FriendUP v1.0.0 Meta Operating System Released

Hi!

As some of you may already know, I recently joined the very talented team at FriendUP which consists of many former Commodore/Amiga people.

On my first visit to the offices in Norway I was pleased to see they even have a resident Amiga 1000 in the office!

Commodore UK's former joint managing directors David Pleasance and Colin Proudfoot are heavily involved in the company, and talent such as Paul Lassa (behind the Commodore 65) and Francois Lionet of AMOS fame are also coding for the core platform.

I've enjoyed many Amiga related chats with their chief architect Hogne, who is an Amigan through and through. I was impressed to see the AmigaDOS and TRIPOS manuals on his desk for reference.

Amiga fans will be very at home with the CLI which is based on TRIPOS and even the directory structure, mount-lists etc. are all descended from the Amiga. It even has screen dragging!

The project is open source and after 3 years of testing and development, version 1.0.0 was uploaded to Github over the weekend. You can download it and build it locally, check out their web-based "demo version" there will also be a Linux-based Installer coming soon.

I'd implore every Amiga fan to give it a proper look: https://friendup.cloud/friendup-v1-0-0-is-here-the-internet-is-now-your-computer/

We'll have a video giving more detail and showing some examples later this week.

@danwood

Great to see some new ideas - it reminds me on TAO / Amiga Any Where...

@danwood

A video demo would be useful. I need to get my head around how it is 'internet based' and how this differs from a 'normal' OS - sounds interesting though.

FriendUp looks pretty cool.

Familiar faces there:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZglrxRLiF-E

If I got it right...
They need content and they would like Amigans to contribute.
They do humble approach. (but I think it's futile, unless their "OS" behave like ourlovedOS)
I think their "thing" might have better chance than what AmigaDE had.

Which points to the fact that it is a stand alone browser, which I don't get either.
What is the benefit?

@Yssing

Once started & entered in full screen mode user does not need to bother with host OS details.
One would need to master only one OS to able to do things needed.

But yes, a lot to do, to not to end up just as another small niche.

In comparison... I can access my google documents from many devices, but the user experience is annoyingly different on windows and android devices. FriendUP could make the user experience more familiar over all devices.
(I rather use googledocs on 2GB RAM+1,3Ghz+win8 device than on 4GB RAM+1,7Ghz+Android device, because on Android some stuff happen differently)

@KimmoK

I get what they are trying to do, but I just don't think that the general public will embrace it. I can't, for my use, see any point to FriendUP. it's more work to do the same as I have been able to do for years now.
I don't even get the benefit of a real OS, since I would still have to use a real OS to start FriendUP.
But to each their own.

Looks cool.

Cloud computing, IoT, etc. All very cool technologies in a way. A lot of hype and interest, and everyone seems to go all-in. Personally, I just see a lot of potential integrety and security issues...

@KimmoK

I just keep thinking ChromeOS already provides similar functionality, and Microsoft is about to introduce a similar platform.

Does any small organization stand a chance against the monoliths backing these endeavors?

That seems like a lofty goal.

I think that the list of people involved plus the appearances at Amiga events such as AmiWest and Amiga 30th Anniversary speaks more to them offering an alternative direction.

Presumably the exercise is to attract funding and encourage adoption.

@danwood

smart, you got my attention just with the A1000 pic

looks interesting but if I need a 'foreign' OS to boot up a browser to run this OS then I'm not interested. Can I run AutoCAD natively with FriendOS?

@klx300r

Wasnt there in the the last couple years an attempt to make a computer more energy efficint by having a Firefox capability pre full OS boot, by having a minimum Linux BIOS boot instance or something?

So you would boot up Firefox to do simple browsing, then boot the actual Windows OS to do something useful, like Online services and Solitaire?

Well at one time, the goal for some, was to get big enough to be bought by Microsoft, maybe that is still the case..

I can kinda see what they want to do, it feels to me very much what Google Chrome is, that really focus on Web based apps, just taken it one step further and having the whole OS online as well.

But I cant help but feel just having web apps is what people have no gotten use to really, I mean Youtube is basically a video player, Spotify is a music player, Google Docs/Office Online is you work place and there are plenty of Graphics editor and other Apps now that work all online and can connect to you storage account like Dropbox to save your work in, I guess having all much more integrated and more like a traditional desktop system would help, I think older user would maybe feel more at home at using online web apps, but I think the kids of today are kinda of growing up with different apps and platform to play with and lot more use to this new way of working that a lot of us in the Amiga world are perhaps not use to.

Dan Wood has just uploaded a more indepth video of FriendUP, demostrating the features of the OS.

While Im personally somewhat sceptical of cloudbased storage, just from a security point of view, I do see the advantage of this OS from a ease of access point of view, espesially if you are moving around alot for work.

@danwood

I subscribed and tried.
It seems nice but an OS stored locally is faster, especially if you have an SSD

The whole idea is still not bad. I wonder what "killer idea" they can show to catch user attention.
