| I have OS 4.1 Final Editon installed on my uA1c. For some reason I am now experencing a problem that I have never seen before. When I insert a USB flash drive, I am now getting a: System request Unable to open USB Function driver "massstorage.driver" This seems to happen with all of my USB flash drives. However, there is a file called "massstorage.usbfd" (version 53.39) in my directory "sys:kickstart". In a probably unrelated area, I can still print to my printer via USB. Does anyone have any idea as to how to fix this problem.

The "massstorage.usbfd" is only used for "mass storage" devices like USB sticks and external disk drives. The printer uses a different driver (DEVS:usbprinter.device), so that is why it still works.
Check that the massstorage driver is actually loaded by Kickstart. Examine the Kicklayout script in Kickstart/ and check for a line like this:
"MODULE Kickstart/massstorage.usbfd". Make sure it is not commented out with a semicolon.
The file should list as: "massstorage.usbfd 157964 ----rwed 22-Nov-14 23:00:00", with an md5sum:
md5sum CleanFE:Kickstart/massstorage.usbfd 590661be3c4b714a34d5371f048d2d4c CleanFE:Kickstart/massstorage.usbfd
Good luck !

FYI. I have NOT yet installed OS4.1 FinalUpdate1. On my system the file lists the same as what you suggest except for the date and time which are: "08-Oct-14 22:58.31". I also ran the md5sum by typing in: md5sum sys:kickstart/massstorage.usbfd and got the same checksum that you did. My system did NOT recognize "CleanFE:" which is why I used "sys:". Any other thoughts?

Thanks for this suggestion. I'll try to remember it if I ever have this problem again.
However, my problem has just vanished. I was going to look at the usb.log file. So I obviously wanted to reproduce the problem. But when I inserted a flash drive, it is now working just fine as it always has.
On my system I have 3 drives. The first IDE master has all my working partitions. The slave has an enclosure that enables me to insert and remove a tray containing an IDE hard disk which I use as a backup medium. And the second IDE master has my CD/DVD drive. The only thing that I could think of that was different between yesterday and today was the tray containing my backup IDE drive. But when I put the backup drive that I had in the machine yesterday, I am still unable to reproduce the problem. So, I guess I'll just cross my fingers and hope this never happens again.
Thanks, Ned |

I have exactly the same problem. I was going to post about it yesterday but didn't have time. USB drives have never worked for me OS4.1FEU1 and were flaky before that. I have an OS4.1u6 partition and USB drives work fine there.

My partition containing the clean installation of Final Edition is called "CleanFE". I have a similar partition called "CleanFEUpdate1". I don't use either of them, they exist merely as a reference point for questions like yours. Neither of those volume names will apply to your case and your use of the assign "SYS:" is quite correct.
The version of massstorage.usbfd distributed with Update 1 is dated 2016 and much smaller.
I'm glad to hear that you got it going again, though.

The version of massstorage.usbfd distributed with FE Update 1 uses (and depends on) mounter.library. Please check that your Kicklayout includes and loads mounter.library:
>FEUpdate1:Kickstart/
>list massstorage.usbfd mounter.library massstorage.usbfd 55780 ----rwed 27-Nov-16 20:09:30 mounter.library 65320 ----rwed 13-Nov-16 08:22:22
>version full file massstorage.usbfd massstorage.usbfd 53.83 (27/11/2016)
>version full file mounter.library mounter.library 53.19 (13/11/2016)
>search Kicklayout mounter 66 MODULE Kickstart/mounter.library
Hope this helps.
