pegasos machines)

I never heard it linked to the Peg2, usually it was something IBM pointed to.
Interesting.

@Geri

I installed the debian on Pegaos2 and get a weird*and unexplained( error on end of installation(at 95% after installing program&desktop packages) and so finished installation so tought to boot manually and tryed to load the installation cd kernel(previously copyed to hdd) that way:

boot ide0:5 vmlinuz-chrp.initrd root=/dev/sda12

but still loadnig installation process alsoif from hdd insttead from DVD(and yes the DVD wasnt on my DVD reader)...

ok...I-m really noob on Linux but the kernel in the DVD was only made for installation? cant be used to boot in normal mode?

Any way to use that kernel to boot Linux and than from inside installed Linux solve the issue?

Sorry for stupid questions...

@Tuxedo

So what's the problem? It still tries to boot off DVD?

Perhaps examine the boot args from the Linux CD and see what it uses and what could cause it to be confused.

@Hypex

The problem was that it still boots in install mode...maybe because the vmlinux that I load was some sort of install disk image?

I really dunno...

Any hint?
