| Is it possible to partition an external USB drive? I know how to use Media Toolbox to partition my internal IDE drives, but when I attach an external hard drive to my system, the system sees it with the Info command, but when I go into Media Toolbox, it does not see the drive. Can this even be done somehow? Thanks. |

You can bring up the commodity Exchange, should be able to show some control interface from there.
Select USB MassStorage and Press Show Interface. this should show you a window, where you can press "Details".
You should find that device your looking for is usbdisk.device.
Then you might change the tooltype of media toolbox you should be able put RDB partition on it.
The more correct way is maybe to do it in windows with diskpart, if you wont to keep the standard PC MBR partition table. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 22-May-2017 at 11:30 PM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 22-May-2017 at 11:28 PM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 22-May-2017 at 11:27 PM.

When you start SYS:System/MediaTolBox the first window lists devices to which drives might be "attached"
For example I see:
sii3114ide.device diskimage.device usbdisk.device
Double click on usbdisk.device and it shold list the ineterted sticks and usb disks.
You can then INstall and partition the USB disk exactly as if you would a hard drive.
NOTE: only use this method if you want to use it exclusively with amigaOS

There is no need to set any tool type, though if one *is* set it might limit the device to th one set in the tooltype. not sure.

Well, I a little bit confused since when I start Media Toolbox on my uA1c, the devices that I see and can select from are: a1floppy.device a1ide.device I do not see any: usbdisk.device
However, when I run Exchange and click on USB MassStorage and then Show Interface with a flash drive connected, I do see a device in Exchange of usbdisk.device,0 Any idea as to how to get usbdisk.device to show up in Media Toolbox?

I can only think of this. First, making sure MTB is closed and pull out your stick. Insert your stick and wait for it to be acknowledged. By this time the device should be there. So now reopen MTB is see if that usbdisk.device shows up. |

| @Ned On my system usbdisk.device only shows up in MTB when a USB stick (drive?) is inserted. You can try entering "version usbdisk.device" in a shell to confirm it's presence on your system.

Thanks. I tried this without a usb stick connected and got the message "object not found". I then plugged a usb stick in, tried it again, and it found usbdisk.device version 53.39. When I then ran media toolbox, I now have a usbdisk.device to select from. I then plugged the USB hard disk in and reran Media Toolbox, but Media Toolbox only seems to see the usb stick and not the hard drive. However, USBInspector sees both USB devices. Also, the Info command only sees the USB stick and not the hard drive. Any ideas? |

You could run SYS:System/Mounter and see if it shows up there. If so you could try mounting it. I doubt if that will work but it might be worth a try.

Is it possible that the drive is too big for the Amiga to handle? This is a Western DIgital 1 terabyte drive.
I have formatted this as a FAT32 drive on my MacBook. When I plug it into my uA1c, the Info command says: USB0: No disk present
USBInspector says: Mass Storage easystore 25FC Type: Interface Product: easystore 25FC Vendor: Western DIgital Serial no: some stuff Version: 10.19 Class: Mass Storage Subclass: 6 Driver: MassStorage Device Task
T:USB.log reports the following (can anyone help me interpret this and see what is wrong):
I: [19:47:35] hub.usbfd | HUB | Device found on port 2 of hub "Rear Roothub (uhci.usbhcd/0)". I: [19:47:36] hub.usbfd | HUb port | Device at port 2 of hub "Rear Roothub (uhci.usbhcd/0)" is full-speed. I: [19:47:36] USB stack | New Fkt | Fkt 0x6fe440b0 at level 1 I: [19:47:36] hub.usbfd | HUB | Device on hub port 2 successfully added. I: [19:47:36] USB Fkt Init | Init Fkt | Fkt 0x6fe440b0 is {Vendor: 0x1058, Product: 0x25FC, Class: 00.00} I: [19:47:36] USB Fkt Init | Init Fkt | Fkt 0x6fe440b0 initialized
Thanks

Your log looks fine. You don't have Linux on the same machine to compare? Do you have a powered hub to connect with? A lot of these drives need more power than a single USB2 port can provide, especially if they are USB3 drives. Though there is no sign in the log of power trouble I wonder if it has enough. I have a powered hub as well as piggy back USB cable to get power from two ports. |

I got a powered USB hub, but I still get the same results. My Amiga detects that the device has been plugged in, but Info does not show that a USB device is present. My USB hard drive came with a USB 3.0 cable. Could this be part of my problem that the cable and/or drive being USB 3.0 aren't recognized by my Amiga?
