Although a major marketing coup to relaunch the Nokia brand, Nokia and HMD Global have really dropped the ball with the new 3310.

After spending the last 30 minutes plus on their 'chat service' they gave me no advice and actually refused to suggest anything beyond checking I could get online!!!

Here's the transcript:

Quote:
Chat support in English

Nokia phones support

Hi! How can we help you today with your Nokia phone or accessory?

Today

I seem to be having issue with the new 3310 downscaling MMS picture messages to a wbmp black and white thumbnail image rather than the full size colour jpg it should be! The files can opened when transfered via bluetooth but not over MMS. The same SIM is able to do this on a 2006 Nokia 3220 but not on this handset!

5:27 PM

Hello and thank you for contacting Nokia Mobile Care Team.
This is Lyuben writing.
Could you please provide me with the IMEI number of your phone?

Hi Lyuben
************** (NUMBER REMOVED FOR PRIVACY)

5:29 PM

Are you online?

yes
I've just rebooted the phone after checking the code
I can use WAP internet
Hello?
Anybody there?
Hello? Are you trying to make me hang up so you don't have to answer the query?

5:40 PM

Dear (NAME REMOVED FOR PRIVACY), I need to close this chat, due to inactivity. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Nokia Mobile Care with any questions you may have. We will be happy to support you.

what?
You haven't answered the query!
I will be forced to make this DEFICIENCY public knowledge unless you help me!
Hello?
Nokia used to have good customer satiSfaction ratings and ease of use. Do you now just make gimmick phone for marketing purposes?
Hello?!!
HAS Lyuben GONE FOR HIS DINNER?!
... COME IN NOKIA ... ERM I MEAN HMD GLOBAL DUE YOU GIVE A MONKEYS?
CORRECTION: DO YOU GIVE A MONKEYS?
HELLO?
FUNNY GAME YOU'RE PLAYING...
... CUSTOMER SERVICE ANYONE?
SO ADD THAT TO THE COLLECTION OF DEFFICIENCIES WITH THE HANDSET

1) CAN'T HANDLE MMS MESSAGES!

2) CAN'T IMPORT CALENDAR ENTRIES FROM OTHER PHONES!!!

3) HMD/NOKIA DON'T HANDLE CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORT OR ANSWER EMAILS!

4) THEY MAKE THE NOKIA/MICROSOFT DAYS SEEM LIKE THE GOLDEN ERA!!!

I MISS Lyuben. YES HE WASN'T SERIOUS ABOUT HIS JOB BUT YOU KNOW SPEAKING TO SOMEONE IS BETTER THAN BEING COMPLETELY IGNORED!
IS Lyuben A COMMON NAME?
HELLO
I SEE THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS THE SAME ISSUE!!!!
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mobiledevices/forum/mdasha-mdservices/nokia-3310-new-problem-with-reciving-mms/6b8987f3-b91b-470c-b7b3-930620679e82
WOW!!! LET'S HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO A MILLION HANDSET RECALL!!!!!
I GUESS THE BIGGER PROBLEM IS THAT YOU PROBABLY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM AND INSTEAD OF ADDRESSING IT YOU'RE STICKING YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND!
HELLO
HELLO
HELLO
OK THIS WHOLE CONVERSATION IS GOING PUBLIC NOW.
SO MUCH FOR YOUR MARKETING TRIUMPH
PREPARE FOR THE BACKLASH
YOU WERE WARNED
18:04

I wouldn't recommend ANYONE buys one of these handsets until they address these issues! Trust me to be an early adopter These aren't the Nokia phones of the past and if journalists had actually bothered to do a practical SERIOUS review of phone rather than just laugh at it not being 3G then they may have spotted its short comings!!!

Thank you TechRadar and the national UK newspapers for being a waste of space and joining the ranks of Nokia and their harware partner HMD Global in doing a shoddy job

It's also very telling the only link to the problem online (other than this rant) was posted by mistake on the Microsoft Site!!!

.. and yes I have already had a 15 minute phone conversation with my network provider to check it wasn't a problem there end.

It wasn't.

In fact the same SIM can open MMS messages on my 2006 era Nokia 3220 so this has actually taken us back in time to 2004 era messaging technology albeit with Bluetooth and 32gb SD card support

They claim that they saw all my messages but that the chat system was playing up.

They also claim it's got something to do with the 300kb limit for MMS messages even though it was still a problem with a 164 byte test image sent from my network provider!

The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing and no doubt the software guys didn't properly talk to the hardware people.

I understand your frustration, but be a bit calmer if you can. Tech support isn't the most thankful of jobs.

From what I've seen, their new smartphones are really built like tanks (the Nokia 6 has a rigid steel midframe). But I wouldn't buy the 3310. Even though it has the strong nostalgia factor and battery life, considering the GSM band problems, I think they have better feature phones than this model.

@WolfpackN64

The main problem isn't the feature set but the fact that the features they have are half baked and NONE of the press has investigated this BECAUSE THEY"RE TOO BUSY BLABBING ON ABOUT THE NOSTALGIA FACTOR YOU MENTION!!!

A phone is a phone is a phone and if a tech journalist can't even be bothered to see whether it can ACTUALLY send an MMS message rather than spout off about not having WhatsApp then THEY ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

WE"RE OBSESSED TODAY WITH SPEC SHEETS AND THE BASICS OF USING A PHONE AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REQUIRED WHEN IT MESSES UP IS FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS! So excuse me if I'm frustrated.

@BigD

The "not having WhatsApp" babble was also frustrating me. No one who's going to buy this cares about WhatsApp.

I perfectly understand your frustration, but don't take it out on the tech support ;)
On the other hand, I recently had to contact Apple's tech support for solving a problem with my mother's iCloud (and cloud services are always tricky) and they have some excellent support. I guess you pay extra for a reason.

MMS is an extension not needed for a phone.

I don't know if anyone is still using it, because sending data via TCP/IP is cheaper and more flexible.

I actually don't get your frustration. If anything, you bought a "hype" phone, when there are very good and way cheaper phones (in the same "basic phone" category) that offer the same functionality (nah, better) with the same user experience (nah, better). Are you duped? Probably. To be expected? Certainly. Blaming the reviewers is plain silly. Blaming the tech support the same. Even childish. Like a tauntrum. Like opening multiple threads about it.

Well you know one person don't you BigD, residence: AmigaWorld Gardens, Akiko Place, Lorraine Town. CIA 68k

And since most 'feature' phones don't have the ability to send photos via TCP IP etc then it's quite useful once in a blue moon if someone wants to send me something i.e diagram, photo, Tuxedo suggestion etc

Plus (and this is important);

IT"S ON THE SPEC SHEET AS A BASIC FEATURE OF THE PHONE! IT'S NOT A TICK BOX OR SOMETHING FOR A JOURNO TO RUSH PAST IN A REVIEW 'BUT SOMETHING THAT YOU'D EXPECT TO WORK AS STANDARD SINCE circa 2005!

Yes, I'm blaming a system nah a culture that likes filling column inches with dross about Snake and the thrill of typing numbers on actual keys for the first time since 2007 rather than actually REVIEWING whether the FEATURES of a 'feature phone' actual work!

Sorry if I'm naive but I thought that that was their job!

In regards to the tech support; again I don't expect gremlins on a live chat system when the said company is supposed to rectify other gremlins on the product they sold me!

The tech support are clueless as to what this is all about and haven't even considered upto now that someone with an older Nokia model may want the birthdays and events in the calendar to be transfered or synced from their old handset. It doesn't seem like the MMS system has been tested to recieve jpgs from iPhones or Nokia Windows Phones though no doubt they can send photos to and from other Nokia 3310s ot Nokia 3, 5 or 6 Android phones!

This isn't some hipster rant about 4G or WhatsApp, it is about getting basic functions on what is supposed to be an easy to use 'feature phone' harking back to a simpler time!

I summarise your post to be written in the sentiment of your Avatar character and with the hidden message as follows:

"Ha Ha, you bought a 3310 when I think you should have bought a Nokia 150. Serves you right for wanting an aesthetically pleasing and familiar replacement for your Nokia 3220. I know best and you deserve everything you get because you don't live your life exactly like me! How dare you think that your new 2017 feature phone would even match never mind surpass your 2006 era phone!"

Is that about right?

Interesting to know. I can only comment on the Apple Store geniuses but they always seem to try and guilt you into considering a £2,000+ laptop when all you need is a new power supply or battery!!

In regards to the 'iCloud', I thought all the celebrities getting their accounts hacked and their nude pictures spread over the internet would have stopped people getting involved in such insecure nonsense! Then again most cheaper phones have the data 'solution' of being able to add SD card the Nokia 3310 included!

Yes, ofcourse you do. No introspection, just more whini...no, lets just say externalizing. Let me put it this way: I hope you will enjoy your 3310 and stand behind your phone of choice. And at that stop flooding this forum with your user experience. Or grow up.

@Cheese

Mate let me put it this way;

This is a technical website with a technical forum space for technical discussions like this one. The mainstream media press have jumped on the hype train for this product. That's not why I bought it; my 3220 was in dire need of updating and I thought it was at the point of dying. I threatened to take my problems public and I carried through on that threat. I emailed HMD Global last week and had no acknowledgement, not even direction to the support chat page I used tonight, NOTHING!

It's not JUST the features that they haven't implimented it's that the tech support have no guidance, training or no how to deal with the complaint. There are other people like me who have nowhere to discuss these things other than on a Microsoft forum or on GiffGaff (see link below)!! No official Nokia / HMD Global forums exist. They're quite happy to let the hype blow all this unpleasantness away and that is not right!

A GiggGaff member with the same issue!

Tech journos should grow up and pull the smart phones out of their behinds as they do so. Nokia should pull their trousers up if they ever expect to play anything other than a one hit wonder / come back kid role in the future of mobile phones.

@The Cheesey dude ha ha man

Case in point:

CNET Nokia 3310 'Review'?

Quote:
There's a camera! And a flashlight! You can MMS images!

See how they state in an ironic manner that you can MMS message as if that should be a given! But they blantantly didn't test it did they? They're just reading specs! This lazy tech journalism is everywhere. Most of them it seems just had a go on Snake and then threw it back in a drawer! Shocking.

It is pretty secure (of course every platform has its holes and I wouldn't entrust anything important to the cloud). The Apple Store geniuses in Belgium mostly seem to understand the pain you have to go through when your old Macbook charger died and you need to pay €89 for a new one. It probably depends on the region :)

The UK store near me seemed to suggest it would just be easier to buy a new computer than pay over the odds for one of their chargers

Instead I made them price match with Amazon and they knocked £5 off the still ludicrous price! Don't ask don't get. Most of the other 'hipster' customers looked down their noses at me for haggling

True, you need to try to gain as much advantage as you can. As a Mac user, having pointed them to the European warranty of 2 years instead of 1 as they claim (which is only for businesses). I managed to get a motherboard, hard disk and 2 chargers replaced for free without much hassle. If I bought a new Mac for every fault I had I'd be at least €4000 poorer. I'm not a sucker
