Getting XADFS working with AISS

AISS creates a dir (sys:Prefs/Presets/tbimages) with 5461 tiny icon files. This dir is very slow to copy when making system backups & maybe causing other apps to start slower on the less powerful systems. From what I understand, I can create an tbimage.lha file & XAD-FS will extract any file in that archive as needed. This would reduce the tbimages dir down to 1 file from 5461 & make backups so much faster. The only thing thats stopping me is the instructions in the xad_fs archive, to vague for me to get it working. If others have xad-fs working, it would be nice to have step by step instructions to achive this for dummies.

Thanks for any help

I don't use XAD_FS but I D/L it and tried it out. Works for me. Here is all I did:

Installed DAD_FS with the included installer.
Used lha to create TBImages.lha (lha a ram:TBImages.lha Work:TBImages).
Entered "MountXAD ram:TBImages.lha" in a shell.
Entered "list XAD0:Tbimages" in a shell.
Spent a minute or 2 watching the image files scroll by in the shell window

EDIT: You might want to add "assign TBImages: XAD0:TBimages" after XAD0: is
mounted.

@Xenic

Thanks for testing, I did get it mounted & assigned before I posted. I have YAM set to use AISS, but it can't find the TBImage archive to load the images. Something is missing, thats why I asked for help.

@sundown

Finally going to try it eh? :)

1. install xadf3... done.
2. lha a -ZFrx (somewhere):tbimages tbimages:
3. rename the tbimages.lha to just tbimages
4. Create a DosDriver in Devs:, the file containing a single line:

Handler = L:XADFileSystem

5. add an icon to it with the following:

default tool: C:Mount

Tooltypes:

Activate = 1
Startup = (somewhere):tbimages

6. remove any AISS: assigns or startup code you might have and reboot.

There are only two programs and one developer that I have found that fail to work, one program is fixed, one I've not reported the problem yet and the other is a hollywood bodger who hardcodes full paths instead of using assigns.

Found that 'lha a -ZFrx (somewhere):tbimages' worked much better.

Thanks for supplying the missing instructions, works a treat now.

Only thing, it puts up a tbimages icon on the WB, be nice if I could get rid of it, ok got rid of the box Icon & now a disk icon shows, much better looking.

Just hide it with workbench prefs.
