| Hi
All will this be any good. There is not much info on it yet will it just be another retro machine or is it something more?

Ah, the Ataribox. Well, we still don't know what it will be. It probably won't be an Atari TOS like box, so I don't think the Vampire people have anything to worry about. |

Timed to try and make an impact around the time of release of the new Blade Runner film! I fail to see the value of the brand beyond T-shirts, lunch boxes and hipster products! PC based emulation on a NES classic style mini unit is most probable. _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." Commodore and Atari fought each other and the Mac rather than focussing on beating the PC. Commodore even made PCs!!! What happened to developing the graphics and sound (multimedia) capabilities of the Amiga? Commodore were stuck in a C64 mentality. Produce a cheap box, stack them high sell them cheap and dump the technology and build a new one! They needed to invest in 'platform' building. They were already behind the PC having launched in 1985 rather than 1981 and software support was an issue. The Amiga wasn't compatible with the C64 and the next Hombre project wouldn't have been compatible with the Amiga! Crazy
Atari couldn't sell the Falcon to anyone other than music producers. The machine was good but the software support not there. It was the same with the Jaguar. No one had the business sense of Bill Gates or the marketing prowess of Steve Jobs. Jack Tramiel had one weapon = ruthlessness! He destroyed Commodore's dealer network of computer shop retailers by allowing Toys R Us to stock C64s and C= paid the price with the Amiga having limited dealer support especially in the USA.
... equally as bad no one in America remembers the Atari computers and no one really remembers the Commodore Amiga besides Shadow of the Beast and the Video Toaster! Shocking when the Atari 2600 was so famous as was the C64. A staggering fall from the public consciousness replaced by a near cultural worship of Nintendo and a blinkered approach to corporate investment in the IBM PC despite it being substandard and over priced (at the time)! PC based hardware, but probably not a retro unit. No way to tell what it will be like until the specs are released. The console market is crowded now, so unless its a real price leader, or has some titles that are really spectacular...

As you say it's a crowded market and the XBox One and Playstation 4 are now both PC based as is the Steam Box (what happened to that?). I can't see they have anything unique unless they lean heavily on their arcade game back catalogue. 4K HD remastered Joust, Gauntlet and S.T.U.N. Runner perhaps? _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." John Lasseter, Co-Founder of Pixar Animation Studios |

Gauntlet: Slayer Edition is easily played on a standard Core2Duo PC! So no need for a new console really (sat here with a Atari 2600 T-shirt on ).
... it's also on the PS4

SteamOS is still around and Valve is quietly updating it. They've been helping a lot with the open source Mesa graphics drivers for AMD and it's performance is nearing the Windows driver at a rapid pace. So they've mainly been busy by getting the system up to speed. |

It looks like Warner Brothers still own Gauntlet!! Did they snap up Atari IP during one of the many bankruptcy cases? Either that or they hung on to the games IP when they sold the hardware venture to Jack Tramiel?

I don't know if it's planned but a Blade Runner 2047 game would seem an obvious choice for a launch title if you're trying to go head to head with Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. |

I think Microsoft (signed as a console exclusive) has beaten them to the punch on that front with the definitely Blade Runner inspired The Last Night:
Looks like a mixture of Flash Back, Blade Runner and Another World Last edited by BigD on 19-Jun-2017 at 03:35 PM.

That's the thing. Computers aren't really different to each other any more. They are all Intel (or AMD) derivatives of the IBM PC. Not much difference really between a console and a desktop or laptop. They are following on from Apple by producing a PC with a custom case and firmware. |

It's a good thing that ARM has made phone different otherwise Intel would have a monopoly on everything! _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." John Lasseter, Co-Founder of Pixar Animation Studios |

Wish OS4 would go Arm then maybe we would have more affordable hardware. _________________ A1200 ACA1232 128MB Indivison MkIICr Elbox empty Power Tower RPi3 Emulating C64 ZX Atari PS BBC Wii with Amiga emulation Vampire v4 SA |

If it does make it into the real world, I hope it has an imitation wood-grain panel.
I watched a video of John Carmack giving a talk a while back, and he said the Atari 2600 had something like 16 ms latency. Modern consoles are over 100 ms due to all the software layers and buffering. It would be nice to get back to 16 ms for gaming.
