| Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get a Kensington Trackball working on an X5000 (apparently is was the last one made by Amiga on the Lake, lucky me) running OS 4.1. Final Edition.
I'm basically a brand new Amigan, I've run several Linux distros, but that was probably about 7 years ago, and AmigaOS is definitely different, so I only sort of have an idea what to do.
The mouse sort of works when I attach it via USB, but it does what can be seen happening in this video:

Presumably this is just a matter of calibrating it in some manner and/or editing a config file to process the Usb input properly, I just don't know how to go about it in OS 4.1 If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated since I'd really like to be able to use this mouse in Personal Paint.
Also, for whatever reason, the X-Dock started loading on boot up, and when I try to manually run it nothing happens. Any suggestions? I was just going to reinstall from the enhancer cd, but there might be an easier way.
Thanks, Chris |

I would not know what to do other than replace the trackball, but It looks like the right mouse button signal is sent whenever the pointer is moved. Can you test the trackball on a different computer? |

I've tried it on my windows computer and it works. There is some kind of windows software that can interact with the trackball to customize it the button functions. I'm going to mess around with this, since it's possible that the trackball has some kind of internal software . . .
It's really bizarre behavior. |

Not at all. There are some HID devices which differ from the standard devices, and sometimes they differ quite a lot. I have a Fujitsu el-cheapo mouse here, which has different speeds (!) and directions for x and y axis, which in turn leads to the pointer jumping around wildly if you move the mouse as you´re used to.
I did a driver for the Cherry XeroMouse, which wasn´t "standard", too (, well, in fact it is standard, but the "report" given by the XeroMouse is nonsense and the direction of the scroll wheel events is reverted. With the special driver it works nicely). Without the driver it doesn´t work at all.
Most likely there is a problem with AmigaOS4 hid.usbfd not interpreting the device report correctly, or there is a "faulty" report within the device itself. This leads to the bizarre behaviour of this special device.
If I would know about the device report of the Kensington trackball, I could try to make up a preliminary solution for this (based on the XeroMouse driver). |

I sympathize with your goal. I used to have a serial trackball that clipped on to the side on my laptop's keyboard. It beat using a mouse as all I had to do was roll a finger around to move the pointer.
Maybe you can find another trackball that will work in place on the Kensington unit. |

Yeah, I think this is basically what's happening, though the solution is presently beyond my technical skill. Is the device report you need available via the gui or do I need to get it via command line? And if so, can you tell me the OS 4 command? |

My Logitech M570 trackball works fine, it's just that the Kensington unit is much better for fine control, which will make it really good for Personal Paint (Logitech uses the thumb, whereas Kensington uses index, middle, and ring fingers). |

Unfortunately, it is much more complicated... you would need a USB snoop tool (either Windows or Linux based, at least atm.) to actually see what the Kensington device is sending to the host.
Even more unfortunately, the Wireless Expert Trackball is quite expensive, so I won´t buy one just for snooping purposes.
So, if there´s anybody there at your place who is able to snoop down the trackball report data, this would be helpful. |

Oh great, I have a windows laptop, I'll just take a look for some software. I recall under linux there was just a command line option, I was sort of hoping that OS4 had an equivalent. |

I'll definitely take a look at this, I was thinking that there may be such a solution. Thanks. |
