Hi

I am having lots of issues with two of my a1200 refusing to boot from flash drives. Also have visible lines down the screen when it's black. I believe I might be a victim of bad caps. Is there anyone that would be interested in re capping and servicing my a1200 . I'm in the Sudbury Suffolk area

@g01df1sh

its not necessarily capacitor issue. flash drives can be picky themselves.

@g01df1sh

I have done many recaps see here.

But I have only done my own machines, verified they worked then sold them on. Wouldn't dare do one for someone else. Best best in the UK is Amigakit I would think. There's a few people on eBay also offering the service.

Thanks,

Mike

Aciil is doing recapping work, as well as repair of other Amiga electrical trace or component problems, but he is located in the USA, so postage would be an added cost. Better to find someone in the UK to do the work (but for anyone in the states that needs work done, I believe that Aciil does great work).

@g01df1sh

You could try AmigaKit or ask Bebek at English Amiga Board forum or Amibay forum. He is located in the UK.

@g01df1sh

So what happens if you just take the flash drive out and use the floppy to boot ?

I had a yellow screen on a 2000 yesterday. Took out the Motorola and reseated and working a treat. In fact I have mended so many computers this year alone by reseating chips, swapping stuff out and have yet to ever recapp a machine. I had toubles with a 600 and just went through the process of isolating the issue and now working fine. I put one of these flash cards in a 600 but refused to work with the floppy drive so I just put it in another machine. Maybe check all our connectors and contact the person selling the card and or read up on them and see if there is an issue.

If you strip the A1200 back to the bones of just the motherboard... take out the floppy drive even and plug in an external drive and boot... if the machine boots and you can two mouse down etc then there isn't much up with the 1200. Also reseat the RoMs but do remember where the empty slots were.

Never plug in or plug out anything on the back port line with the power on. Do not touch anything with the power on. Earth yourself and be safe.

Just interesting that I have like 30 Amiga 1200s and they all work and none have been recapped. I even have a 1200 in a 2000 case, and she works. In truth its probably the last thing I would ever do.. or more likely never do. Still yet to find an Amiga with that problem. So rare or I'm dead lucky. But then my favourite 1200 has been running every day since November 1993.

I trust you checked your ports to make sure you didn't bust out a pin or have the red ribbon edge to the cable the right way round; you are not shorting the shielding out on a pin; have the power connected properly; have the floppy cable inserted properly; the video port connected properly; the monitor working properly etc etc. You could get it recapped and still have one of the above issues. My money is on the card, but hey.

@scuzz

I tried an old 120mb hard drive and that boots ok so it looks like a CF related issue. I think I will the original Amigakit CF and reinstall just WB3.1 to start with in uae. If I use my Amigakit Workbench disks in the A1200 to prep the CF it asks to write to the install disk which is write protected.

@g01df1sh

Well after a lot of testing have now confirmed A1200 board to be ok. What I do have is 2 x faulty ide drives 2 x faulty CF cards. I have managed to install workbench 3.1 from floppy disks on to my A1200 using a buffered ide interface and a 3.5" drive to test install went fine and the A1200 booted in about 2 seconds after install finished.

2 Faulty ide drives are now in the bin. I will try and source another from work on Friday.

In my search for working out what was wrong I found this video helped a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_LT5eDNQOI

Solved the install floppy being write protected issue.

Closer to a working WHDload system now.
