@Overflow

Funny, I never thought of AROS 68K as an NG OS, rather as just a replacement for AmigaOS (and a slower one at that).

I suppose if more advanced features migrate to it.

Right now...I'm not sure I'd use it in preference to AmigaOS.

What questions?
Questions about whether you paid for your copy of AmigaOS for your stand alone Vampire?

No one worries about that with other FPGA systems. AmigaOS can still be purchased (and its cheap).
So, again, what's to question?

@iggy

you can use both

the main advantage is that it can be adapted to the improved hardware and is not dependent on individuals, certain companies or teams. And it includes features like RTG, AHI, Network Stack and USB-Support out of the box

@iggy

legality about using 3.1 roms and P96 (RTG)

there were a lot of weird discussions about that f.e. on a1k (german forum)

Definite advantages there. Any video cards above the Radeon 9200 supported?
And what about drivers for PCI bus boards?

I am not involved on Aros X86 development so I cannot answer there

on Aros 68k and Vampire/Apollo you need drivers that access the framebuffer, up to now there was a not very optimized driver using P96 and that using the framebuffer

PCI? On 68k no topic. Theoretical yes but you need drivers of course

on X86 I know there was work to support USB 3.0 but I do not know how far they got

my main interest always was 68k and I still think that 68k is the only base for some success because of the huge software base there, the weak point of any NG platform

Weird, huh?
If you buy the roms, don't you own them and the right to install them where you will?
And the whole Picasso96 hot mess is ridiculous.

Then again, NG OS' outside of OS4 implemented alternative RTG solutions long ago, so yes, it does solve that problem.

OK...I could see using both solutions, but not because of legal issues.

That would be nice, but I don't use it on my Windows or Linux hardware yet.

I would say it this way... 3.1 has lots of patches that are not available on aros. Some are included, some 68k patches work, others not. Many programs work, some not. So depending on what you want to do 3.1 is still better option. I assume that people will (in many cases) have both installed and boot what they like to use in a current situation. There might be software in future that uses OS features or offers more advanced features when using aros because those are not available on standard 3.1. Aros might be faster in certain situation when it gets adapted to specific features. Software directly hacking hardware will run everywhere as long using a vampire or a standalone based on same core.

USB 3.0 is cool when having it on the mainboard and hardware supporting it. The difference is really visible. But it is certainly not the most important problem, more important is to have supported hardware at all.

regarding roms I do not know... as far as I know you can use roms as long as you own the hardware and thus the roms (A1200/4000). The only legal source was Cloanto who had a license for emulation, now additional Hyperion. The situation was not 100% clear there. Additional roms has to be adapted and extended for new features, of course you can add patches but that only works to a certain extent. Aros roms are available in source and can be extended if needed.

Yeah, I have it on my X64 system, and I also have a PCIe card, but I don't have any hardware that requires it.
I should definitely be a boon for external drives.

well i dont see it as a particular milestone. i have seen this screen years ago on my amigas, whether on rgb port or rtg, but its good that people finally realize that an improved amiga system is within reach, and that it isnt magicks to have it boot on an amiga.

no. for the time being zorro cards are working, apollo hidd is in works as well, ive been told (ive seen some yet distorted output images on dev ml). other than that amiga pci briges have not yet been implemented except to very rudimentary extent as there has not been any significant demand so far. that might change. in which case likely p96 drivers will remain compatible, while aros gallium/noveau drivers might become an option, who knows.

Here's one vote for it right here.
While I do have some laptops, every other computer I get much use out of has an expansion bus.

@tommysammy

I would be interested to know why people do not like AROS? Because of the different kind of integration of 68k software in Aros, using UAE and nothing like Petunia? Aros 68k directly runs 68k software, you do not need special compiled software for it

cmon, seriously? aros supports stadard buses just fine, how else would it work on pc hardware, even within a virtual machine? its the device drivers for maiga hardware, in particular matay prometheus and élbox mediator bridges are not ready.
